Lecture Brief
0012.2
DrMasonMannix
Discipline: Engineering
Topic: Damage Control - Fire Suppression, part two
Fire Suppression Agents:
In most cases, the favored fire suppression agent is a simple fire
containment force field which is projected around the fire by ceiling mounted
clusters. The forcefield simply smothers the fire, removing the oxygen
necessary to fuel the fire and traps carbon dioxide which helps to suffocate
the fire.
Larger fires may require the activation of section isolation doors and
forcefields to limit the possible spread of the fire. In such cases
extinguishing fields can and should be supplemented with manual fire
suppression techniques. Handheld fire extinguishers and equipment should be
stored in strategic places through out a ship or installation. All Starfleet
personnel are required to know the locations of fire fighting equipment on
their
ship or installation.
Alternate Suppression Agents:
Certain extremely sensitive areas of a starship or installation require the
use of alternate methods and agents of fire suppression where the use of
suppression forcefields would be ineffective or counterproductive. These
areas would include Main Engineering, Sick Bay, the Bridge (or Operations
Center), and the various weapons magazines scattered throughout a ship or
station. In all of these cases, personnel cannot be practically
evacuated in order to allow containment forcefields to be employed. For
those areas, alternate suppression agents such as nitrilimane halofoam or
fluoromane gas depending upon the type of combustible materials on fire, or
the urgency of the situation.
Inergen -
Recently, a new suppression agent called Inergen, has been introduced to
replace flouromane gas. It is an environmentally favorable three dimensional
fire suppression agent. It is electrically nonconductive and is safe for use
in humanoid occupied facilities. Inergen does not damage sensitive bionaural
equipment, has zero ozone depletion, and zero atmospheric lifetime.
Inergen is a blend of three naturally occurring gases--Nitrogen, Argon, and
Carbon Dioxide. It simply lowers the oxygen content of the protected area to
a point sufficient to sustain human life, but insufficient to support
combustion. Additionally, to protect sensitive equipment from a sudden
discharge of a strong air/gas current, Inergen discharges through specially
designed nozzles which are fitted with discharge deflectors.

Personal Fire Protection:
The exotic nature of some high technology fires has resulted in the
development of a completely new line of personal fire protection gear. Many
modern fires often dispense much more heat than flames. In fact, there are
some high technology fires which have no flames at all, but will melt
diamonds on contact. For that reason, researchers from the Vulcan Academy of
Science have invented a high-quality, multipurpose fire fighting suit which
can
withstand extreme temperatures and also protect the wearer from the flames of
a more common fire. It is called the Kiln Suit.
As you may know, a kiln is a type of furnace used to fire ceramic products
or . . . to smelt ores. In other words, it's a very hot place. Below is an
example of a Kiln Fire Fighting Suit.
This suit has multiple layers of glass and an extra layer of aluminized
glass between the wearer and dangerous heat or non-ferrous splash. These
suits are tailored to be worn with a self contained breathing apparatus
(SCBA) for protection in hostile atmospheres. Faceshield protection is
provided by a multi-layered system of tempered glass and reflective gold on a
heat resistant lens. The hoods have excellent lateral and vertical
visibility. The
suit includes a hood, coat, pants, mitts and boots, all of which must be
properly donned to completely protect the wearer. The suit also protects
against high pressure steam encountered in chemical and petrochemical plants
and storage facilities.

USF Academy Sim Summary

Dr. Mason Mannix
This week's academic focus was on Fire Suppression, a vital part of Damage
Control and part of the Engineering discipline. The cadets attended a series
of lectures this week which prepared them for tonight's Practical Exercise.
Tonight, the Faculty of USFA decided that the cadets needed to learn this
lesson in such a matter that they would never forget it. To provide that
strong motivation to learn (::extremely evil grin::), the Faculty called the
cadets out onto the lawn in front of the dormitory, then set the dormitory on
fire. The cadets were required to extinguish the blaze or lose something
very important to them.
Cadet Hatch led Alpha Company in setting up and executing fire attack
operations. Cadets Zach Callahan and Quinn Quigley led the effort to restore
the buildings automatic systems. Cadets Eryn Chase, Andrew Voliare, and
Cassi Andronicus were all instrumental in medical, rescue, and support
operations. Cadet Solvek Taran was also called upon to do multiple duties.
The fire consumed most of Alpha Company's quarters before coming under
control. Beta Company's quarters suffered a great deal of smoke and fire
suppression agent damage. With great effort, the teams worked together to
run a multifaceted attack/rescue which proved highly successful. The fire
was quickly extinguished. Afterwards, it was determined that so much damage
had been done to the dorm that the Cadets of Alpha and Beta Companies would
have
to temporarily move in with the Mannixes until those repairs could be made.
Welcome aboard to our newest Cadet, Andrew Voliare!

Anatomy of the Klingon
Lesson Presented by Professor Rachel Mannix
The Body is similar to the human. However it has twice the organs and
bones.
One is the skull cap which is visible by the raised forehead and is in
different styles and sizes. Due to DNA, the brain is backed up with twice as
many synopses. The neck is backed with a second bone around the spinal
column. There are 44 vertebrae in the column which is useful in case of
injury and strengths in the back. There are 4 more ribs two on the left
side and two more on the right side with three lungs, two main lungs and
a small lung between the two which powers breathing. The heart has eight
chambers.
The shoulders are the same as a humans. The upper arms are backup with a
long part of thin bone in the middle which is like a cushion on the bone. The
elbow is the same as the humans. The lower arm is strengthen by double the
size on the lower arm bones, making their lower arms a little larger then the
upper. The waists have 10 more carpals. The hand is almost the same expect
for reinforced thumb, middle, and index finger bones.
The stomach is doubled the size and has a thick coat of muscle inside to
hold their stronger foods and beverages like raw worm and Klingon firewine.
The liver is has a backup with a smaller secondary liver. The pancreas is the
same as a humans. There are four kidneys which gives great strength in a
stomach injury.
Their sexual organs are the same as humans except for the male has ridges
on his sexual organ, (Of course). The hips are the same. The upper leg bone
are twice the size in height giving them a average height of "6 '6, and the
lower leg bones are reinforced also with secondary bone strips along them.
The foot is the same as a humans expect with an reinforced ankle bone. (In
more aspects the Klingon Body is the stronger,even female Klingons can
precede the male in strength which in Klingon Society is accepted).

First Day Blues
OPEN LOG
Today was my first day of class. It was a demonstration on fire suppression.
Profes.. uh Dean Mannix gave us some quick instruction in the use of all the
equipment that would be available to us on a starship. But I must say, that
was nothing compared to first hand experience.
I know I got to class late but even so, fighting a real fire in the dorms
was... well let's just say it was not the same as reading about it. Even with
the thermal imager all that toxic smoke made it feel like I was blind. I
could always say that was the reason I didn't see the weakened floor but the
truth is I just didn't see it. I was to busy trying to find any trapped
Cadets that I wasn't watching where I was going. Although the instructor
haven't said anything to me about it I still feel like I failed my first
test. They were trying to teach us how to save lives, and we can't do that if
we make stupid mistakes. Maybe I'll get another chance.

DR. Mannix stood in front of us cadets ,he had just summoned us in front of
our dorms he paced back and forth as he explained the exercise we were going
to be participating in. I was Alpha team, Cadet Hatch Teg was in charge of
us... I over heard him say something about running into a blazing inferno.
This
worried me a bit. But I continued to listen on as DR Mannix spoke. He told us
about all the equipment and that we would have a chance to look it over.
After he was done speaking that is just what we got to do. He ordered us to
get with our companies and get organzed.I walked around exploring all the
stuff before me.
Hatch Said "Okay, all we need is a fire and we are in business" Just as he
said that the computer voice announced that there was smoke detected on the
third floor of the dormitory building .... It was my dorm that was going up
in flames...DR Mannix just stood there looking at us grinning ... he said it
wasn't a drill. My group moved in fast and we got suited up, with a bit of
help from others. Hatch come around and told me and Voliare to
start suiting up. We hurried a bit more to get into our suits when Hatch
yelled he thought there was a life form detected on the third floor. Hatch
ordered Voliare and I to do a two man sweep of the third floor area.
At this point flames were shooting out of the windows and smoke had gotten
thicker. Cadet Voliare and I started our way into the building moving very
slowly. I told Voliare to be extra careful. We began our sweep of the floor…
Voliare took the right side of the hall I took the left.
Just as we were checking the last of the dorm rooms the floor began to give
under Cadet Voliare, I tried to get to him… I was contacted by Hatch I told
him the severity of the situation and Voliare needed help. I told him what
floor he was on and Hatch initiated a rescue plan, he got to me and then went
back for Voliare who was okay, a bit toasty but he would live. After about an
hour the flames had been put out and we were without a home.
DR Mannix said do to this unfortunate incident we would be his house guest
for the next two weeks.

"Klingon Anatomy 101"
Dr. Mason Mannix
This week's lesson was provided by the Biology Department and was an
excellent introduction into Klingon physiology. The cadets were given a
lecture on Klingon Anatomy earlier in the week, and at sim time were asked to
put that knowledge to use in this week's Practical Exercise.
Upon their arrival at the main biology teaching lab, the cadets were
introduced to the subject of this day's exercise, a female Klingon named
Kellein from the House of Da'Tar (played wonderfully by USF Grant). After
everyone had gotten to "know" one another, the cadets boarded a specially
prepared shuttlecraft and strapped themselves in. As soon as they were
ready, a newly designed transporter beam, miniaturized our heroes to
molecular size and
deposited them inside a hypospray from which they were injected through
Kellein's arm and into her bloodstream.
The cadets traveled widely throughout Kellein's body systems. They kept in
communication via specially amplified sound equipment and through visuals put
up on the main viewer in the lab. The cadets faced many biological
challenges during their journey, not the least of which were Kellein's own
white blood cells.
Later, the intrepid cadets happened upon a rather interesting discovery.
They found out that Kellein of the House of Da'Tar was pregnant. Further
investigation revealed the presence of Vulcan DNA in the fetus. The good
health of the baby was confirmed, and the cadets were safely extracted and
re-enlarged.

DUTY LOG
I ran into class, I was late, I stood at attention and prepared for class I
grabbed a lab coat and followed the other cadets to a sliding door that
opened behind the lab stage revealing a small shuttle craft. I stepped up and
took my seat at the science station. All science sensors were operational.
The
SHUTTLE was shrunk to a microscopic size and was placed in a Hypospray. We
were then prepared and injected into a Female Klingons bloodstream directly
into an artery. This however
caused a minor flux in her blood pressure. After about 10 min I picked up
white blood cells approaching the shuttle craft. It seemed at first her body
was rejecting us. Later after we continued further on we were forced towards
her abdomen. We ended up in her uterus...We detected another life sign, seems
this woman ,our study subject was very pregnant. Also detected was Vulcan DNA
along with her Klingon DNA. I did a Bio scan on the fetus and found it
to be of excellent health.

I have never been so glad to be on the ground in my life. The day
started fine enough. Dad came to open house. ::audible sigh:: He's still a
jerk for what he did to us... he still refuses to give us just a bit of our
powers back. You know it would be interesting to see how well he'd deal with
not having his powers. Anyway... someone had started a fog machine in the
visitors center. Quint and I headed in since we had security detail and
checked out what was going on. It was harmless, but Quint found something
that will come in quite useful I think. Anyways, we ended up getting called
over to Nova Squadron's shuttle bay. It turns out that Eryn was giving a
tour of the bay to someone known as Jess and she had activated that intruder
alert. Turns out that Jess took Quint, Eryn and myself on a joyride when I
was unable to deactivate the launch sequence and we all hopped into the
shuttle to stop it. Needless to say the shuttle was already preprogrammed for
the stunts that the famed squadron does at shows. Needless to say I dont
think that I'll be going up in a shuttle anytime soon.

USF Academy Sim Summary

Campus Open House
Dr. Mason Mannix
The Academy was a beehive of activity during our annual Open House.
Prospective students, alumni, and in some cases . . . parents, had dispersed
about the campus, taking in the sights, smells, and sounds of Academy life.
In all cases, the cadets, themselves, led all of the tours. From a Dean's
point of view, Open House is always a great day.
Our two guests, prospective students Morgana Shea and Jessica Knight were
each assigned to experienced cadets for their respective tours. Cadets
Volaire and Callahan were entrusted with Morgana, while Cadets Ataris Knight
and Eryn Chase escorted Jessica. Professor Quigley (Q), the father of the
Quigley brothers was also in attendance and Cadet HatchTeg was assigned to
VIP duty. Much to their chagrin, the Quigley brothers were both assigned to
Security duty for the Open House.
While I "enjoyed" the company of Q (Professor Quigley), Cadet Volaire seemed
to be making the most of his time with Morgana. I am not sure what parts of
the Academy she actually saw, but from all accounts, she left here with a big
smile on her face. The Quigley brothers, on the other hand, apparently had
their hands full with Miss Jessica Knight, on campus by the authorization of
Flt. Captain John Styre.
Miss Knight decided that she really wanted to get up close and personal with
the Nova Squadron's fighters, and wrote a page in Academy lore by taking the
fighter, Cadet Chase and both Quigley brothers on a very cramped joyride.

Office of the Dean
Stardate 0011.02
Fleet Captain John Styre
Commanding Officer
USS Lothlorien
Dear Fleet Captain Styre,
This transmitted letter is in regard to your niece, Miss Jessica Knight.
Miss Knight was in attendance at our semiannual Open House and Visitation
Day. Since your signature also appears at the bottom of the authorization of
attendance form, it is you whom I must inform about a certain incident which
occurred on our campus and heavily involved Miss Knight.
Unfortunately, I cannot as yet give you an accurate account of the entire
incident, as the investigation is still in progress. However, I will pass on
what I do know at this time. Needless to say, this is a very serious
situation your niece has gotten herself into.
Yesterday, Miss Jessica Knight was assigned to Cadets Eryn Chase and Ataris
Knight (no relation of which I am aware) for her tour of the Academy grounds
and facilities. Apparently, your niece was most interested in the stunt
fighters of our Nova squadron and expressly asked to see them. The cadets
happily and properly obliged and took Jessica to the Nova Squadron's Flight
Line. The events after that point are unclear and remain under
investigation.
We do know, as it was confirmed by several witnesses and the USFA Security
Log, that an Intruder Alert was issued for the Nova Flight Line. I am told
by the squadron leader that such an alarm could only occur if an unauthorized
individual opened one of the cockpits. Surveillance records indicate that
the person who opened the cockpit was indeed, Miss Jessica Knight. However,
no explanation has yet come forth as to why the attending
cadets allowed that to happen.
Be that as it may, Flight Control Logs recorded that the startup sequence
for the Nova fighter was somehow activated. In addition, two cadets on
Security Detail (Cadet Quinn Quigley & Cadet Quint Quigley) for the evening,
responded to the scene and reported that the Launch sequence had also been
activated.
The events after the Security Response are still unclear, pending a full
investigation by the Academy Provost. However, the Nova fighter did take off
with Miss Jessica Knight on board, as well as Cadet Chase and the Quigley
brothers. Cadet Ataris Knight stayed behind. Please keep in mind that a
Nova fighter was designed for only one occupant, yet four people were crammed
into the cockpit, a very unsafe condition.
Additionally, there are many reports of several aerobatic stunts being
performed at extremely low altitude over some of the historical parts of the
campus, including the Chapel. When the fighter finally did land, your niece
was at the controls. The Provost immediately impounded the craft and
informed all involved to file reports within 24 hours.
I must tell you that the Provost was ready to place Jessica under arrest at
that very minute. However, as a favor to you as a talented former student, I
personally intervened and arranged for her to stay at my house until the
investigation is complete. I intend to formally talk to your niece later
this afternoon.
Privately, I must tell you that I believe there is plenty of misconduct to
go around, and I will see to it that the cadets involved understand what may
have gone wrong. But, I must allow due process and give the Provost time to
review the reports and make his recommendation. In the meantime, I would
appreciate any information, testimony, or depositions you can send to me
concerning Miss Knight's conduct on the Lothlorien. That should be
enough for me to get her off the proverbial "hook".
On a happier note, it is easy to see that Miss Knight is a young woman with
a remarkable talent. Her talent for flight operations is so great that even I
would not presume to persuade her to alter her career path to Science. She
is a natural pilot. It is just that talent nor the young woman, have yet
been tempered by discipline.
I look forward to one day seeing her among the ranks at Graduation one fine
June afternoon. But, first I need to help her out of this "predicament".
Sincerely,
Dr Mason Mannix
Dean of USF Academy

Stardate 00.11.01. Today was campus wide Open House and the cadets were
assigned as tour guides to the visiting dignataries and parents. Quinn and I
were assigned as security during the campus tours. Soon after everyone left,
we recieved a call about pink fog in the visitors center. We rushed over to
discover that someone had
placed a fog maker in there as a prank. Quinn shut it off, and as soon as it
dissipated, we got another call.
Apparently the Nova Squadron Hanger was having an incident involving Cadet
Chase and a civilian named Jessica Knight. We beamed over to the hanger and
observed Ms. Knight near the cockpit attempting to enter into a fighter.
Quinn and I got them away from the shuttle but then the shuttle's systems
activated and warmed up for a pre-programmed flight sequence. Quinn jumped
in to the cockpit to try and shut it down, Jessica went up after him. Cadet
Chase and myself then entered the fighter. The shuttle then engaged engines
and we ended up taking a painfull but exhilirating ride.
Everyone is safe and sound now. It looks like this Parent's Day was the most
eventful one seen at the Academy in a long time.

Lecture Brief
Diplomatic Protocol
0011.07
Dr. Mason Mannix
Introduction:
This week's lesson on Romulan history and society is a very important one.
Not only is it designed to introduce you to another culture, but it is also
designed to teach you how to act as officers in diplomatic situations.
Coolness under pressure, good discretion, and most importantly, excellent
manners are the keys to successful diplomatic relations. Disrespect, poor
judgment, and indiscretion, especially in this case, could result
in a serious diplomatic incident or even an interstellar war.
Ground Rules:
The Practical Exercise will be held inside the Romulan Embassy. It is
crucial that you understand that the Romulan Embassy is the Romulan Star
Empire. The laws and customs of the Romulan Star Empire apply within the
gates to the Embassy compound. The Federation does not have jurisdiction
inside those walls. If you screw up, it will take high level diplomatic
negotiations to pull your chestnuts out of
the fire. You must understand that.
Courtesies:
Dress uniforms are required! The cadets, as a group, must enter together.
Stragglers are considered a diplomatic insult to the host. No cadet may
break away from the group and go "exploring" without an invitation to do so
from the Romulans. You must partake of any food or beverages offered.
Failure to do so is considered a diplomatic insult.
Conclusion:
You must be on your best behavior. Cadet leaders will be announced just
prior to your departure to the Romulan Embassy. These leaders will be
responsible for the conduct of all cadets. Above all, remember that once you
enter those Embassy gates, you are in the Romulan Star Empire, and are
official representatives of the Federation. Good luck.

As instructed by Mr. Mannix, we went to the Romulan Embassy to take a tour
and learn about the Romulan's history, practices and how to deal with them.
Once we beemed to the Embassy, we split up into our two companies. Eryn as
the most senior rank of our company, took the lead and represented us in
dealing with the Romulan tour guide.
The tour started off as expected, they talked about their history and such.
Telling us how superior they are to everyone else in the universe. The usual
boring stuff. Then as we went into the art gallery, an alarm went off and
disruptor was fired.
The Alpha Company was captured and held hostage first by this wacko trying to
get a message across about the current alliance. Then more beamed into our
location and has captured us as well. I don't know what has happened with
the others but I heard someone screaming... it sounded like Volaire.
We have no way to get out. Mannix knows about our status and I'm sure has
take action. We could dare attack, but we are outnumbered, outgunned and in
enemy territory.

Sim Summary - 0011.15
Dr. Mason Mannix
This week was the exciting conclusion to our two-part National Lampoon
Romulan Vacation. Needless to say that the situation was in crisis up to the
very last minute and the lives of many of my cadets hung in the balance,
typical Star Trek stuff. Yeah, right. Not with these guys!
First of all, the sim plot was designed by one of the cadets, so that lends
itself to charges of sadomasochism against all involved. In this plot, my
hapless cadets were caught in the middle of a political dispute between the
current Romulan Government and a militant faction dedicated to the
dissolution of the Romulan-Federation Alliance. Half of the cadets were
being held by the militant group and the other was being held by the Rihannsu
Loyalists.
Those of us at the Academy could only arrange for isolation of the Romulan
Embassy and begin higher level negotiations. Fortunately, we were able to
contact the Romulan Praetor, who was able to put some pressure on the
dissidents.
However, it was the Loyalists who seized an opportunity and charged the
dissidents with help from some of the cadets. At the sound of phaser fire,
Romulan ground forces stormed the Embassy compound, and the situation was
quickly resolved with no cadet fatalities and only one minor injury.
All cadets were freed from their ordeal just in time to take their exams
and to prepare for Parent's Day next week.
Congratulations to Cadet Zack Callahan, who was awarded the Academy Fine
Arts Medal for his development of such a dramatic sim.

The Rihannsu
"Children of the Elements"
Lecture by Professor Caen ir'Lyn Cha'Zetak
University of Ch'Rihan
Intro
In ancient Vulcan, the word "Rihannsu" means "The Declared." The term you
use for us, "Romulans," is almost vulgar to us. Naming them after humans
raised by wolves? Come now, who would not take offense to that?
The one thing you must remember about the Rihannsu, in hearing our tales, is
that we are a passionate people. Though often we appear much like our
cousins-stoic, cold, calculating-we balance that nature with our strong
emotions. This makes us a race that cannot be judged on their outward
appearance, or judged in any way. Though that is true of any race, it is
especially true of "The Declared."
History
The Rihannsu culture descends from the Vulcans, but has since changed
drastically from what they previously were.
The tale of the early Rihannsu begins on the war torn Vulcan, two thousand
Earth years ago. As you may already know, this was the time when Surak began
to teach his logic, the IDIC philosiphy, and his followers were numbering
much larger. Among his people was one of his most trusted advisors and
Lieutenants, a man named S'Task.
When the Vulcans first encountered radio transmissions from an
extraterrestrial culture, they were so shocked that a complete siece fire was
declared. This is about equivalent, to make an analogy you all might
understand better, to World War II stopping dead, on both sides.
The alien promises were many and grand, and so the ever logical Vulcans went
to meet with them. Surak, who was essentially the Leader of the planet at the
time, was to go and greet them, but his shuttle malfunctioned, so S'Task was
sent ahead.
When the Vulcans got to the landing site, they were immedietly attacked and
captured, a good portion of the Vulcan leadership held for ransom. When the
Vulcans refused to bow to these people, war started up again. But this time,
all were united against these aliens. It is not known, for sure, who the
aliens were, though most records from that period indicate a band of Orion
pirates, with some other species working with them to prey on weaker,
undeveloped races.
During this war, Surak continued to offer the Pirates a peaceful solution.
Many Vulcans used their psionic abilities to force the Pirates to attack each
other, pilot their ships into the suns, that sort of thing.
Those who were captured, though, were made into slaves on large vessels.
S'Task, one of said slaves, lead a violent revolt on his slaveship, he and
his followers killing hundreds of the Orions and eventually ramming the
vessel into the Orion Mothership, while all escaped. The Pirates quickly left
Vulcan.
S'Task returned to Vulcan as a hero to many, though Surak criticized him for
resorting to violence. It is this one event that did shape the future of
billions of people.
S'Task decided that this universe was far too violent to allow pacifism to
function well, and began to gather followers who believed this as well. He
did not wish to shatter the fragile unity which had continued to hold on
Vulcan after the Orion War (known as the Ahkh). So, with 120000 followers,
S'Task left Vulcan in 16 slow, impulse vessels.
The journey was not easy. Many died on the vessels, many more died because
the vessels were destroyed by natural disasters and malfunctions, after being
in constant use for decades. The Declared used the star maps obtained from
crashed Orion ships, and distrusting the data, planned a circuitous route,
going around any star mentioned, looking for a habitable planet. They were
blessed with two, though only 5 of the 16 ships remained to share in this
wealth.
100 years later (exact date unknown), they arrived at the twin worlds of
what you now call Romulus and Remus, but what we have called, and always will
call, Ch'Rihan and Ch'Havran. "Of the Declared" and "Of the Travellers." Soon
after, they resumed the wars that had torn Vulcan apart.
In the first 10 years of settlement on the Twin Worlds, of the 18 000
surviving Rihannsu, 6 000 died, from war or famine or disease.
Roughly 60 years after settlement, the nation of Elheu, lead by T'Rehu,
conquered much of the Rihannsu, and T'Rehu declared herself Ruling Queen,
imposing a dictatorship on many of the people, in what she declared the "age
of the rule of women". This did not last, though. 30 years later, the eastern
nations rose up and took over, and imposed the TriCameral Government, which
still remains to this day, over 2300 years later.
The Rihannsu prospered under this government, and were unified under this
system. For 1500 years they developed on their own, working their way back up
to insterstellar travel (technology for which had been lost after they
landed) and began destroying any vessel which entered their system. Though
they had formidable weapons, warp drive was still a technology that escaped
them.
The first Federation vessel to contact the Rihannsu was lucky it was not
destroyed. They evaded the early warning system they had in place, and got
directly to Ch'Rihan, beaming radio messages. When the Rihannsu did not
answer, the USS Carrizal left the system.
The Rihannsu looked upon this vessel as they had known aliens before-violent
and untrustworthy. With their experience, you can hardly blame them.
Though their technology was crude, their resilience wasn't. They constructed
thousands of crude vessels, and annihilated any Federation vessel which came
into their system, eventually acquiring warp drive from downed ships. Thus
began the First Romulan War.
The Federation's forces continually got annihilated by the Romulans, until
they defeated the Rihannsu once, embarassingly. This precipitated the Treaty
of Alpha Trianguli, in which the Neutral Zone (or Outmarches, as the Rihannsu
call it) was established. This Treaty is unique in that it was negotiated
entirely by subspace radio. The Romulans refused to meet with any Ambassador,
or to see any, even. No Federation person had ever seen a Rihanna,
since the war had been fought only in space.
About 100 years later, in the late 2260's (exact date unknown) the Romulans
and Klingons formed their Alliance. During this Alliance, they ended broke
the Treaty and attacked various Federation outposts along the Neutral Zone.
Kirk confronted them, and a small conflict ensued. About 30 years later, the
Romulan/Klingon Alliance was dissolved, and the animosity between the two
grew. Since then, the Romulans have made attacks against the Federation and
other Empires, but have now become powerful allies to the Federation, if
unsteady ones.

The Rihannsu
"Children of the Elements"
Lecture by Professor Caen ir'Lyn Cha'Zetak
University of Ch'Rihan
Society
Rihannsu Society is based on a house system, in which each house has certain
prestige and honor attached to it, much like the Klingon system. But our
houses are very different.
In a House, all members of it, from the head to the servant, adopt the house
name, which is usually accompanied by a prefix showing their gender,
possibly. Some of the older Houses use the prefix Cha, though most use the
prefix tr' for males and t' for females. For example, in the house of Varik,
Aehl'nan'hwi M'Iraen tr'Varik would be a male, while his mate might be L'Rana
Nikara t'Varik.
These names are very important to a Rihannsu. Giving someone permission to
use one's first name is giving something away. Before that, one must always
refer to a Rihanna by their last name, and make sure they do so of the LAST
name, not any of the middle names, of which there can be many.
Now, back to the House system. Houses gain respect through the people in
them, and their deeds. All members of a house are tied together in honor and
prestige. Though the Rihannsu honor is not as strict as the Klingon one (i.e.
they have little wish to die gloriously, or at all) they do wish to earn
power, and so do honorably.
Rihannsu religion is simple-they believe in the four basic Elements-Earth,
Fire, Water, Air-and that these Elements guide one's path, but don't choose
it. At the end of a Rihanna's life, after they pass beyond the veil, they are
judged by these Elements to determine which part of the afterlife they will
go to.
Conclusion
By Professor Varyn Ubo, Starfleet Academy
The Rihannsu, at large, are much like a child from an abusive family. Until
they learn violence isn't the way, they will continue to be violent, and
deceptive, and do anything they can to preserve themselves.
Though it may not look like it, they are scared. Scared of what the universe
will do to them if they get too close. You, as the new generation, must help
guide them, and show them that not everyone will hurt them, if given the
chance.

Sim Summary

Dr. Mason Mannix
This week was Parent's Week at the Academy. The cadets invited family
members to tour the academy facilities and grounds and to get a taste of USF
Academy life. The week was topped off by the Fall Session Awards ceremony,
held with much pomp and pageantry in Dahlgren Hall. Cadets, parents,
faculty, and alumni all took part in the festivities.
We did have one itty bitty little scare. It seems that during the Academy
tours, something went terribly wrong in the Biology Building. Apparently
some sort of experiment had temporarily gone out of control. Starfleet
Troopers were called in to quell this minor problem and quickly secured the
area. Full disclosure of what actually happened in the Biology Building has
yet to be disclosed. But, no matter what it was, it could not dampen the
spirit of the evening.
Dahlgren Hall was decked out in all the best finery and was packed to the
rafters with proud parents and excited guests. Faculty, Staff, and honored
alumni took their places in full dress uniforms and academic regalia. The
cadets themselves marched into the Hall in resplendent white uniforms
complete with swords and sashes for the leaders.
The Dean of the Academy, Dr. Mason Mannix, officiated the ceremonies and
was ably assisted by Academy Alumnus Fleet Captain John Styre of the
Lothlorien. Many awards and promotions were bestowed on the cadets.
Plebes Andrew Voliare, Solvek Taran, Ataris Knight, Cassiopeia Andronicus,
Quint Quigley, and Quinn Quigley were promoted to Freshmen. Freshmen Zack
Callahan, Hatch Teg, and Eryn Chase were promoted to Sophomores. They were
also given the duties and responsibilities of Cadet Company Commanders.
Alpha and Beta Companies both won the Meritorious Unit Citation for their
bravery and performance in the Romulan Embassy Crisis. Beta Company won
the Honor Company designation for the Fall Session. Cadet Andrew Voliare was
awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action at the Embassy crisis.
Cadet Solvek Taran was awarded the prestigious Dean's Medal for his
achievements during the Fall Session.

Background Story

Dr. Mason Mannix
"Nobody saw it coming, Dean. I swear!"
"Then everybody in Biology is blooming idiot?! Is that what you're trying
to tell me, Schumacker?"
"No, Dean Mannix . . . I mean . . ." The Chair of the Biology Department
could feel himself wilting under the Dean's gaze. "Nobody thought that it
could all go this wrong. Starfleet Security convinced me that it was safe to
keep them here."
It took every ounce of strength to keep Mason Mannix under control and keep
from throttling the man were he stood. He clenched both fists over and over
again, finally settling on driving them against the top of his mahogany desk.
The hard wood groaned loudly under the force of the blows, nearly giving way.
Mason stood up from behind the desk and leaned across it so that his nose was
inches from Schumacker's face.
"You trusted Starfleet Security?!" Mason thundered. "Then you are worse
than an idiot! You, Professor Schumacker, are dangerously incompetent!"
Schumacker shuddered, then openly began to weep. "I'll resign immediately,
Dean Mannix."
Mannix's fist again boomed against the top of the desk. "No, you will not,
Professor! There is no time for that! No time! Do you hear me, Professor?"
Mason grabbed the man by his tie and yanked him halfway across the desk.
"Tell me where it stands now, Schumacker. That Trooper Commander is on his
way here, and I want to know everything before that Fleeter gets here."
Mannix threw Schumacker back into the chair from whence he came. "Now,
talk!"
Schumacker had never seen Mannix this furious and was actually quite glad
to still be alive. He tried to sit up straight, but only succeeded in
propping himself up on one elbow. "Dean Mannix, they are contained."
"On Sub-level Seven, Professor! They control everything down to Sub-level
Ten. You call that contained?"
"Well . . . they haven't been able to get any farther than that, Dean."
"La -di -da, Schumacker! The entire Biology Building is off limits because
of your little incident. Do you realize how badly you've screwed with the
Winter class schedule? Not to mention, you've put the entire campus at risk
from being attacked by those creatures or being shot to death by those
Fleeter Troopers!" Mannix came around from behind the desk and towered over
the man cringing in the chair. "Now quit whining and give me the
information I need to deal with the problem!"

Background Story
0011.27.2
Dr. Mason Mannix
Professor Schumacker struggled to pull himself together. On other days, he
was a proud and efficient department chair and capable teacher, though
somewhat lacking in sound judgment. He was well aware that a situation that
never should have been allowed to exist, had exploded underneath his very
nose. He took a look into Mannix's ferocious eyes, and forced himself to sit
straight up in the chair. His hand
shaking, he pulled the handkerchief from his coat pocket and dabbed at the
perspiration on his upper lip. "Well, Dean," he stammered, "it all started
when Doctor Ripley needed a secluded place to examine these creatures . . ."
Mannix dismissed that statement with a wave of his hand. "I don't care
about the preliminaries, Professor Shumacker. Just tell me where things
stand now. We'll investigate the causes after I have a safe campus again."
Schumacker nodded. "As you've said, the creatures control Sub-levels Seven
through Ten. A quadruple redundant containment field has been placed on all
entrances to Sub-level Seven, and around the entire building. Troopers are
at every check point between the building entrance and the Command Post set
up on Sub-level Six."
"That's more like it, Schumacker." Mannix nodded his approval. "Go on."
"All power has been cut off to the Sub-levels Seven through Ten. There are
at least six of the creatures on the loose down there."
"At least?" Mannix stared hard at the man. "Please tell me you know
exactly how many of these . . . these . . . creatures we are dealing with?"
"Six, Dean." Schumacker looked off into space and back down to Mannix.
"It's just that Doctor Ripley had started a breeding program, and I am not
certain as to how far she has gotten with it."
"A breeding program? Isn't it bad enough that Starfleet Security saw fit
to lock them up on my campus?" Mannix threw a padd across the room,
shattering it into pieces. "I don't suppose you know where Doctor Ripley is,
do you?"
"She didn't make it out." Schumacker gulped. "The Troopers activated the
containment fields before we could locate her."
"Great! That's just great!" Mannix stood up from his chair again, walked
to the window, bent down and braced himself on the sill with his hands, and
gazed out across the campus. He took a deep breath and sighed heavily.
"Dean Mannix?" Came the voice over the comm system. "The Troop Commander
is here. Shall I send him in?"
Mannix didn't even look up from the window. "Very well." Turning slowly
from the window he looked at Schumacker. "You may as well stick around until
I am finished with this bozo."

Background Story
0011.27.3
Dr. Mason Mannix
Colonel Wade Bickman of the Starfleet Security Troopers strode purposefully
into the office of the Dean of the Academy. "I am here as you requested,
Doctor Mannix, but please be brief. I have much to do today."
Mannix whirled from the window. "I should think you've done way too much
already, Colonel."
"Hardly." Bickman gave one look at the quivering mass of Professor
Schumacker, cowering in a chair, then turned to face Mannix. "I was kept
from completing my duties by some misguided Dean."
"I was not about to let any part of this campus become a shooting gallery,
especially on Parent's Day." Mannix stepped behind his desk and sat down as
his ice blue eyes carved through the Trooper. "Your people shot one of your
own men, right in front of my cadets and their families. I was not going to
let that happen again."
Bickman seethed. "That trooper was shot for his own good, Dean. I had a
job to do and a situation to contain. I don't give a rat's butt what special
day it was on campus or what crybabies happened to see it. A crisis is no
time to be nice."
"Well, we agree on one thing, Colonel." Mason paused for a moment. "I am
in no mood to be nice."
"My people risked their lives . . . ."
"Your people were thrown into a situation that never should have existed!"
"Your predecessor properly approved this campus as the site for the ongoing
experiments. You have no say in this now, Dean Mannix."
"Like Hell, I don't!" Mannix thundered. "This campus and every person on
it is my responsibility, Colonel. My job is to teach these young cadets how
to be Starfleet Officers. That is the only acceptable mission for this
institution!"
"This is no time to argue about that, Dean, even though I would love to
debate you."
"You're not worthy of a debate with me, Bickman. You were an idiot when
you attended here and you are an idiot now." Mason shrugged and kept his
voice flat. "Funny how some things don't change."
"Whatever, Mannix." Bickman was quite finished with pleasantries. "I just
came here to tell you that my troopers will be resolving this issue within
the next seventy-two hours."
"Resolve the issue?" Mannix laughed. "The only people that become
Starfleet Security Troopers are the Phys Ed majors! This problem requires
some kind of intelligence. Hell, even my cadets could do a better job than
your troopers."
"You're not serious!"
"Watch me!" Mannix tapped his console and opened up the Academy's Comm
Net. "Your attention, please! Alpha, Beta, and Gamma companies report to
the Dean's Office, on the double!"

Practical Exercise
0011.29
Ripley's Believe it or Not
prepared by Dr. Mason Mannix
Introduction:
This exercise will involve the use of many disciplines of study all at
once. It is meant to teach you, the cadet, how to deal with a crisis
situation and how to resolve it in the most efficient and safe manner. You
will face extreme danger and unimaginable pressure. You will be forced to
rely on the word and actions of your fellow cadets, with little hope of being
bailed out if they make a mistake. You will learn to trust each
other and will come to know each other much better than you had before this
exercise began.
Background:
Last week during Parent's Day, a situation occurred in the Biology
Building. You all noticed that a large contingent of Starfleet Security
Troopers surrounded the building and attempted entry. Some of you also
witnessed the shooting of one trooper by his fellows as the trooper in
question came running and screaming from the building. This was the result
of idiotic planning and almost criminal negligence regarding the safety of
everybody on this
campus.
Some months prior to my appointment as Dean of the Academy, my predecessor
foolishly allowed Starfleet Security the use of the sub-levels of the Biology
Building. Needless to say, he didn't bother to check what those sub-levels
were being used for.
Under the direction of Starfleet Security, Doctor Ann Ripley, a
xenobiologist of fairly good reputation, but of precious little common sense,
moved her "research project" to the aforementioned sub-levels of the Biology
Building. Starfleet Security clamped a "Top Secret" label on every level of
the building below ground level. Little did the students above ground know
what they were sitting on.
Dr. Ripley's Research Project:
Many centuries ago, approximately mid to late 21st Century in Earth
history, an encounter was made with an extremely violent alien being. The
being was found to be extremely intelligent and a thousand times as deadly.
The species was accidentally encountered, but rapidly presented earth with
it's first major crisis.
Several more disastrous encounters followed, with many people losing their
lives to these creatures. However, many years after the initial encounters,
the aliens were no longer contacted and were not heard from again.
Understandably, no one botherd to go looking for them.
Strangely, no other Federation world has any records of any similar
encounters with these aliens. Intelligence reports say that even known
Federation adversaries and independent worlds have no knowledge of the aliens
which terroroized human space explorers so long ago.
However . . . two years ago Ferengi cargo vessel came across what they
thought was a long abandoned trading post. The crew explored the derelict
buildings looking for salvageable and marketable items. Unfortunately for
them, the hapless Ferengi stumbled across a nest of our large, purple aliens
and lost nearly half their crew before they could escape the planet.
The Federation quickly received word of the Ferengi encounter, dispatched
Dr. Ripely to investigate, and slapped a big "Top Secret" label on it.
Ripley took the imaginative step of quarantining the planetoid on which the
aliens had been found, and isolated them by gradually reducing their access
to the surface of the planet. Eventually, she was able to turn the place
into a laboratory and began a "noninvasive" study of the creatures.
Just before her relocation to our campus, the aliens began to get some
outside help from some of their friends. In short, several alien raids were
attempted on Ripley's planetoid. More and more Starfleet Troopers were
deployed as the attacks grew more frequent and powerful.
In attempt to solve the problem of the attacks, some Starfleet Security
idiot came up with the idea of moving these creatures from place to place
over a period of time, a giant "shell game" as it were. Guess who became the
first shell?
The Aliens:
Below are the images of these creatures. However, the images don't come
close to doing them justice. They have acid for blood, and are so fast that
they can move three times before a human can move even a finger. They are
violent, relentless, and give no quarter. Why Starfleet Security thought
they could keep them here is beyond me.
Current Situation:
There are 10 sub-levels below the ground level of the Biology Building.
The creatures had been confined to the 10th sub-level. Somehow, the
containment fields were breached, and the creatures gained access to all
levels from Sub-level 7 to sub-level 10. The best that the Troopers could do
was reestablish containment at Sub-level 7. That containment has held, but
no progress has been made in returning the creatures to Sub-level 10.
Additionally, Dr. Ripley and, at last count, 11 troopers are missing on
these sub-levels.
Starfleet Security insists that it would be fine with them if we just left
those levels of the Biology Building to the creatures and just keep them
sealed. Needless to say, the man who told me that now wants to bring me up
on charges of hitting a Starfleet Officer.
Be that as it may, I intend to show these Troopers (ex phys ed majors) how
disciplined and resourceful cadets can solve a situation like this.
The Mission:
Mission Goal One - Seek out, engage, and force the creatures back down to
sub-level 10 and reestablish containment at that level. This is to prepare
for a special xenobiology team from Vulcan who will coordinate the removal
and future disposition of the aliens.
Mission Goal Two - Locate and rescue Doctor Ripley and any surviving
troopers.
Mission Goal Three - Seal all levels between sub-level 10 and sub-level 7 to
further inhibit any possible escape attempt by the aliens until the Vulcan
team can manage a safe extraction.
Mission Procedures: assignments will be made at the beginning of the sim.
Control Team (use brown font) - Your mission is the same as the bridge of a
Starship or Ops Center on a Station or Outpost. You will be at Command Post
on sub-level 6 and will be charged with managing the mission. You must
gather any and all pertinent information and get it to the teams that need
it. You are also charged with the safety of the field teams.
Contact Team (use blue font) - Your mission is to seek out and make contact
with the aliens. You are to drive them back down to sub-level 10 and hold
them there until the containment team can seal them in.
Containment Team (use green font) - Your mission is to restore power to each
of the effective levels and to assist the Contact Team in driving the Aliens
back to sub-level 10. Any humans encountered will be your responsibility.
Once the creatures have been pushed to sub-level 10, you will reestablish
containment on that level, then secure and contain each level back up to the
Command Post.
Mission Equipment: All equipment is considered to belong to each team member
unless otherwise specified.
Body Armor - Full-body, acid resistant armor. Acid damage rate is
one-thousandth that of unprotected skin.
Weapons - One Type III phaser rifle, one type II phaser sidearm, 6 photon
grenades
Miscellaneous - First-aid kit, tricorder, and anything else requested by the
teams. Containment Team will carry two complete sets of tools for work on
the power systems.
Final Instructions:
1). Come back alive!
2). You are free to defend yourselves in whatever manner you deem necessary.
3). I personally don't care if you get them before they can get you.
4). Good luck!

Zack Callahan was in charge of the team I was on, along with Cadet Volaire,
and Cadet Andronicus. We all proceeded to suit up in acid-resistant body
armor.
We checked the power cell's to all Phaser rifle's and hand Phaser's, checked
lights and other equipment. We followed Zack to the turbolift which was to
take us to Sub-level 7. For some reason we had no power to the turbolift.
Zack contacted Cadet Chase, she informed us that she controlled the power to
the lift. After a few moments we came to a complete stop, the doors open and
the corridor was completely dark. We proceeded with caution. A BLOB of
some kind attacked us, we were unsure of what it was I fired at it and it
scattered into several pieces, it landed on our suits and started to burn
through. Cassi picked up a lifeform several meters in front of us. We headed
for investigation with caution. Just then something came out and slapped
Zack. It moved so fast no one seen it. Cassi picked up the lifeform readings
again about 30 meters in front of us, it was the lifeless body of a trooper
the
creatures tossed him at us. We came in contact with another trooper,
tricorder readings showed no life signs. We all opened fire on the trooper
and his chest exploded to reveal an alien of smaller size, we killed it. We
all proceed further on to the next turbolift. We stepped in and heard a
click, Zack contacted Cadet Chase and the problem was resolved. Also Cadet
Quint Quiggly was beamed in to our location as back up. We ended up on

Tonight was the Lighting of the Campus Christmas tree, the evenings events
were overseen by the Academy's new Provost Commander Torah. All Cadets were
given a task to perform. Cadet's Callahan,Chase and Cadet Knight were in
charge of decorating they began by setting up a Nativity scene and a Menorah.
The lighting of the tree was going to be promptly at 22:30 hours (10:30).
Cadet's Taran, Voliare and Andronicus were in charge of the weather for
the evening. Cadet Voliare had informed Cadet's Andronicus and Taran that he
had made some minor adjustments a bit of tweaking, to the machine. What
happened next was unbelievable. Voliare with PADD in hand was tapping away on
making sure everything was set, Cadet Andronicus was monitoring the settings,
Voliare told Taran to flip the switch, the machine sputtered,
come to find out Taran had hit the red button and not the green one, this
wasn't good! They heard the new Provost announce that all cadets were to
assemble in front of the tree in seven minutes. Voliare hurried to correct
the problem and Taran hit the switch again, It began to snow. Meanwhile
Ataris Knight had slipped off somewhere, and unaware to anyone else she had
set some reindeer loose... a lot of reindeer! One of the beast nearly ran
over the Provost.
We all had assembled by the tree, the switch was tapped and the lights came
on. Voliare at that very same moment had taped his PADD again and it started
to fizzle, then it began--it was a full blown blizzard, snow everywhere, the
Cadets were having a blast, they all ended up having a snowball fight and
initiating the new Provost by hitting him with several snowballs. It was a
good evening for all ,except For Cadet's Taran and Voliare they may have to
report to Torah, to explain their actions. The Quiggly brothers managed for
once to stay out of trouble, they were in charge of decorating the Deans
home.
Special note* Welcome to the Academy, Commander Torah! He is our new XO.

Happy Trails:
Another Fine Mess You've Gotten Us Into
J/L Cadet Solvek Taran and Cadet Andrew Voliare
Taran wakes up early it is a Sunday morning and very, very cold.... He
rushes to take a shower, knowing he must not be late to the new XO's office
he was to report to him for his punishment in his part of the blizzard making
mess that had happened at the tree lighting ceremony a few nights
previous. He knew what him and his friends done wasn't really the right thing
to do but it sure was fun ... at the time. Taran was young and had always
been a bit out of the ordinary for a Vulcan, but he was very intelligent and
he knew that this punishment was of his own doing and he do what is right.
He finishes dressing and grabs his gloves and jacket and heads down the
hall and out of the dorm building trying not to slip again on the ice, he
makes his way across the campus and arrives ten minutes early he walks into
the lobby area of the Provost's office and waits until he arrives. After a
few moments of looking through some magazines he looks up and sees the
Provost starring at him. Solvek quickly stands at attention, glancing up to
meet
with the tall Klingons eyes who is staring right back at him with no show of
emotion what so ever. Just then as usual, Andy runs in half out of breath,
and runs into the back of Commander Torah. Solvek still standing at attention
looks at Andy and whispers , "You're late Dude, we are in so much trouble The
XO stares at Andy for a moment then motions for both Cadets to enter his
office. Solvek and Andrew stand at attention in front of the Provosts
desk.
"Cadets your punishment for that little stunt you pulled is outside
behind the building. Dismissed."
Andrew looks over at Solvek. "Sir?"
"I said dismissed Cadets!"
"Aye Sir!" Both of them shout as they quickly leave the Provosts
office.
Once outside Andy slows and looks at Solvek. "Well, that wasn't to
bad. See he is a nice guy."
"Oh you really think so? Here." Solvek hands Andy a piece of paper.
Taking it Andy looks it over.
"Hmm Sulu House, Recreation area, the Chapel, Dahlgren Hall .. OK I
give up."
"It's a list of things he wants cleared away before lunch time. "
"Really? That's all? Man this will be a breeze!"
"If you had been there on time you would have heard him. But somehow I
don't think it's going to be that easy."
"Solvek my friend, you worry to much. Torah probably has the hover
sleds waiting for us behind the building right now."
"I don't think so, but OK"
Solvek and Andy walk out the back door of the building. But there's
not sled. Just more snow.
"OK where's the hover sled?" Andy asks.
"Umm Andy?"
Andy looks back at Solvek and sees him pointing to the wall were three
shovels are leaning against the wall. "And there's a note." Solvek says as
grabs the note and begins to read it. "It says, 'Cadets Taran, Voliare, and
Andronicus, these shovels ere used in ancient days to clear snow from
walkways. Ice was also removed by spreading salt on the surfaces and meting
the snow. These two items will allow you to make the campus safer.' Still
sound easy?"

Strange Days
By: CadtSolvekTaran SDate:001231
It was the dawn of a new year for humans on Earth, many people were busy
early in the day scurrying about preparing for parties and social
gatherings.Vulcans have a similar type of new year celebration, but is was a
few months back, since the Vulcan calendar year is shorter than that of
Earth. Cadets Taran and Voliare were not among those who were celebrating
tonight. They of course were still very much in trouble with the Dean and the
Provost and
carrying out the punishment that they both received.
~~ Security Watch
~~
"Well, nothing like a quiet night on campus." States Solvek to himself.
Solvek began his rounds checking the Delta secotor again, making sure all
facility doors were secure. Solvek knew that if another alarm went off and
the Dean had to be called it wouldn't be a good thing for him. Since the two
ramped squirrels from three nights ago had managed to elude them and was
still on the loose. Just then he got a call from central security that he was
needed on a 2-23 call to the dorms. That was a call for help.
Solvek picked up the pace and headed over to the dorm building and arriving
at the Cadets door he taped the chime not sure of what was behind the door.
There was no answer at first. He taped the chime again, just then a young
woman answered she was shaking and screaming hysterically and only wear a
towel. Solvek stood there staring at her for only a moment and then snapped
back to reality and remembered why he was called there.
~~~~~~These are the events that took place
next~~~~~~
Solvek sits back in the chair and taps the PADD to start recording his
report. He pauses a moment, taps the PADD.
"OK, How am I going to do this report and if I do this report will anyone
even believe the events happened, or will the Dean and Torah think I have
gone completely mad or worse? Will they think I have been drinking while on
duty? either way, what ever the out come, I have to do the report." He states
outloud to himself.
He taps the PADD again and begins recording.
"When I arrived the young female was hysterical, I tried to ask her what
the problem was but all the young girl could do was stand behind me and point
to the corner near her bathroom door. I walked over, pulling my weapon from
my side and slowly pushing back the door. Just as I was peeking around the
corner something came flying at my head ... At first I thought I saw a
...well... a squirrel, it was, it was one of the very same ones
from the other night, I knew it was because this one had a white streak on
its back... I seemed to have scared it a bit and it started to run towards
the girl, she screamed again and then the poor squirrel made a sound like it
had screamed back at her. I proceeded to moved closer to it, I had it backed
up into a corner, the squirrel stared me down and I stared back at it, as I
tried to reach out and grab it, it had taken another leap at me knocking
me to the ground he ran around the room a few more times, it was out of
control, I tried to jump on it and missed landing on a chair instead, as I
got up I heard the girl scream again. I looked over and low and behold the
squirrel had ran up the front of her leg,
around her shoulder and down her back side and out the door ... the girl was
mortified, but unhurt. I called a medical team to her room and put security
on alert to watch out for the peeping Squirrel ."
Solvek sits back shaking his head, " My goodness, why on my watches does all
the crazy things happen to me. " He looks at the chrono and back up and sees
his relief walk in.
"How is it going Taran? "
" Hello Lux, well it was sort of a good night, I didn't have break up many
parties on campus, but I did put out a warning to be on the look out for a
ramped squirrel "He taps the console to log out for the night and gives Lux
sort of a grin.
"You... had to do... what? " Lux asked looking kinda puzzled.
"Just read the evenings reports you will see what I mean. Have good night
Cadet."
"OK, I will read it. Sleep well, Taran."
Solvek nods and dashes out the door. He makes his way over to his dorm and
spots Andy crossing the court yard headed in the same direction, he hurries
to catch up with him to tell him all about his weird evening. Just then out
of the corner of his eye he thought he saw squirrels running towards the
Administration building . As he turned to look ... there was nothing there.
"Man, I really need sleep...I'm starting to see things !" he whispers to
himself.
Lecture Brief
Small Unit Tactics
(Patrols)
0101.01
Discipline: Security
Instructor: Captain Wil Shade, Visiting Faculty, Commanding Officer, USS
Nautilus (in final stages of construction)
The Basics
Introduction:
Welcome to Small Unit Tactics. This month long course is designed to give
you cadets the basic fundamentals that will keep you alive. It doesn't
matter if you are a Security/Tactical major or are studying to be a ship's
cook. Every Starfleet officer needs the information contained in this
course, because on any given day, a tactical situation may be thrust upon
them. When that happens, there will be no time to go "look it
up in the computer". You will have to know what to do and be able to do it
without the slightest hesitation.
We'll begin with the individual basics of learning how to shoot. The
following instructions apply to any individual firearm in the Starfleet
armory, whether it be a hand phaser or rifle. Once you learn these "tools",
you will have them with you for the rest of your life. So pay attention,
schedule some range time, and practice, practice, practice.
The objectives of this lesson are to provide more tools for use in a close
quarter battle. By becoming proficient in the techniques taught in this
lesson plan, shooters will be able to increase their advantages in combat and
increase the probability of remaining alive.
Proper Tactical Shooting Platform:
- Lower body acts as suspension system for the upper
body.
- Keep upper body calm and steady.
- Do not move upper body erratically.
- Stay balanced.
- Move with a loose and balanced smooth shuffle.
- Do not run with a weapon.
- very few times when you would need to run
- running makes you lose control of the shooting
platform
- Bring stock of weapon tight into the shoulder.
- keep weapon pointed slightly downward until
threat appears
- quickly raise weapon to cheek
- get a good sight picture
- Keep finger off the trigger until definate threat
appears.
- prevent accidental discharge of weapon
- not safe to leave finger on trigger
- no tactical advantage to keeping finger on
trigger
- Learn to develop a good shooting platform for weak
side
and strong side.
- Practice daily until proper shooting platform becomes
automatic.
Cornering Techniques:
- control of the corners in a building, room, or compound
is essential for
successful close quarter tactical operations
- the physics, geometry, dynamics, and timing of cornering
must be
mastered
- shooters must learn to fire their weapon accurately and
confidently
from either side of their body.
- a trained shooter must not have a "strong-hand" or
"weak-hand", but
be completely and equally proficient with either.
- if a shooter does not learn how to switch hands, that
shooter will
end up exposing half of their body to their opponent,
significantly
reducing the shooter's odds of survival.
Cover and Barricades:
- used correctly, cover and barricades are additional
tools a shooter can
use to increase the odds of winning the engagement.
- keep the correct shooting platorm while using cover and
barricades.
- stay far enough away from barricade to use weapon and
observe.
- go towards the threat, keep pressure on threat, and
force threat to
make mistakes.
Selecting and Using Cover:
This article is intended for anyone who may encounter direct phaser
fire. No matter what your role on an Away Team might be, the ability to
rapidly and correctly assume cover is a skill that all of us should be ready
to apply at any time. The purpose here is to familiarize you with selecting
cover, and using it, with or without a phaser.
A simple definition of cover would be, any material barrier that
you would expect to provide protection from weapons fire. However, this is
anything but simple. Three problems may face you when you have to take
cover.
1). You may not have much time or choice when selecting a suitable
object or barrier.
2). You may not be able to readily move to a position of better
cover, or have an avenue of escape.
3). You may not be able to make an exact determination of what
will be suitable cover for the weapon you may be facing. You can never
really know exactly what your opponent will be utilizing, or what setting he
will use.
All three of the above reasons lead to the conclusion that you
should train for the worst plausible scenario. By this I mean you should
familiarize yourself with what phaser-type weapons will do against various
materials, and how long it will take to do it. For instance, even at its
highest setting, a phaser will take several seconds to vaporize certain
materials. A phaser blast of that long a duration would expose the shooter
for
an inordinate length of time. It is not likely that a skilled adversary
would take that much time, at least right away. It is much more likely that
your adversary will use a high "kill" setting. Even at the higher "kill"
settings, there are plenty of materials and barriers which will provide
sufficient cover.
However, there are several things to keep in mind about selecting
and effectively using cover.
Be aware of your surroundings. When you suspect danger is
imminent, start picking out potential sites of cover. Look for an escape
route, as well.
Take cover before issuing a challenge. Whether on a planet's
surface, or confronting an intruder on board ship, this will keep you alive
longer.
Start looking for alternate cover immediately. Any cover is only
good for a short period of time. Always be looking for other places to go
and the safest route to get there.
Be aware of your body profile. Most common giveaways are feet,
knees, buttocks, elbows, shoulders, hands, and in certain cases, tails.
Always look from the side of cover, never over the top. Depending
on your species, several centimeters of forehead will be above cover before
your eyes get there.
Don't stick your head out just to look. Remember, if you can see
them, they can see you. Do not be tempted to look out from your protection,
unless you have the means to return fire.
Reload your phaser before you move to alternate cover. It could be
a deadly mistake to have your phaser run out of charges while you're moving
in the open.
Stay aware of your situation. Rely on your problem solving skills,
rather than luck. Avoid being seen, heard, or detected in any other way.
Stay aware of your shadows and reflections, as well.
Never hide in doorways. They are called "Fatal Funnels" for a
reason.
Practice, practice, practice. Practice with a buddy, in a group,
or individually, but practice. Learn how to utilize it to neutralize an
opponent's threat. You can use your own holodeck programs, or ones devised
by the Tactical Department. You can also sign up to take additional training
in this, or any other tactical area.
Lecture Brief
Small Unit Tactics
(Patrols)
0101.01.2
Discipline: Security
Instructor: Captain Wil Shade, Visiting Faculty, Commanding Officer, USS
Nautilus (in final stages of construction)
Patrol Fundamentals
Definition: A patrol is an Away Team which has been sent into an uncertain
or known hostile are. The patrol's mission may be reconnaissance, combat, or
both, and it is tailored to suit that mission.
Types of Patrols:
Combat - Expects to engage an enemy
Recon - Collects information, avoids detection at all costs, fights only
in self-defense
Organization of Patrols: Patrols are organized into elements and teams.
Teams are subdivisions of elements.
Recon and Security Element: Provides early warning en route to/from and
while at the objective. Maintains surveillance. This element will most
always consist of Tactical and Security Officers.
Point Team - (Point Man, Slack Man)
Right Flank - (Flanker, Slot)
Left Flank - (Flanker, Slot)
Rear Guard - (Trailer, Up Man)
Command Element: Provides mission operations, communications,
navigation, command, and control.
Command Team - (Away Team Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol
Leader)
Medical Team - (Medical Officer, Counselor)
Mission Specialists - (Science Officers, Engineering Officers,
etc.)
Point Team: The Point Team is composed of a Point Man and a Slack Man.
Their mission is to provide security for the rest of the Patrol or Away Team.
They do not navigate. The Point Team must not stray too far ahead. The
Patrol Leader (PL) must be able to control their direction and see them at
all times. The Point Team must be alert for booby traps, ambushes, enemy
patrols and positions, innocents,
or anything else out of the ordinary.
The Point Man walks in front, and the Slack Man moves
behind him at about 20 meters depending on terrain, vegetation, and lighting.
The Slack Man must watch the Point Man in his peripheral vision. When the
Point Man looks to the right, the Slack Man "takes up the slack" by looking
to the left. They must work together to provide constant 270 degree
surveillance, and check back to the PL to get guidance and direction. If the
Point Team does not keep an eye on the Patrol Leader, and the patrol stops
for any reason, the Point Team will have broken contact, and somebody is
likely to die.
The Point Team is the Away Team's primary defense
against an ambush. They must be able to spot an ambush before the Away Team
wanders into the kill zone. The Point Team should not be in place for longer
than one hour. Thirty minutes is better. Tired officers have a habit of
looking at the ground in front of them. It is difficult to concentrate for
long periods of time in a high-pressure situation such as Point. If
your patrol is not large enough to rotate the Point, then make damn sure your
Point Team is a good one. Point is not a job for some green security or
tactical officer.
Flank Teams: The job of the right and left Flank Teams is to support the
Point Team and defend the Command Element. The Flanker takes the extreme
flank position while the Slot Man centers himself between the Flanker and the
Command Element and drops about 10 meters toward the rear. There is far less
pressure here than at Point, so these guys can be a little less experienced.
Rear Guard: The Rear Guard consists of the Trailer and the Up Man. The
Trailer is the back door for the Away Team, and is just about as important as
the Point Man. The Up Man performs the same functions as the Slack Man on
the Point Team. These guys should be nearly as good as the Point Team.
Command Element: The Command Element, which is located in the center of the
patrol, is made up of the senior officers and mission specific staff.
ATL (Away Team Leader) - Commander of the Away Team and its mission.
This person is usually the Executive Officer, but can be any Senior Officer
of any department, and will usually depend upon mission type.
PL (Patrol Leader) - Commands the Security and Tactical officers
assigned to the Away Team, and is responsible for its security. The PL is
also responsible for gathering the appropriate intelligence for the area in
which the Away Team is to be inserted. This person is usually the Chief of
Security, but may be the senior Security or Tactical Officer present.
APL (Assistant Patrol Leader) - Backup for the PL and responsible for
the security of the Command Element itself. The APL is also in charge of
weapons and equipment issuance prior to the Away Team's deployment. This
person is usually the Assistant Chief of Security, but may be the next senior
Security or Tactical officer present.
MO (Medical Officer) - Responsible for the treatment of injured Away
Team members or indigenous personnel. This person is the senior Medical
Officer present. *Note* - If there is only one qualified Medical Officer
assigned to the Away Team, there must be either another Away Team member who
holds secondary qualifications in Medical, or a transporter lock must be held
on the Away Team at all times.
SO (Science Officer) - Responsible for the analyzing and resolving any
scientific issues which may face the Away Team. There may be one or more of
these individuals in the Team.
MS (Mission Specialist) - Any person who has been assigned to the Away
Team to carry out its primary objective.
**IMPORTANT** The basic indivisible unit is a 2-man Buddy System. The PL
must make certain that everyone is paired with someone else. This goes for
the Command Element as it does for the Recon & Security Element. NEVER leave
a man alone for any reason! There will be no forgiveness for losing someone
under your command when it could have been avoided.
Immediate Action Drills: As was stated before, the Patrol Leader is
responsible for the safety of the Away Team. That being said, the Patrol
Leader must ensure that his people are trained and ready for any possible
situation which may occur. The Patrol Leader (or more appropriately, the
Chief Security Officer) must ensure that every patrol member has had
extensive training in all possible scenarios to the point where they react to
them
instinctively. There are five major types of encounters for which patrol
personnel must train. All of the below apply in known or suspected hostile
areas.
Spotted by unarmed indigenous personnel: If the Away Team is in an area
known to be hostile, then capture and interrogate. But, this must be done
quickly and quietly. Determine before hand, who will do the interrogating.
Verify the information. If you cannot verify it, consider that information
tainted. If you suspect the person to be deliberately misinforming you, have
the ship beam him to a holding cell in the brig. If
transporters are non-operational, gag him, tie him up, and force him to go
with you. Rehearse every single action, again and again.
Spotted by an armed soldier who doesn't shoot: Stun him. Don't waste time
because the guy is an idiot. Stun him. Now, what do you do? Did anyone
hear or see the phaser blast? Know! He will certainly be missed! Do
anything you have to keep him from being discovered. Beam him to sick bay,
or hide him somewhere. Either way, rehearse it!
Spotted by armed soldiers who are smart enough to shoot: The Point Team
should immediately drop and return phaser fire. The Point Man fires an
entire charge on full-auto and tosses a photon grenade. If possible, the
Slack Man should lay down a base of suppressive fire, while the Point Man
runs or crawls back to the patrol. The patrol fires to cover the Slack Man's
escape. Move one man at a time back to the rear of the patrol until
you have broken contact with the opposition. Then everyone run like hell to
the last rally point.
Rally point - Along the patrol's route you must select rally points. Choose
a prominent land feature and declare it as a rally point. Make sure the
Point Team gets the word. If you have to run, the rendezvous point is always
the last rally point.
Far Ambush: Phaser fire opens up on you 600 meters away, and transporters
are down (they always seem to be down when you really need them, don't they?)
The PL yells, "9 o'clock! 300 Meters!" Or something similar. This order
tells the patrol to run in the 9 o'clock direction for 300 meters and
regroup. If they get separated, they return to the last rally point. Again,
rehearse this until it is second nature!
Near Ambush: If you are suddenly ambushed, there are only two things you can
do, Emergency Beam-out (but, of course the transporters will be down), or
assault their position. Forget about hiding. If they were good enough to
ambush you, they were good enough to booby-trap all the points of cover. If
you run, you'll be shot. Your only hope is to attack the enemy with
everything you've got! You will not get a second chance. If
you have to, swing your phaser rifle like a club. Anyone who is not in the
kill zone must flank the enemy position and attack immediately.
Basically, if you get caught in a near ambush, you are DEAD MEAT! The best
defense for the situation is this, "DON'T GET YOUR ASS AMBUSHED!" However,
you must rehearse this scenario in the event each man in the patrol wins the
lottery all at the same time and you get out alive.
Patrol Base: A patrol base is any place you intend to occupy for more than a
couple of hours. Face it. This isn't a holo-movie. We just don't beam onto
a planet and beam right back in ten or fifteen minutes. Most Away Team
missions take several days to complete, and longer if the Team is in a
hazardous area. At the very least, you should plan for a Patrol Base as a
backup to the ever present danger of the transporters being
offline.
Establishing the Base:
1). Create a defensive perimeter. Like I said, this ain't a
holo-movie. Even in an area "known" to be safe, the unexpected can, and
usually does, happen. Be ready!
2). Just like during the patrol, make sure everyone knows what
reference point "twelve o'clock" is. The PL (Patrol Leader) designates the
Rally Points, and there should be at least two, three if possible. For
example, "Rally Point One is 300 at two o'clock. Rally Point Two is 600 at
three o'clock." This means that the first rally point is three hundred
meters in the two o'clock direction, and the alternate is six hundred meters
in the three
o'clock direction. Remember, a rally point is a place to run to if you have
to vamoose quick.
3). Set booby-traps or trip wires in dead space areas. Dead space is
any place you cannot shoot into from the patrol base, usually a depression in
the ground where a person could hide.
4). Make sure everyone gets something to eat! You might think that
this should be an "automatic". But, like everything else on a patrol, leave
nothing to chance. You wouldn't believe the number of idiots who have "fallen
out" during an Away Team mission due to lack of nutrition. The PL should
take proactive measures and plan all the meals that the Away Team will need
for the duration of the mission, plus three days extra. The PL
should consult with the Medical Department for nutritional recommendations.
5). Water is also something cherry Away Teamers take for granted. Make
sure they get it, and drink it. A dehydrated Teamer is a hindrance to the
entire mission.
6). Sleep. Make sure everyone gets equal amounts of sleep time. And,
NO, sex does not count as sleep time!
7). Last but not least, make sure everybody changes their socks! Even
in this age of enlightened technology, there is no substitute for clean
socks! You cannot afford to be slowed down by foot fungus of any sort.
Change your socks!
All of the above concepts need to be drilled into your head so that
you can react instantly in a pressure cooker environment, and keep yourself,
the patrol, and the Away Team alive.
