Stardate 9612.07:
Computer Begin Log::While assisting refugees of floods in the village of
Ranai'jo our team leader went off and beamed up to the ship. I find this
behavior heartless and inhuman. No matter what was going on, on the ship,
the wounded should have been the first concern of all the team. The sheilds
could have been fixed when all the wounded were stable. Add to this the fact
the Damara ignored my message and managed to get beamed onto a ship whose
shields were stuck up; well I find her excuses very
shabby. Thank god there was only one life lost. At least up to this point.
If this is the way Superior officers are allowed to act, then I will not
accept a promotion. I feel that Damara should face a court martial!

Ensign Tony Fetterman
Duty Log
Star Date 9612.07

I was designated to join the Alpha away team in evacuating an endangered
Bajoran village located below the destroyed dam. I outfitted myself with two
personal weapons (my katana and daisho), two hundred feet of nylon rope and
my issue phaser.
Alpha team teleported down east of the village. LCdr Damara instructed
Lieutenant KNu Chi and myself to escort several refugees to the unestablished
base camp area. We did so and I requested blankets and dry clothing from
Acting Captain Gill. Lt. KNu Chi suggested portable shelters and I added
that to the request for supplies.
Lieutenant KNu Chi and myself quickly set up the shelters and hurried to
assist the on-going rescue operation. LCdr Damara instructed Lt. KNu Chi and
I to move an injured man to the now established base camp area. I told Lt.
KNu Chi to grab a blanket and follow me. We then ran to the wounded
Bajoran's location. Lt. Knu Chi and myself then used the blanket as a
make-shift stretcher and carried the man to Dr. KXyl.
Lt. KNu Chi and myself then ran back to the flood site and began
searching buildings. Lt. KNu Chi spotted a H'er lurking nearby, however it
didn't make any aggressive moves.
I broke out the window of the first building as the door was jammed from
the pressure of the water. As I entered the building and began searching the
H'er began making aggressive moves towards the lieutenant. Lt. KNu Chi
commed for help and I waded back out and stunned the H'er with my phaser.
As I reentered the building, I heard faint cry's for help coming from
the food preparation area. I moved into the room and spotted a Bajoran
female barely keeping her head above the rising water. The refugee was
trapped under a large piece of fallen ceiling. I commed Lt. KNu Chi for
assistance. The lieutenant pulled the woman out, when I lifted the chunk of
ceiling off her.
The water level was still rising rapidly, so I instructed Lt. KNu Chi to
take the injured woman to the base camp while I checked the last building.
I again broke out a window of the last building and swam inside. As I
checked the building, I heard crying coming from the second story. I swam to
the landing and ascended the stairs. As I moved through the upper level, I
discovered a young Bajoran child holding a stuffed animal (Lt. KNu Chi had
delivered the wounded woman to Dr. KXyl and was headed back to my position).
I calmed the child and Lt. KNu Chi arrived a very short time later. Lt.
KNu Chi and I towed the child between us to safety.
During the rescue attempt a portion of Alpha team was required to split
off to assist Captain Klindt's away team. Captain Klindt's team was under
fire and trapped. Their rescue attempt of the Captain and his team was
successful. The remainder of Alpha team then beamed up with the remainder of
the refugees.

Lt. KNu Chi was invaluable to me today. I hope I wasn't too bossy, an
emergency hits and I forget i'm only an ensign now.
Captain Klindt and his away team got into serious hot water again from
what I heard. This is happening far too often. I tried to lodge a protest
with him before the mission began and he didn't even acknowledge me!
He takes off without a security detachment every time. It makes me
wonder what the hell i'm doing on this ship. At least he didn't take

we lost our Captain AND our First Officer?
I swear, if this happens again, i'm going to talk to Lt. Algar, the

DR. ROBERT MASON, LTJG, ASSISTANT MEDICAL OFFICER, USS ODYSSEY, NCC-613556
DUTY LOG, FILE NO. 08923769: FIELD REPORT

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My first mission onboard the Odyssey was anything but slow. Beaming
down to the villiage of Ranai'Jo on Bajor, my team was faced with countless
dilemmas. My main priority was the evacuating the villiage and tending to
the wounded with the Chief Medical Officer. Upon arrival, the medical team's
first problem was the rapidly rising flood waters from the Ranai River.
Quick and Efficient work was required. Tending to the first of the wounded,
I performed an emergency trachyotomy with a field kit, and was successful,
removing the blockage and sealing the patient. 10 cc's of Demerol were given
as a general anesthetic.
The next victims had multiple lacerations, fractures, and major
epidermal damage, as well as internal problems such as cardiac infarctions
and lung collapses. An emergency Aortonomy was performed to alleviate the
pressure on one victim's heart casused by a broken rib. This emergency
surgery was also successful.
As soon as all the wounded were marked with red and grey Starfleet shock
blankets, tending to injured people was more efficient due to increased
recognition. A large non-motorized produce cart was spotted, and I suggested
the evacuation of the injured via the wagon. Moving the injured upward with
a group of junior officers, I managed to stabilize the wounded. The cart
moved to higher ground as the flood waters enveloped most of the villiage.
Near higher ground to the west, the Chief Medical Officer was stabilizing a
group of Bajorans. Working together, we managed to get all of the injured
onto the cart and move toward the Evacuation Shelter.
As it stands, I am writing this report from within the Evac. Shelter on
a PADD. Many of the wounded are in dire condition, and are in need of true
medical attention and the facilities on the Odyssey. I sincerely hope the
Odyssey can beam us up before there are any more causualties of this terrible
disaster.

Today the Odyssey was part of an emergency response team that was sent to
Bajor. A small village had been flooded when a dam was blown up by some
terrorists. They needed help assisting with the evacuation of the village
and providing medical aid to the wounded.

My team consisted of LCdr Tamara, myself, LtAlgar, EnsFtrman, LtjgKnuchi,
LtSteph and FstLtKxyl. When we first arrived, I asked everyone to pair up.
Ftrman and Knuchi were assigned to assist the evacuees to the temporary
shelters we were setting up. I sent Algar and Steph to the village to search
for any stragglers or anyone who might be trapped. Dr. Kxyl began setting up
a triage operation and Tamara began helping her with identifying the worst
cases so they would get the appropriate assistance
first. Our new doctor, Dr. Mason, joined her and provided much needed help.

Meanwhile, I set up some portable replicators near the shelter and began
handing out hot soup to the survivors. FstLtTracy joined me later and she
was a great help. At first everything was running very smoothly. We have an
excellent crew and everyone knew exactly what their job was and did it well.

Suddenly I received a call from Lt. Gill, who was in charge of the Odyssey at
that time. He told me the Odyssey was under attack. I told him to contact
the Captain, but he later hailed me and said he was unable to reach either
the Captain or the Commander. Since I knew that they were negotiating with
the terrorists, this worried me. On top of that, Knuchi hailed me saying
that she had some people trapped in the town. I notified LtCdr Tamara that I
would be beaming up to the ship so I could
coordinate things from there. I asked Gill to beam me up, but he told me he
couldn't lower the shields since they were currently under attack.

Next, I asked Gill to have Knuchi's group beamed out from the area they were
trapped. But he needed a few moments to deal with the Bajoran vessel. I
informed Knuchi and she apparently was able to get out on her own.

I was assigned to the Alpha team, with (Lt) Commander Damara as its
leader. Our job was to rescue the people from the flood. With all the
injured, (Fst) Lieutenant Kate and the new doctor, Mason, were incredibly
busy, and (Lt) Commander Tamara was helping out. I was helping by passing out
food to the uninjured. I was tempted to help out with the injured, but I

LIEUTENANT GILL • •
Acting Commanding Officer- USS Odyssey

A Bajoran terrorist organization named Freedom set off a bomb at the Ranai
Dam on Bajor. The Odyssey was ordered (through quite a number of relays I
might add) to assist the locals and talk with the terrorists. I was given
command of the USS Odyssey NCC-615336 while the Captain and XO went to meet
with the terrorists. I assisted the Alpha Team (their job was to help the
locals) whenever they needed supplies from the ship. I transported down some
blankets and other supplies with the assistance of LtJg
Tom. It looked like a rather dull day until a Bajoran ship came off the
surface on an intercept course with us. Their weapons were armed. I raised
shields and tried to hail them, but got no response. They fired on us and I
had no choice but to let Tom open fire. The ship was eventually disabled and
it was towed into the shuttle bay. The crew started beaming back to the ship
soon afterward.

Situation: It seems that a terorist faction on Bajor has taken to violence.
They blew up a couple of dams and now towns are being flooded out. The people
needed our help.

Our Mission: To evacuate as many civillians as possiblefrom a town about to
be hit by a major flood.

Our team beamed down to Bajor on a hill overlooking a small town. I suggested
that Lt Algar and I split to a seperategroup to find people who weren’t able
to evacuate themselves. After walking a little ways, Algar and I came upon a
building which appeared to be bombed out. I pulled out my multicorder and it
detected a faint life sign. “All right, let’s start a diggin” Algar morphed
into a giant mole and started digging from theunderneath. I went to the top
and blasted the rocks into protons. I stopped
when it was no longer safe for the rescuee, and Algar did the rest. Next, we
started walking towards a cave where I had detected several life forms.
Inside, we heard Captain Klindt and the other person who was supposed to
negotiate with him (I can’t remember specifics) being taken away in a
not-so-kind manner. The cave was vey complex and Al and I were stumpeduntil
we came up with the idea of following the infrared tracks left by the people!
We followed and arrived at a room where they were being held
hostages. We hid behind a rock, and when the time was righ I flew and Algar
ran both of us blasting the baddies into kibbles. We quickly ran outside,
blasting a few more terrorists until we saw the daylight. We were then beamed
p to the Oyssey safe and sound.

Algar Duty Log:
We were assigned the formidable task of helping out Bajorians who
were
attacked by Bajorian terrorists. The team I was assigned to was beam to help
out
with causalities. Lt. Steph asked if we could be paired and if we can go
apart from
the main team. LCdrDamara agreed and we went out looking for injured.
Steph's
tricoder pick up a weak lifeform reading emanating from the rubble of a
house. Steph
pulled out his phaser and tried to cut his way through. I assumed the form
of a giant
mole and dug the an injured girl. I then can form and became a stretcher for
her.
Steph using his "jet-pack" wheeled us to the main camp where we left her to
be taken
care of. The Steph seemingly working on an hunch grab me and started follow
a
fainter signal that was getting stronger. We found ourselves inside a cave
staring at
the Captain and the Commander trying to negotiate with the Terrorists. The
negotiations turned bad for the Captain and they hustled both of them out of
the cave.
The looked like they were prisoners, and I assumed as much. Steph, using his
pack
and stock pile of weapons flew in and fired on the Terrorists. I starting
firing my
phaser and try to make to the Captain and the Commander before the Terrorists
over
came their collective shock and started firing back. Upon reaching them, the
Captain
was on top of Commander Mason. I guessed he was shielding her from the
phaser
fire. Once Steph and I managed to subdue the remaining Terrorists, Captain
Klindt
then beamed us back on to the Odyssey. The Odyssey was dealing with some
Bajorian ships. As far as I can tell Lt Gill was handling the situation
well. I kept in
constant communication with the team still on the planet, ready at any second
to
beam up the crew and the wounded. Gratefully that never came to be. The
Odyssey
scared away the Bajorian ships with little damage done to the ship. The Crew
treated
the wounded. By then reinforcements came and the crew beamed back to the ship
tired and really wet.

Duty Log

::log opens::

The Captain and I were sent to negotiate with the leaders of the rebel
faction causing the disruptions on Bajor while the rest of our crew was
divided into teams to aid those Bajorans affected by the flooding when the
dam blew. We made our way to the system of caverns where the rebels were
based and entered them without being challenged, a circumstance I found
rather odd. Apparently, they relied on some sort of perimeter alarm to advise
them of "visitors", rather than the standard sentries...
Shortly after we entered the outermost cave, we were confronted by 3 of
the rebels: two females and a male. One of the females seemed to be in
charge. She was belligerent and took us into what she termed custody instead
of escorting us to any sort of negotiations. In vain, we tried to reason with
the woman...it is well known that our government never bargains for
hostages...but she seemed to have some crazy idea of selling us to the
highest bidder among the enemies of the Federation.
I doubt that would have come to much, but, fortunately, we were not
given the opportunity to find out firsthand. We were rescued by a party of
our crewmates who arrived on the scene most opportunely... I hope this will
be the last 'action' we see for awhile. I'd prefer that the captain and I
spend a bit more time on the ship than in the trenches... After all, we have
plenty of gung-ho security sorts who'd give their eye teeth for just such a
mission.

While Captain Klindt and Commander Mason were on Earth at a Starfleet
conference, I was in charge of the bridge. The Odyssey had received orders
to stop and search a couple of cargo ships that were suspected of smuggling
contraband material. We had warrants to board and search each ship.

We located the O.T.S. R'ae first and hailed her. I announced our intentions
to board and search the ship and ordered them to shut down their engines.
They cooperated immediately and offered no resistance. Sarvok beamed over to
the R'ae with an away team in order to conduct the search. The away team
consisted of Algar, Gill, Knuchi, TomTrek, Fetterman, and Dr. Mason.

They hadn't been on the ship for very long when Sarvok notified me that they
had discovered some illegal weapons on board the ship. I immediately
notified the R'ae that their vessel was being confiscated by Starfleet and to
prepared to be towed.

The smugglers then raised their shields. The Captain's shuttle was returning
from Earth, so I waited until it was safely back on board the Odyssey. I
then ordered the Odyssey's shields to be raised as well. The R'ae then began
to power up their engines, so I fired a warning shot across their bow. That
is when the Commander arrived at the bridge and I returned to my science
station.

I realize now that I should have waited until the Away Team was back on board
the Odyssey before I said anything to the smugglers about confiscating their
ship. If anything happens to that team, it will be my fault.

R'ae and one other ship, which name I do not recall at this time. The R'ae
was the first to come into range. We hailed it, asking it to lower its

THE PLAN

A Joint Log by Damara, Gill, and Knuchi

This takes before the mission to search the smuggler’s ship. Gill and
Damara are in 6 Forward having a cup of coffee and discussing Damara’s power
problems.

Damara looked at Gill. “Knuchi and I were discussing this the other night.”

Gill looked seriously at her. “I can only find one problem with the idea.”

“What problem?”

“A fusion generator would normally be too much for your system. We need a way
to decrease power so that it can interface.”

Damara frowned. “I see. Does it have to be fusion? I was thinking of solar
cells.”

“You could use solar, but there would be obvious draw backs. Solar has never
been very reliable.”

KNuChi walked up to their table. “Sorry I am late.”

Damara smileed at her. “Hello, Knuchi.”

Gill looked up. “No problem. Hi!”

KNuChi sat down. “Have you had a chance to talk?”

Gill nodded. “A little.”

KNuChi nodded. “Fill me in.”

Damara looked at her. “We were discussing the problem with a fusion
generator and the possiblity of solar power. Go ahead, Gill.”

“Well we need a way to decrease the power output of the generator so that her
system can take it and solar would only work if she was in a well lit area.
I have an idea on how to decrease the power output of the generator. I have
my staff working on it.”

Damara tilted her head. “But solar cells store energy, don't they?”

“Yes, but only for so long...”

KNuChi nodded. “Solar works as long as there is some sort of light. On Earth
I lived in a area that had both sun and fog or clouds. The batteries still
were able to absorb the heat. As long as there is light there is power.”

Gill frowned. “Yes, but I would rather be safe than sorry if at all
possible. It is your decision either way, Commander.”

Damara thought for a moment. “So does a fusion generator use nuclear power?”

“Yes, a clean and stable form of nuclear power. It is what I run on.”

“No radioactive waste?”

“None at all. Fission produces waste, not fusion.”

Damara smiled. “Okay, then if you can solve the power problem, that would be
good. Otherwise, solar would work fine.”

KNuChi frowned. “Except in caves. Can we do both...back up of a back up?”

Damara nodded. “Or like Knuchi said, maybe fusion can back-up the solar?”

Gill smiled. “That is a good idea, too. It always pays to have a back-up.
Also, you should know that the fusion generator would entail some surgery
from Kate.”

“I was thinking of having a couple of solar cells put on my arm or leg. What
kind of surgery?”

“Since many of your implants are internal, we can install the generator
inside your body.”

KNuChi looks at Gill. “Could the solar storage cells also be used to
control the energy from the fusion generators?”

Damara brightened. “Good idea, Knuchi. Would that work, Gill?”

Gill smiled broadly. “Yes, that would work nicely.”

Damara sat back. “Excellent. Then that sounds like a plan.”

KNuChi nodded. “Okay, Gill now we have the plan how do we do it.”

Gill thought for a moment. “Well, I should have the generator ready in a
couple days. The solar panels will be a simple matter, and Kate can install
the generator when its ready. We'll need to ask her about it. Then I'll need
to wire up the generator and solar panels to regulate power flow.”

Damara finished her coffee. “Yes, Gill. Why don't you explain it to Kate
and give her the specs for the generator?”

“Yes, sir.”

“It sounds like Kate needs to be there to perform the surgery and you need to
be there to wire up the generator. Knuchi, would you like to assist?”

KNuChi frowned. “Doing what? You have the two head officers you need. I just
want to make sure you are aware of everything that is going on in YOUR body.
Damara, what do you think of all of this?”

Damara looks at Gill. “Are there any disadvantages to what you're
proposing?”

Gill shook his head. “All I can think of is advantages.”

Damara nodded. “Well, then I'm satisfied.”

Gill smiled. “Great -- we can do it then. I will get with Kate tomorrow.”

Damara stood up as well. “OK, good, Gill.”

Gill stood up. “Well, good night all!”

Damara waved. “Good night.”

KNuChi stood up. “Good night.”

Damara turned to Knuchi. “I’d really like you to be there. After all, this
was your idea.”

KNuChi looked at her. “If you want me to be there, Damara, I will be glad
to.”

Damara smiled. “Good -- thanks!”

Knuchi and Damara walked out together.

LIEUTENANT ISAAC GILL • •
Chief Engineer- USS Odyssey

Begin Log
This mission started out as just a simple search-the-freighters mission. We
flew around looking for a freighter for what seemed like a very long time.
When we finally found one, Commander Damara ordered it to stop and let us
search it (The Odyssey had a warrant of course). A party that consisted of
Sarvok, Dr. Mason, Tom, and I (I'm sorry if you were there too and I just
can't remember) boarded the vessel. We searched the cargo for a while and
Dr. Mason finally found some illegal weapons hidden in
the cargo bay. Sarvok notified Damara of the find and she ordered the
vessel to surrender itself. Of course the freighters' occupants didn't like
that idea so they raised their shields and took off with the away team
(including me) still aboard. So much for this day.

I am recording this on a portable log book due to the fact that I am in a
room on a freighter which is full of weapons...

Lt. Algar and I were searching this vessel, along with the rest of the
security team when we came upon this out of the way little room. Algar morped
intoa liquid and was able to get inside and open the door. Shortly after we
entered I heard footsteps and we had unexpected company...

We are currently involve in a fire fight with the security crew from this
ship and we are pinned down. We are awaiting help from the other away team
members but I am not sure how long they are giong to be....

Algar has once again saved my B.... and we have become a pretty good
team.

Duty Log SD 9612.14

In this mission, my third aboard ship, we were diverted from deep space
to Sector 001- the Sol system. I had just returned to the ship after a trip
to Trill to procure a priest for my ceremony, having been detained due to
border tensions. I had wanted to start the ceremony immediately but our
mission prevented this. I was immediately suspicious: why would a ship like
the Odyssey be diverted all the way to Sol just to investigate some vessels
suspected of smuggling. Orion Cartel or not, the
Terrans have ample ships to police their system. This mission was already
beginning to remind me of our little excursion to rescue those "Bajorans."
When we arrived at Sol I had little to do while we awaited the
rendezvous with the R'ae. Tracy let me take Ops in order to analyze my
performance. I decided that now that I had a real Ops station to work with,
I would scan the "Bajoran" quarters. I detected a major concentration of
chronoton particles. Reporting this, I continued scanning for non-Bajoran
neural activity and also detected chronoton fluctuations in the science lab.
My first impulse was to flood their quarters with tachyons, but I
figured my superiors would frown on that. I also noticed some anomalous
patterns in our shield's generation structure but did not have a chance to
report them. At that point we rendezvoused with the R'ae and the inspection
team beamed over.
I had begun to feel disoriented an while scanning the R'ae I somehow
activated a red alert. I began to hear the whispering voices and quickly
became disjoined from my body. While in the brightness I could hear the
voices clearly. I heard an ensign shouting about something exploding in the
science lab and the disabling of our shield generator. I began to see hazy
pictures -- I only remember one, the one that mattered.
I saw an Orion phased plasma bomb beamed THROUGH the shields into the lab.
Before the visions ended I sensed Steph near me.... and he felt much like the
"Bajoran" presence. Soon I was floating through the ship and returned to my
body in sick bay. I could barely speak coherently and the doctor didn't
understand me. I barely remember how I stumbled to the bridge, but somehow I
called for the science lab to be evacuated and reported the situation. I
took a sensor panel on the bridge and began to scan
the R'ae and the Odyssey. My memory began to piece together the visions and
I formed a theory on how the bomb could be beamed through the shields.
Aparrently the smugglers were carrying a sophisticated Orion transporter
arrat which could penetrate shields. I reported this to Tac, which disabled
the transporters. I somehow knew that the device was not located in the R'ae
transporter section, however, that it was near the warp core, but I couldn't
explain this. I detected that the device was being
activated. My last thought was to flood our shields with beryl neutrons. I
didn;t know why, I just blurted out to Tracy to do it. Naturally, she
ignored me, as I was babbling. I routed control of Ops to my panel and
proceeded to flood the shields. Somehow this disrupted the Orion device and
the the plasma detonation was dispersed throughout the R'ae's shields.
Apparently the R'ae was either disabled or destroyed just after our team
beamed back. I went unconscious as soon as the bomb fiasco was
over.

::Damara sat at her desk in her office. She leaned back in her chair and

Computer, open my duty log.

Computer> Duty log open.

The Odyssey was sent to the Ye cluster, within the Sol system in order to
provide backup to the USS Liara. This vessel is specially equipped to scan
cloaked vessels. Several cloaked vessels of unknown origin had been
discovered within the cluster. Once we arrived, we rendevouzed with the
Liara and they proceeded to scan. I also ran various scans on a wide band to
see if I could detect any tachyon particles from the cloaked ships but my
scans were unsuccessful.

I received a message from LCdr Tamara, who had gone to the Cargo Bay to
investigate reports of an intruder. She asked me to come down there and
assist her, which I did. When I arrived, I discovered that she, Knuchi and
Algar had managed to capture some kind of an energy creature within a
containment field.

Tamara indicated that the creature had not moved and she thought it was
perhaps unconscious. I tried to scan the creature but all I could tell was
that it was emitting energy on a low energy band. I thought if I could get
it moved to the science labs, I would be able to perform more extensive tests
and find out exactly what this lifeform was.

I asked for a transport, but we discovered that because of the unique nature
of the creature, it could not be transported. We had just about decided to
use an anti-grav unit to move it, when Knuchi took things into her own hands,
literally. She approached the creature and picked it up. It seemed to trust
her and did not harm her in any way, so we quickly moved to the science labs.

I tried again to perform a full spectrum analysis, but those results were
still inconclusive. I did determine, however, that the creature was growing
and theorized that it was a young one of its species. Knuchi somehow was
able to communicate with the creature and discovered that it wanted to go
home -- wherever that was.

She suggested that we lower the containment field and let the creature go.
It would then be able to leave the ship the same way that it had managed to
enter it. I must admit I was very nervous about letting something go which
could potentially be dangerous to the ship, but I finally agreed and lowered
the containment field.

The creature immediately changed into a gaseous form and left the Odyssey
without doing any damage or causing anyone harm. Apparently, it did simply
want to leave. I must say I was very relieved. Right after that, I returned
to the bridge.

Computer, close my duty log.

Operations

We were orderd to cover the U.S.S. Liara. We went into a *distortion*
and an unknown vessel uncloaked. It opend fire on the Liara, and we fired
back. The Liara soon lost most of their shields. We ended up shielding the
Liara. Soon after, the unknown vessel's shields were taken down considerably,
to almost failing, and another ship uncloaked, of the same origin as the
first unknown. As I now had Ops, Helm, and Tac (Tac for about 5 seconds) I
was orderd to concentrate fire on the seond unknown
vessel, while still firing phaser at the first, and to signal the Liara, and
to move in front of the Liara. We shortly got the shields on both ships down.

Algar Duty Log

::Algar gets up from the floor looking around bewildered:: What
happened?
One minute we are involved with some gun runners and next we're in the
transporter
room. What is going on here? ::Klindt smiles at Algar's outburst:: Relax,
Algar. We
managed to beam out the away team. Ensign Fetterman managed to shut down the
core long enough for everybody to beam back onto the Odyssey. ::Algar looks
around
and sees K'NuChi, Sarvok, Tom, Dr. Mason and Fetterman getting up on shaky
legs::
You did a great job everybody, everyone report to sickbay so KXyll can runs
some
tests and see if everybody is ok. And once again great job! ::Klindt's smile
grows
wider as he heads for the door:: Uh, sir what happened to the ship?
::Fetterman
says:: The ship self-destructed when we tried to tow her. Looks like the
gun runners
didn't want to get caught. Death before dishonor. ::Sarvok says supporting
Tom:: A
sentiment I can agree with even though they were criminals. ::K'NuChi says::
I expect
a full report from each of you concerning the mission. After that is when
everyone
here is cleared by the doctor to return to duty. ::Klindt walks out the door
and rounds
the corner smiling, and whistling a happy tune:: Is just me or did the
Captain just
walked out of here with an unusual spring in his step? ::Dr. Mason asks,
bewildered::
I noticed it too. ::Fetterman says, stepping down from the platform wincing
slightly::
The Captain is in a very good mood I wonder what happened on Earth? ::Sarvok
says, as he and Dr. Mason help Tom through the door and to Sickbay::
Whatever it is
I hope it carries over to the next mission it mean a promotion. ::K'NuChi
says smiling
at Algar as she too leaves the transporter room:: See you later Algar.
::Fetterman is
about to walk out when Algar stops him:: Fetterman, wait. ::Fetterman turns
around
and looks at Algar:: Yes sir? ::Algar places his hands behind his back::
You've done
excellently in the past few missions, I wouldn't be surprised if the Captain
put you in
for a promotion and a medal for your service. ::Fetterman smiles:: Thank You
sir. I
was beginning to think that I wasn't going to get promoted. ::Algar nods::
Don't worry,
the way the Captain is feeling I think a promotion is the very near future.
You better
get to sickbay. ::Fetterman turns away smiling:: Oh, Fetterman don't forget
I want
your report on my desk tomorrow. ::Fetterman groans as he heads off for the
sickbay::
Well, time to go. ::Algar says smiling::

Log Open

::Algar walks into his quarters after spending some time in
sickbay. Tom
would be ok and Fetterman's aches and pains were treated:: You should have a
bed
reserved for you Algar. ::Dr KXyll says jokingly:: As many times I see you
here you
nearly beat out Sarvy for most banged up crew member. ::Algar smiles as he
sits
down in front of his computer:: Begin recording log.

We were assigned to return to the sol system, to investigate mysterious
shipping practices and for the Captain and Commander to speak at a meeting on
Earth itself. Sarvok, the team leader sent beamed with us to a cargo ship
not very far
from the Moon. We broke into pair and began to methodically search the
interior for
anything out of the ordinary. K'NuChi, my partner at the time, suggested I
take a form
of a dog to ferret out anything unusual. We came to a door and I managed to
open it.
Inside of it we found what we were looking for. Parts for a variety of
weapons all of it
illegal. Then we were attacked by the runners, I dove for cover with
K'NuChi. We
were trapped and the ship was moving. I tried to communicate with the
Odyssey but
it looked like they raised shields and were making a break for it. We were
pinned
down but I spotted Fetterman moving stealthily on top of some crates.
K'NuChi and I
gave him cover by distracting the runners as he managed to turn of the
generators.

Sarvok took charge and got us to our original beam in point and we beamed
back on
board the Odyssey. I must have taken a hit because for the life of me I
can't
remember when Fetterman turn off the power or us beaming on board. It was a
harrowing mission, I for one was glad. We all got off lucky.

Algar Personal Log

::Algar still sitting on his chair looks out the open viewport at the
Earth as the
Odyssey orbits:: Today we had our first mission as a security force with
both K'Nuchi
and Fetterman. The Captain was away with the Commander on Earth at a meeting
while the Odyssey was paroling for rumored weapon smugglers. The Odyssey
found
them and Sarvok as the team leader beam used into the ship. The team
consisted of
Sarvok, Lt (jg) Tom, Dr. Mason, Lt (jg) K'NuChi, Ensign Fetterman and myself.
We
broke off into pairs and began to search the ship. I assumed that the ship's
crew was
elsewhere as we checked the ship from top to bottom. K'NuChi suggested me to
change forms to speed up the search. I found that a dog would work and began
"sniffing." I found a door that lead to the parts. We were then attacked by
the ship's
crew. They thought they could stop us from relaying what we found to
Starfleet. I
dove for cover and K'NuChi already shielded began to fire. We were pinned
down but
the same could be said of the smugglers. Sarvok, Tom, and Dr. Mason was
firing on
their position as the smugglers were firing on us. Then we discovered that
they were
trying to make run for it. The rest was a blur as Fetterman moving like a
spider
managed to come from on top of them and took out the ship's power. I must've
sustained a shot in the head because I cannot remember the actual events very
clearly. Sarvok got us back to our original beam in point just as the
shields were
coming back online, and beamed us home. I was disoriented but finding the
team
alive and well was enough for me. I was glad that my security team held
together in
such a crisis and we all managed to get home. I have already put in for a
promotion
for Ensign Fetterman and a medal for both him and Lt (jg) K'NuChi for
meritorious
service. ::Algar finishes his log and gets up and walks to the window. He
looks at the
blue ball of the Earth and smiles at his few fond memories of his days at the
academy. Then a voice comes from behind him as he spins around to see who it
is.
All Algar sees is a bright flash and then nothing::

me?
I'd better write my log and a little later I'll read whatever it someone sent

thinks as he press his PADD::
The Odyssey was sent to a cluster in the Sol system to meet up with USS
Liara. It was said that the ship would become very important to Federation's
defensive capabilities with it's ability to scan and locate cloaked ship.
That made it a
potential target for unfriendly. We arrived at the proscribed time and very
quickly the
ship was attacked by unknowns. Odyssey maneuvered herself into the line of
fire and
Sarvok in his fighter launched out of the Odyssey to help defend the helpless
Liara.
While this was happening, I was alerted to a potential intruder alert by Lt
(jg) K'NuChi.
She found anomalous reading in one of the cargo bays. We both alerted the
captain
to the situation and proceeded to check it out. On the way there we met up
with
Tamara, Torzel, and Damara. I entered with my tricorder in one hand and my
phaser
ready in the other. I waved K'NuChi to flank whatever it was to the left
while I moved
to my right. I was hoping whatever it was we could contain it with little
fuss. I
discovered some sort of energy creature. I was taken aback by it, Tamara
said it
wasn't getting anything in terms of emotions or thoughts. But, K'NuChi
seemed to
commune with it. Damara tried to get some readings but it didn't register on
anything.
Torzel left soon afterwards, as if he has seen the Prophets themselves. Me,
I wasn't
sure what it was. K'NuChi actually picked the alien up and carried to the
science
room. There K'NuChi, seemed to pick up that the alien wanted to "go home."
Damara theorized that the energy being was in fact a child and it was lost.
K'NuChi
somehow convinced the scared child to leave the ship and return to wherever
home
was. I felt a moment of vertigo, and then it felt like I blacked out. But
within moments
I was back. No one seemed to noticed. At the end of the mission I was
promoted to
Chief of Security for the ship. A job which I will take seriously.

LIEUTENANT ISAAC GILL • •
Chief Engineer- USS Odyssey, NCC-615336

::Begin Log::
A number of cloaked vessels were suspected to be hiding near the Sol sector.
The Odyssey was sent to aid the USS Liara in its investigation. Very soon
after we arrived the unknown vessels decloaked and ambushed the USS Liara.
The Liara was serverely disabled. The Odyssey manuvered to protect the Liara
and Sarvok took his fighter to defend the crippled Liara. An intruder was
found in onboard. I was ordered to enclose it with a force field and I did,
but the lifeform was emitting some kind of energy
pulse that disrupted the field. I kept changing the frequency of the field,
but the lifeform eventually disabled the field. I went to see if I could
help capture the intruder. When I arrived, I found Lieutenant K'NuChi
touching the creature. I was amazed, at first, that after what we had done
to the creature, it let K'NuChi near it. The Lieutenant took the lifeform
the the science lab and comforted it. The ship suffered moderate damage in
this mission. The engineering crew should only spend one
sleepless night making repairs.

:::computer start recording:::

The Odyssey was preparing to meet the Liara. Security, under Lt. ALgar, had
been
notified and I was working with Algar. The two of us were doing routine scans
of the
ship, when I thought I had spotted something in one of the cargo bays. Algar,
rescanned
the bay and found that we had been "boarded" ( for no better way of putting
it). LCdr
Tamara ordered us to investigate. Algar put together a team and along with
Tamara and
Ltjg Torzel , we headed for the cargo bay.
Upon reaching it we entered the room and spread out, searching for any sign
of the
source of the readings. I was constantly watching Algar, who has taught me
much since I
have been working with him. He was the one who finally found the "creature"
who had
entered the Odyssey and was in the cargo bay.
We approached it with caution, putting a retaining field around it.Upon the
first
exams, we were not sure if it was alive or dead, but I did notice the Torzel
was having a
real problem with this life force....It was effecting him as far as he
ability to concentrate....
Tamara decided to ask LCdr Damara to take over in the cargo area as she is
the
Head of the Science Dept. Upon her arrival, we noticed that the "creature"
was giving off
some kind of energy and it was decider to transport it to Science Lab 3...(
Torzel thought
he had made a connection between the being and the Bajorians so he headed off
the their
quarters)...without success...seems the creature was having strange effects
on the
transporter and Isaac Gill informed us that it would not be safe to attempt a
transport as
he was not sure he would be able to control where it was transported to....He
headed
down to the cargo bay.
Just about the time Gill was arriving, Algar was going to try to touch it . I
yell for
him to stop as I was afraid the "creature" would meld with him and put him in
danger.
Then something happened....for some reason, instincts ,I do not understand, I
started to
talk to it , softly, moving closer to it and finally I picked it up. It was
scared and I knew it.
Algar, wanted to change into a container to put it in, but I decided to carry
it to Lab 3....I
walked down to the lab, talking to it the whole time. Upon reaching the Lab,
I put it on
the table.
Damara began to do some scans and determined it was "growing". I felt it was
just
wanting to go home...It had been hurt, tired and scared and had taken shelter
in our cargo
bay. Gill informed us that we were in the middle of a battle and could not
let it go....I
suggested that it may be able to leave without our help and told it I trusted
it to leave the
same way it was able to enter. Damara asked if I really just wanted to let it
go and I sad
yes...I felt it was not a threat to us or the ship. She lowered the security
field, and it
assumed a gaseous state and just left.
Afterwards, Algar and I headed for a fighter bay to see if Sarvok needed any
help
as we heard he was coming back damaged.

Duty Log

::log opens::

The Captain and I were detailed to attend a conference on Earth while the
rest of the crew under the command of Tamara and Sarvok was busy
investigating reports of smugglers in the sector. I made my way to shuttle
bay three where I met up with Klindt. We boarded shuttle nine and headed for
Earth. The trip was uneventful and we talked mostly of our expectations of
what topics would be covered at the conference and who we would see there.
Upon arrival, we entered SFHQ and headed straight for the information desk
in the lobby. It had been more than three years since I was last there, so I
looked around at the various changes that had been made while the captain
asked to be directed to the Sector 001 conference. The helpful Lieutenant at
the desk told him the conference was being held in conference room 23, under
the direction of Admiral T'Ja. I couldn't help but grin as I heard the
name... T'Ja and I had crossed paths before, but
that's a matter for another time.
Klindt led the way to the conference room, and pointed out the Admiral
when we passed her on the way. I think my amusement must've shown because he
eyed me curiously and asked if I had ever met her before. I replied that,
yes, I had, but I didn't elaborate... We arrived at the meeting room just
then, so he didn't have a chance to pursue the matter, which is probably
fortunate.
I chatted a bit with Commander Karis Tok, a friend of mine from Academy
days, before the conference began. It's been too long since we've seen each
other. We resolved to keep in closer touch in the future. Then it was time
for the meeting to start and I quickly slipped into my seat next to the
captain, just in the nick of time. That earned me a reproving stare from the
Admiral, but so be it... it's not the first time.
The conference was very much what I had expected: a bare bones rundown of
recent events in the sector and a plan of action for the future...in a
phrase? Ho-hum...
It didn't last too long, fortunately. I'm sure T'Ja would have loved to catch
me nodding off. Of course, the captain would have been horrified, so I did my
best to remain attentive.

Commander Periwinkle C. Mason
Executive Officer
USS Odyssey
SD9612.27

Peri is sitting at her desk, going over the reports from the various
department heads. So far they had been unexceptional. Finally, she reached
the one she always saved for last: the medical report. There were always the
expected strains, sprains, fractures, headaches...common complaints. This
week there were a few plasma burns; unfortunate, but to be expected. The part
of the report she dreaded was at the end. This time there was only one entry
but even one entry was one too many...:
>>Ensign Corne Fielde: Massive Cardiac Infarction, Internal
Hemorrhaging, Severe Cranial Bleeding<<
She closed her eyes and offered up a quick prayer to whatever deity or
spirit the ensign had held dear in life and hoped his soul had found peace at
last. Peri remembered the ensign, though she had not known him well. She made
it a point to visit all new crew members and spend a bit of time with them,
she felt it helped to facilitate her understanding of the crew as a whole.
Besides, supposing she was ever called upon to do this duty...one she
truly hated...at least she wouldn't be lying to the boy's parents when she
expressed her sympathies and shared her recollection of the kind of man their
son had been.
Sighing, she accessed Ensign Fielde's file and checked for the names of
his surviving relatives. Hmmm...just two, a younger sister, Ry, and an
elderly mother on a farm in Idaho. Poor woman! How dreadful to outlive one's
own child!
Remembering the merry ensign as she had seen him last, joking with a
group of his friends in the lounge, his head thrown back in laughter and his
eyes twinkling with good humor; she couldn't help but smile herself. No, she
thought, the boy with eyes the color of a clear terran sky and hair that
blond-brown shade of cornsilk just beginning to darken would not want anyone
to mourn him. He had done his part to keep people smiling in life and would
want them to continue smiling at their memories of him
now...
~~~~~~~~~epilogue~~~~~~~~~
So it was that when Cora Fielde, sitting in her rocking chair on her
front porch light years away, opened the box containing her son's
possessions and lifted out and activated the PADD containing Commander
Mason's message, she felt strangely comforted... almost, she thought, she
could see her dear Corne looking at her from the Commander's eyes as she
spoke. When the message ended, she put the PADD back in the box and picked
out her son's teddy bear; he had brought it with him everywhere he was
stationed, calling it his tie to home and answering all teasing with a shrug
and a grin. His Mama had made that bear for him and no one in the galaxy
could make him feel ashamed for keeping it with him.
Cora cradled the teddy in her arms as she had held Corne that first
day twenty-six years ago when she had come home from the hospital and,
looking off across the fields at the setting sun, she rocked her baby boy to
sleep one last time...
Stardate 9612.28:
Computer Begin Recording:
At 2100 hours tonight, I performed surgery on LCdrDamara. I installed a
fusion power generator, under her rib cage, on the right side, app.3 1/2
millimeters from her heart. As soon as that was done, Algar soldered wires
that I placed into a small channel running from the incision to the
mechanical area in her left leg. As soon as I laid the cahnnel I closed the
incision. As I ran the wires, I closed the channel behind them. At the
mechanical area I let Gill and Algar take over to tie in the solar
panels on Damara's left arm and leg. The whole operation was a complete
sucess. I had my assistant, Ens Fawn, give Damara a hypo of antibiotic and
she will be in my office in a week for me to check on the implant. The
patient was then awakened and all systems were tested. Ens Fawn, Gill, Algar
and I are all quite satisfied with the results.
My assistants were: Ens Fawn (instruments and hypos}
Cmdr Peri Mason (Monitoring monitors)
Lt Algar (soldering}
Lt Gill (advice on placement, and technical
work)
My deepest thanks to all who assisted me in this historic operation. Thanks
to Damara who requested that I perform the operation. I hope that the full
operating theatre enjoyed the view!
Doctor Mason closed his eyes on the leather couch, listening to the
counselor's voice. It was 1500 hours, and it was time to plunge back into
his past... Into the memories. But this time- he wouldn't be alone. She
would be with him, and he was convinced he would beat it- and find the truth
about his past.
"Breathe deeply, Rob, nice and slowly... That's it..." Her voice was calm
and soothing- a contrast of his thoughts, and feelings. Her blonde hair
was soft and flowing, pushed to the side of her face, lying gracefully on
her left shoulder. She grasped the crystal, placing her hands over his,
feeling the warmth of his hands.
As Mason drifted into his subconscious, he began to see swirling shapes,
objects, and thoughts- all rotating in a haze of both blinding and subdued
colors. Deep cherry red floated and swirled in tandem with blinding yellow
spots... The crystal glowed, and emanated a soothing warmth that both Robert
and Tamara could feel penetrate their skin, and reach deep into their souls.
He took some comfort in her delicate hands over his, helping him, and guiding
him through the realm of thought- into his past to confront the demons.
"You're doing fine....I’m going to join you now...you'll feel me in your
mind." And he did, as she eased he way into his thoughts, penetrating the
layers of emotion and surface clutter, plunging into his subconscious with
the silent ease of a soft telepathic feather. Robert felt the warmth of the
crystal in his hands, and the warmth of a Betazoid presence in his mind as he
breathed silently and deeply, concentrating on both the counselor's words,
and a mental picture of the glowing crystal.
"All right..." He wasn't indifferent to the situation, though. He found it
soothing, calming, and relaxing to feel another presence in his mind, easing
the burden of the demons, lightening the pressure of the memories, if not
sharing the torment. He breathed deeper, calmly, and relaxed, letting the
air flow out of his lungs in one long and steady stream of air.
Tamara leaned back on the couch, gripping the sky blue crystal and Robert's
hands tighter as she closed her eyes and performed the final telepathic bond
to his thoughts, his mind. She exhaled, and probed deeper.
Her presence settled itself in his mind, and suddenly wasn't so foreign. It
was a welcomed presence, a deep and personal one. As he drifted deeper into
his mind, and reached the deepest level possible, he saw both his thoughts
and hers, turning and spinning together in a whirlpool of sentience. And her
thoughts meshed with his, and he suddenly felt not only a presence, but a
bond- a special bond through which they were completely open mentally with
one another, and a bond through which there were no secrets. It was a bond
he was happy to be sharing with her.
"Take me there, Rob...Show me...." Her soothing tone rang through his ears
as he breathed again, concentrating, trying to take her back to the harsh and
unforgiving landscape where the sand stung his face, where the wind stole the
sand under his feet faster than he could find his footing, and where the
blackness and evil of the sky reigned over all. As he tried to journey back,
his head began to hurt. But it was working. The whirlpool began to slowly
fade away, untwisting to reveal that dreadful landscape that had haunted
Robert for what seemed like an eternity...
Tamara and Robert appeared in a brilliant flash of light in the midst of the
cold landscape, their eyes wandering across the horizon. She knew that with
the heightened awareness of her thoughts, Robert would be exceptionally
susceptible to extraneous thoughts and emotions emanating from his
surroundings; she kept her emotions in check, keeping both a calm face, and
soothing and reassuring thoughts. She remained almost completely detached
from her environment, knowing it wasn't real.
The swirling winds greeted them, and the swiftly moving grains of sand flew
into Robert's face. The wind penetrated his clothing, and the sky rained
down loneliness. He felt alone, and an incredible sense of guilt arose in
his soul.
"Is this the place of your memories?" Her detachment from the situation
astounded him. How could she be so objective when all of this was so real
to him? He couldn't answer, and he accepted it as part of her strong
psychological will, and a result of many years experience.
He looked around, noticing not only the sand which was swept quickly out from
under his feet, but also the bodies at his feet- slain, and lifeless. Blood
hardened on their cold bodies as the freezing wind roared at them. Robert
looked down, not wanting to see what was there, not wanting to believe. But
any thoughts or hopes of the unreality of the situation were washed away as
he saw the blood on his hands, drying, and coagulating.
“Do you see it?” Robert held up his hands, showing them, and the blood, to
Tamara. She looked regrettably at his hands, and then at the bodies. A
subtle chill went through her body.
“I see it,” Tamara said calmly. She slowly bent down to examine one of the
bodies. She turned toward Robert as he looked down at her, and then at the
ground, and the dagger lying in the sand.
“This is what killed them, I think...” He trailed off as he reached down to
pick up the dagger. He lifted it off the red sand as Tamara rolled one of
the bodies onto its back, exposing three stab wounds in its chest. An
expression of calm curiosity was on its face, as if he did not know why he
had been killed.
As if she had just heard his words, uttered more than a minute prior, Tamara
reached toward him and took the dagger from his hands. As she did so, a
small bit of black resin remained on his index finger from the handle of the
dagger.
“Do you remember this, Rob? Is it yours?” Her words broke his stream of
thought, and cut through his mind like darts. She was calm and concerned,
wanting to help him in any way she could, being sure her words were clear,
and comprehensive. Was it his dagger?
Robert looked down at his index finger, smudged with the black, sticky resin
from the dagger’s handle. He looked at the dagger in her hands now. It was
his. It had to be.
“Evidently...” He held up his finger and pointed to the handle. She saw it.
He saw it. His thoughts whirled, jumping from subject to subject. And he
began to hear the song... The song rang through him again, coming from
everywhere, anywhere, all around him. The sonata that began with
(C sharp minor)
the melody he knew so well. Its chords flowed through him. And as he heard
the music in his mind, he knew she couldn’t hear it. Only he could. It was
his memory. It was his life, and he was the only one meant to hear the
sonata. The winds ripped the sand from under his feet. The grains flew into
his face, and the planet howled in pain. Yet the sonata was strong and
consistent, playing in his mind. The chords rang out like harbingers of his
inevitable victory over the demons. The chords gave him strength, they gave
him confidence, and they gave him hope. And like Tamara, they were with him
now to aid him.
“OK, the dagger is yours and you killed this man. We know that much. Why
did you kill him?” Her voice was calm, and purely interrogatory. She didn’t
want to pressure him.
“It's used for grip- control of the weapon...” His thoughts circled back to
the resin. He knew exactly what it was. “It's carbon neutronium... Used
widely in security details...” How could he know that? He had used it
himself... But when? Here? On this planet? Maybe. Probably. Definitely.
It was beginning to get clearer- all of it, like the chord changes in the
sonata. C sharp minor to A... A to D... Each note became clearer, ringing
out brilliantly in his mind.
“Your uniform is yellow. As a security officer's.” She was leading him now,
sensing he was confused, maybe even a bit lost. He looked around the
landscape, and then nodded silently, looking down at the sleeve of his
uniform. Tamara scanned the landscape with her eyes, wanting to see what he
saw. She noticed a Starfleet Type VI shuttlecraft in the distance, settled
snugly between two sand dunes and a smooth rockface. She turned back toward
Robert.
“Look, over there. It's a Federation shuttle.” She pointed to the shuttle.
He followed her finger’s directional guidance with his eyes, and glared at
the shuttle. “Come on, Rob. Let's have a look at the shuttle. Obviously you
aren't alone here.” She started walking toward the shuttle, making her way
down the sand dune, her feet sliding on the way down. He followed her as the
wind howled in his ear. He wasn’t alone. She was here with him. Whether
there was anyone in the shuttle or not, she was here. And that was all he
needed to know.
He smiled confidently and inwardly. He reached the base of the dune, and
continued to follow her across the desert to the shuttle. “I'm starting to
remember...” He stopped short, nearly losing his balance, and pointed to a
nearby building. The structure was large and dome-shaped, with two
appendages on either side, and a large, circular collector dish aimed toward
the night sky. Moonlight
(Sonata)
reflected off the buildings surfaces, splattering it with pale blue color-
cold color, dead color. The swiftly moving grains of sand broke the
reflection constantly, so that tiny flickerings of small shadows could always
be seen as the sand passed between the moons and the building. The building
stood tall in the desolate landscape as Robert lowered his pointing finger.
“That's a solar observatory...” Robert spoke the words without hesitation-
he knew. He knew everything. But it was all locked in his mind- only to be
opened with a special key- a key he felt the beautiful woman standing beside
him had in her possession. This same woman looked gravely at the building in
question- the solar observatory. A whirl of memories in his mind spun again,
weaving a tangled web- a web that became increasingly clearer in his minds
eye. The web began to untangle with each new addition of a prop into his
memory- a building, a shuttle, a collector dish. The web untangled as Tamara
fell into step behind Robert, both making their way toward the shuttle again.
He picked up speed, and suddenly found himself rushing to the shuttle,
wanting to find something, someone, that could untangle the web further-
racing to beat the howling winds, the blackness of the night sky, and the
swirling sands- racing to beat the demons.
“Rob, what is it? Talk to me.” She noticed his distraction. She looked back
at the building, her long hair blowing in the wind behind her. Robert could
barely hear her calm and compassionate voice through the howling of the wind.
But he heard it clearly enough.
“I was on a mission... There were seven of us.. We came in a type VI
shuttle...” Robert pointed gingerly to the shuttle ahead, but Tamara ignored
his pointing hand and concentrated on his face. He was more confused than
ever, but yet somehow more focused. She fought to control the almost
overwhelming urge to tell him to forget it, to just return to the present.
She had never felt such an overwhelming need to protect anyone, with the
sole exception of Annie. She regained her hold on objectivity after only a
few brief seconds, thankful that Robert had not seemed to notice her inner
struggle.
“Our orders were to...”Robert trailed off, trying to remember. He squinted,
contorting his face to somehow reflect his feelings, and thoughts. He turned
within his own thoughts for the answers. Once more he heard her thoughts
too, and tried to filter them out, and concentrate on finding the truth.
Tamara waited silently, sensing a breakthrough...
“Our orders were to protect the Daestrom Institute Scientists...” But from
what? He tried to think, but the howling of the wind was too much, combined
with her thoughts in his mind. His concentration broke abruptly, and he gave
up temporarily. The smile which had appeared on his face as he remembered
the detail faded away with the realization that there was much more to this
mission- too much more.
“What scientists, Rob?” She was leading him, trying to help him remember.
She had noticed the break in his concentration, and she was leading him back
on track. He resumed his search into his thoughts for the truth. “The ones
at the solar observatory?” She had to quicken the pace yet again as Robert
hurried toward the shuttle.
“Federation Scientists were studying that star...” He pointed to the largest
star in a constellation of seven- it was in the vague shape of a diamond, and
his finger pointed precisely- yet he had not even looked up into the sky.
“Rob, what did you find when you came here?” Her question was one he
couldn’t answer- not yet. She placed her hands on his shoulders gently, and
turned him to face her. Their eyes met, and he stopped. He searched his
memory.
“Our mission was to protect them- and the research...” He had resumed his
hurried pace toward the shuttle, his yellow sleeves flapping in the wind, his
face stinging from the pelting of sand. He struggled to remember, and for
some time, he was silent. Tamara followed him quietly, blindly. The
memories were beginning to unfold within him and she knew she had to be
careful. She had to walk a cautious line between knowing when to use words
to jog his returning memory and when to resist speech which might break his
concentration completely.
He stopped, and examined the shuttle visually. After walking circles around
the shuttle twice, Tamara circling in the opposite direction, the two found
themselves standing together by the
shuttle’s fold-down door. He searched his memory, and then continued his
recollection, recalling detail after detail that seemed abstract- but it was
all getting clearer. “There was nothing at first.. But then there were
phaser shots...” He couldn’t remember any more now. He looked at the
signage on the doors- USS CORONA. Under this was printed, NX-59743. The
registry. But why NX? An experimental ship? What would a prototype be
doing on a mission like this? Unless.... He knew. Deep in his mind he knew
the answer, he knew-
“Open the shuttle, Rob.” Her voice was calm, and clear. They were standing
close now. Her presence warmed him as the cold wind howled around him. He
heard her perfectly... But something inside him didn’t want to open the
shuttle... Something inside-
“Robert. Open the shuttle please.” Tamara suppressed the urge to hold him and
made her voice firm. She sensed thoughts whirling out of control in his
mind.
“I don't know how...” But his fingers were flying over the access pad,
keying in the combination. He didn’t know what was happening, but he knew
the combination! How could he have known? He stared as the great door
folded down effortlessly. He looked at the large nacelles nestled on either
side of the craft, standing out of the way of the door. Tamara had also
moved back, out of the way. She looked into the shuttle when the door had
opened fully.
Tamara looked inside, noticing various armaments: Type II phasers, Phaser
Rifles, Hyperstatic Detectors, Tactical Jumpsuits, Tricorders, and Scaling
Gear (cords, rockface bolts, and elastic rope). The shuttle was outfitted
not for a mere protection detail, as the Doctor, or rather, the Security
Officer Mason, had suggested, but it was prepared for some kind of raiding
mission. She nodded for Robert to enter the shuttle, hoping that the sights,
sounds, and feel of the shuttle’s presence would help him remember.
Robert looked inside carefully, still puzzled about his knowledge of the
shuttle’s access code, and then stepped in cautiously. He looked at the
phasers, the climbing gear, and the equipment. He stepped past the shuttle’s
passenger seating compartment, and into the cockpit. There were two seats,
instead of just one. He immediately knew this was no ordinary Type VI
shuttlecraft- it had been extensively modified. The seat to the left was the
pilot’s seat- helm. The seat on the starboard side was mission operations
and tactical. The main power was still on. The controls were illuminated
and the LCARS display interfaces blinked and hummed. Tamara followed closely
behind him, performing a more detailed visual investigation.
Robert sat at helm, feeling comfortable there... As if it was where he was
supposed to be. “I was ordered to take helm... We were launched from a ship
in orbit...” He thought of the signage on the outer door, and touched the
helm console, bringing up general information. The terminal beeped, unable
to comply to his request about the shuttle’s origin, and the mission. He
tried to remember the details himself. “There was a raid- but it wasn't
us....”
Tamara joined Dr. Mason in the cockpit. She sat at mission OPS, looking
gravely into his eyes. His thoughts whirred through her mind. “Were you too
late to save the scientists?” She shifted in the seat, uncomfortable, but
not leaving his eyes with her comforting gaze.
“There was a raid...” He repeated the words, and looked into Tamara’s eyes.
He found comfort there. She was beautiful. But not only was it an external
beauty, but it was also internal. There was something about her, about her
way, that he was falling in love with... But was it just because she was
aiding him now? Helping him beat this? No. It went deeper than that... It
had to. “Too late... We found out too late...” He pushed his thoughts
about her aside as he concentrated. “No. The scientists were never in
danger...” He trailed off again, not wanting to complete the total recall,
no wanting to know what he had forgotten, not wanting to know the truth.
Duty Log, Assistant Operations Officer Ensign Justin Moody, StarDate
96.12.31
So far my training for OPS has gone well, and my senior officers have been
quite willing to inform me of my responsibilties to the officers and my ship.
The thing most different is the amount of work required. I have been training
at Flight Controls and Ops in case either space is open. The biggest thing to
worry about at Ops is coordinating all the departments (plenty more than on
the training Excelsiors at the Academy!), and Flight Controls are a dream to
work with.
I'm also a little anxious about the mission we've been briefed about. I think
that this will be vastly different than what I'm accustomed too.
ANYWAY. Back to duty! The only things unusual have been a white dwarf I got
to observe from sensors. Other than that its been routine. At my limited time
at Helm, I narrowly averted a black hole! Betcha I won't ignore the Nav unit
again! Well, I must go.
But Tamara knew he needed to get to it. She was, at first, puzzled by his
thoughts about her, but she pushed them aside, on the back burner, using an
old Terran expression, and concentrated on his struggle to remember. “Then
why were you sent here?”
Robert shook his head, trying to focus. And then all the puzzle pieces began
to fit together to form a picture as crystal clear as his love for
(Tamara?)
‘Moonlight Sonata.’ His mind worked like a computer, skimming over bits and
pieces of faded memories, scanning them for any clue- scanning them for the
truth.
As the thoughts went through his mind she stared at him. “Oh no... Oh no,
Rob.” She wanted to comfort him, hold him, but she knew that it might cause
further disruption to his already almost incoherent thought patterns. She
looked out of the forward shuttle window, seeing the bodies, the desolate
landscape, the destruction. These were all things that were mimicked in his
mind tenfold.
“There was no danger...” There wasn’t.
“We were sent here to protect them...” They were.
“But then there was a threat...” There was.... Or was there?
“People were coming...” They had come.
“They wanted to steal the research...” NO! It was wrong. He shook his head
from side to side trying to sort out what was truth from what he had
imagined, if anything. “No...” It was somehow wrong... That wasn’t their
intention... But he was told that it was... What was happening to him? Was
he finally losing it?
Tamara continued to stare out of the shuttle as his thoughts and words
floated around her. She was trying to sort them out too, but it was
extremely difficult- there was a battle inside his mind- a battle between
truth and lies... And the ammunition was his own memories, crystal clear now,
manifested in the form of the shuttle, the tactical gear, the collector dish
on the observatory... Hell, even the whole planet- it was all crystal clear,
as if it were real. But was it all real in his mind? She couldn’t answer
her own question. She closed her eyes and attempted to focus on his
incoherent thoughts.
