Background Information

Haven was born in ShiKahr, a major city on Vulcan. Haven's mother, Cecile Laurent, was a talented officer with an impressive history. It was during a science conference that she met Torak. He was a brilliant half Vulcan scientist and the two quickly became acquainted. Torak, though he lived his life the Vulcan way, decided to follow in his own father's footsteps and wanted to mate with Cecile, who was human. He asked her to bond with him and she accepted. Despite their differences in how they displayed their emotions outwardly, they were both very much in love with each other. They were bonded & married and began a life together on Torak's assignment at first. Cecile took a sabbatical from Starfleet to focus on her new life with Torak. It wasn't long after that Cecile became pregnant with their child. Torak wanted his first child to be born on his home planet, as Cecile had no family and no desire to have the baby in France on Earth, where she was born. The two took leave and returned to ShiKahr, Torak's home.

A few years after Haven was born, her parents returned to active duty in Starfleet. First they spent a few years on the USS Arcadia and then were assigned to work at a small outpost on Dorani III. They lived there 'til Haven was about 8 years old. It was then that her life changed completely. The small outpost came under attack by a renegade Cardassian convoy, who was unhappy with ther Federation's presence in the system. The outpost, which only housed about 7 families, was invaded. Everyone was killed, except for Haven, who's mother and father had urged to run away into the hills surrounding the outpost. Haven watched in horror from the hillside as the Cardassian's completely destroyed the outpost. Luckily, the officers of the outpost had deployed a distress signal and the USS Bakura responded to it quickly. Not in time to save the outpost, but to stop the Cardassians from taking over the planet and make sure they were brought to justice. While the away team tried to go through the rubble of the outpost, Haven was discovered as she ran up to them for help. The 8 year old was no orphaned, and with no one from her mother's side alive, she was sent back to Vulcan to be raised by her grandparents.

Being only a quarter Vulcan was difficult for her. Though her grandmother was human, she felt a lot of pressure from her grandfather to be more like her father, Torak. He was well versed in the Vulcan ways, despite being half human. Haven tried her best to be more Vulcan, but had a troubled childhood because of it. When she became older, she told her grandparents she wanted to follow her parents path and join Starfleet. Haven was brilliant, and so she first attended the Vulcan Science Academy for two years, before leaving to enter Starfleet Academy.

Her years at the Academy were lonely and she felt like a misfit, just as she did on Vulcan as well. She looked very human, except for the sharpness of her looks and the slight point of ears. Her blood was light green, like a Vulcan's, but her physiology was mostly human. Haven wasn't sure where she fit in. She dived into her studies and was determined to excel. Halfway during her Academy years she decided to change her focus to Engineering. Despite an affinity to Science because of her upbringing, she wanted more of a challenge in her life. She graduated from the Academy and was assigned to the S.S. Nigala.

Psychological Evaluation:

"Haven Laurent is an excellent cadet. Focused and determined. She has a lot of problems with expressing herself emotionally. She tells me that she tries to be more Vulcan than human and finds that to be difficult. I have told her that she can explore both sides of herself, but the pressure from her upbringing tends to override that. She is lost between two different worlds and she will just have to find her own way. She is capable and strong. She has slight touch-telepathy, as is a Vulcan trait, but she insists that she is doing meditation to keep it under control. She will do fine serving in Starfleet." = Counselor Anya Harris

Physical Evaluation:

"Haven Laurent is of good physical condition. She is thin, but stronger than she appears. Her strength is above average, obviously a trait from her Vulcan biology. She is absolutely fit for duty." = Commander Alex Baylor, MD

Special Abilities:

Haven is a bit stronger than the average "human" female, due to her Vulcan biology. She also has touch-telepath abilities, that can sometimes overwhelm her and so she uses meditation to keep it in check. She has never attempted a mind meld since she was younger, after having a bad experience when trying it. Her grandparents are convinced she is strong enough to handle it, but she is still apprehensive about doing it again.

Appendix:

= Haven placed her father's name "Torak" as an alternate last name in honor of him. She felt she didn't have enough Vulcan in her name to represent that side of her, which is very important.
= Her "nicknames" were more like taunts. Because of her appearance: human, but with sharper features and the pointed ears, she earned those names. "Mutt" came from her being mixed. Due to the constant torment, Haven found herself changing her appearance a lot. Her hair color changes at a moment's notice.
