4) Background

Magnus was born on Sol III, in Greensboro, NC, on the North American continent.  At the age of 12, he was introduced into his first encounter with Starfleet.  His father, being a historical weapons expert and martial arts instructor, had been given a job opportunity teaching Starfleet Security cadets as a civilian contractor in the arts of hand-to-hand combat.  Age 18, he joined Starfleet with the support of his family, and pursued a career in Tactical Operations, where he proved he had the knowledge and skills to become a formidable Security officer, and his handling of Tactical controls and unorthodoxed solutions to Tactical situations led him to a promising career.

5) Starfleet Background

Magnus joined Starfleet at age 18 into the Academy, studying in two majors: Security & Tactical Operations, and Weapons Design.  He was originally assigned to the USS Hephaestus, an advanced escort assigned to patrol the Bajoran Wormhole, as a Tactical Officer, and was able to quickly come to grasp of the ship's capabilities.  Unfortunately, the USS Hephaestus was recalled, and later decomissioned, as the record suggests... though it is more likely the vessel's advanced Tactical capabilities were pulled by Starfleet Intelligence.  Returning to the Academy during his effective layoff, he pursued a degree in Starship Tactical Design, wanting to offer his ideas and suggestions to the Corps of Engineers, but was not given the time to complete his studies before he was contacted to report to the USS Aldrin.

6) Psychological Profile

Magnus is a light-hearted individual with the utmost belief that his capabilities in Starfleet are constantly being challenged, and his abilities to adapt to meet or exceed those challenges is a fascinating exercise for him.  Being said that he is a workaholic would not best describe him accurately, though he does pride himself on his knowledge of weapons and defensive tactics, systems, and methods.  Being the eldest son of a Norwegian-born father and a Swedish mother have their benefits, as Magnus is very much familiar in a boxing ring or street fight situation as much as he is comfortable sitting down and enjoying a glass of vintage, high-shelf spirits.  His loyalty to his crew, especially under stressful environments, has never been called into question, and there have been talks and speculations of awards that should be bestowed upon him for his character.
