-As the child of the Federation's Ambassador to Bajor, Ethan Shaw
regularly lived long periods of his childhood on the Bajoran home planet
away from Earth. This is where Ethan's love of language began as he
grew up being forced to immediately learn two "native" languages,
English and Bajoran. Finding that he enjoyed new languages, Ethan began
to learn new ones as he had the chance, quickly picking up common
languages spoken on Earth and eventually those of other worlds like
Romulan and Vulcan.
-Ethan chose to enlist in Starfleet to continue his families legacy of diplomacy and giving back to worlds around him.
-At the age of 13, Ethan contracted a temporarily debilitating virus
while on Bajor that kept him bed-ridden for weeks. During this time he
lost sight in his eyes and most motor skills. While the doctors where
able to bring Ethan through the ordeal, his vision never returned. His
family quickly made the decision to give Ethan back his sight by
undergoing a retinal surgery. An implant, acting as a type of contact
lens directly fused to the cornea and retinal tissue, now allows Ethan
to see not only as he would have before, but better. His Advanced
Retinal Implants allow him to see from a distance zoomed in, as well as
other visuals such as thermal, night vision, and infrared.
