How many licks does it take...
...to get to the center of a Targ?
duty log, Cmdre. Trinity da Vinci
SD60004.05
"AH-ONE, AH-TWO, AH-THREE.... CRUNCH...."
Commodore Trinity turned her head to hide the wince as the Betaran across
from her lustily made its way through a steamed King Crab.... shell and all.
It reminded her a little too closely of the poor Targ who'd been a
mid-afternoon snack for the Antedan, Muktana, who had been "under the
influence" of a virus and out of his mind.
The Klingon to her right, Vu'Tahr, growled under his breath and grabbed his
wine glass, gulping back half the contents in a single chug. The big Klingon
was still very angry at Muktana, but Trinity had managed to convince him (for
now) that he could not ritually disembowel Muktana.... at least not on
campus.
She sighed under her breath, and then attacked her own King Crab with as
much relish as the Betaran -- but with far more finesse. Even with the Targ
incident, she was very proud of how the cadets had performed under the
pressures of the diplomatic summit. She was sure that there would be no
complaints about their performances.
Keeping an eye out for Vu'Tahr, she dug into dinner again, and dealt with
any cultural "incidents" that might come up.... hopefully not including any
more Targs as mid-afternoon snacks!

"Jeepers, It's the Creepers" - part 2
Background reading: Please be sure to have read Cdr Sorik's log, "Be Very,
Very Quiet".
Recap from last week (well, 2 weeks ago. ::kicks AOL::): A rash of odd items
have been happening on campus as of late. There has been an increase in the
number of missing items across campus. The odd thing is that none of the
items seem to have any kind of relation to one another. The increase has been
very gradual; value of items range from worthless to
priceless sentimental items. There have been no obvious rifling of items or
ransacking of rooms. Many people reporting missing items have chalked the
loss up to their own absentmindedness, but the increase in reports without
any clear reason or any obvious trail of clues has the Security department at
a loss. (Even Mannix has shut up, because he is missing one of his treasured
award medallians, and doesn't want to piss off Security for fear of not
getting it back ;).
A few of the more observant people on campus have noticed things like
personal items moved slightly off from where they should be, but the
phenomenom is usually shrugged off and attributed to roommates, friends or
their own forgetfulness.
New information: Classes for the next half of the term are due to begin in
two days. The problem can no longer be ignored; it must be solved before
classes begin again. To this end, students will be sent out in groups to see
if they can discover the source of the problems, or the theif's cache.
Trust no one. :)
TEAMS/COLORS/SYMBOLS WILL BE ASSIGNED AT SIM. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO ARRIVE AT
SIM *BEFORE* 10PM Eastern SO WE MAY BEGIN ON TIME. THANK YOU!

Crys waded through the boxes in her dorm room, searching for a certain pair
of pants. "I know it's here somewhere . . . " She came across a shirt, and
smirked. "Computer, begin duty log for Cadet Nicole Jacobs, current
stardate."
"Log opened," the computer responded.
She held up the shirt, shaking out the dust it had acquired in the cave.
"Today I joined Commodore Trinity and a few of the other cadets on a search
for a bunch of missing items. Apparently, there has been a series of thefts
going on around campus, and none of the items seemed to be connected in any
way -- and some had just been presumed misplaced." She folded up the shirt,
smoothing out the
wrinkles, and stuck it in a dressor drawer.
"Our tricorders were calibrated to detect berbitral, a rare element in some
sort of rock that was stolen. We spread out and scanned for it, and finally
found a lead. We had to go down into the underground ruins of the Presidio.
It was actually kind of creepy." She shivered a bit, remembering.
"We eventually found the rock . . . along with a huge stash of all the other
items that had been stolen. We took an inventory of the items, and Commander
Sorik and his team managed to catch the perpetrators. While we were doing
the inventory, we found some pretty odd stuff . . . I even came across a
shirt of mine that had been taken, which I hadn't even noticed was missing."
Crys gazed around at the
boxes scattered everywhere. "I suppose that's not hard around here, though.
I really do have to get around to unpacking the rest of this stuff one of
these days."
She sighed and headed for the nearest open box. "I guess now is as good a
time as any. Computer, end log."
"Log closed."

Final exams are only a few weeks away, and with that, a brief break before
the start of the summer training cruise.
Under the direction of a new program proposed by Commodore Trinity, there has
been a select group of students who will be engaging in a new study program
which includes summer training cruises as early as the completion of freshman
year. Dorms One, Two and Seven have been selected to participate in this
summer's program. It is hoped that more training in a real-life situation at
an earlier tenure in the students' careers will help them grow faster
and better in their Starfleet Careers.
The Academy has been granted use of the USS Kilimanjaro as a permanent
training vessel. This vessel, NCC-27470, was recently retired from active
duty after 15 years. It has been completely overhauled and undergone a
thorough refitting, bringing all weapons and shielding requirements
completely up-to-date.
As this week's sim opens, we will be aboard the Kilimanjaro, preparing to
take a brief jog around the nearby friendly sectors to give you all a feel
for the ship. While active-duty officers will be at station and in charge of
their departments (IE - CEO, CMO, etc), please feel free to play NPCs, the
ship will be at the mercy of the students' able hands. (and may whatever gods

View From On High
Duty log, Cmdre da Vinci
THERE WAS A PARTICULARLY POIGNANT BEAUTY about being in space, Trinity da
Vinci reflected as she stood before the giant panes of transparent aluminum
that separated her from the yawning vacuum of space mere inches away.
A few hundred years ago, a mere blip on the cosmic timeline, man had to
satisfy himself with looking up at the stars, his heart full of yearning,
being able to do little more than imagine what life was up here. And now,
well ...
Earth turned lazily beneath McKinley Station, and beyond it hung the moon, a
heavy waning crescent. The sun was a bright smudge on the far side of her
view. Blips of light, shuttles and freighters, moved silently among the
planetary bodies, conducting their everyday business. Rich and heavy beyond
all this was the great glittering band that was the Milky Way, viewed from
within.
Sure, Sector 001 might not have the same dramatic views as say, the
Horsehead Nebula or the intricate Gaseous Plains of Belox, but it was home,
and there was something intense, intangible, about seeing your home planet
turning below you.
The first time she had experienced it, at 16, taking a ride with her older
sister, who had just gotten her intersystem shuttle license at the time, she
knew she would never be the same. You never could be, really, because no
matter how much you thought that the simulators would prepare you for the
moment, it simply couldn''t compare with the sensation that you knew you were
free of Earth's bonds, the marbled globe turning silently below.
There were cadets, Trinity knew, who had never yet been in space. They'd run
the simulators and the holodecks until they could run the shuttles and ships
blindfolded, but the fact was there, that even in this day and age, there
were those who simply never had been in space; who'd never had the fortune to
even make the trip to the Moon.
She smiled to herself in the reflection in the window. Oh, maybe it was her
age creeping up on her, her 41st birthday being mere days away. Maybe she
simply had a little softer heart for these details in life than she admitted
to. Or maybe it was simply the delight of watching somebody looking up from
the controls of a Starfleet vessel as they left spacedock for the first time,
knowing that this was the real McCoy. Since leaving command of the
Miyoko, there had been less and less time to sail through the cosmos, and
secretly in the depths of her heart she knew she had pushed for the Freshman
Training Cruise as much for herself as for the good of Starfleet and of the
cadets.
"To be a cadet again," she murmured softly, and turned on her heel, away
from the view, to return to the inner docking bays, where the Kilimanjaro
awaited.

The Mannix Metric
A Model for Time Travel
Synopsis of the Finals Lecture
(Final Exam to follow)
Mannix Metric: The coordinate system, in which Time is assigned to the
y-axis and Space (all three dimensions) is assigned to the x-axis. Developed
by Dr. Mason Mannix as a model for measurement of Space-time.
Mathematical Model: Time is assigned to the y-axis and space (length, depth,
height) is assigned to the x-axis. Travel at superluminal speeds forces the
time axis and space axis to rotate in towards each other so much so that they
switch places, thereby reversing the order of events and representing travel
backwards in time.
Taking this model one step farther, we let one point on the space
axis remain constant, and change only the time axis ordinate in increasing
values. The result is that as the time values increase to near luminal
speeds, the farther apart the values will appear to be in the positive
quadrant of the metric. However, when superluminal speeds are applied, the
points in time become increasingly negative.
What it all means: Possibilities are what drive research and theory in
temporal physics, and are what led Sir Isaac Newton to offer his mathematical
definition of how motion changes time. Newton proposed that space and time
were absolute. That space was a fixed, infinite, and unmoving reference
against which absolute motions could be measured. He further believed that
the universe was pervaded by a single absolute time that could be
symbolized by an imaginary clock off somewhere in space. However, he was
perplexed by the fact that gravity seemed to operate instantaneously at a
distance, thus distorting the absolute time model he had created.
Enter Albert Einstein who declared that time is simply what a clock
reads. With his Special Theory of Relativity, Einstein showed how time
changes with motion. Later, his General Theory of Relativity changed how we
look at gravity, from that of a simple "force" to the movement of matter
along the shortest space in a curved space-time. Einstein never looked at it
like he was contradicting Newton; rather, he saw it as
extending the possibilities which Newton's theories did not grasp.
Near the end of the twentieth century, Stephen Hawking became the
chief proponent of Quantum Theory and used it to extend the possibilities of
temporal physics beyond even Einstein's Relativity. At almost the same time,
Super String Theory was developed by Edward Whitten. Together, Quantum
Theory and Super String Theory paved the way for understanding temporal
anomalies such as black holes and worm holes.
Those theories paved the way for the eventual development of warp drive and
faster-than-light travel.
The Mannix Metric ties the loose ends of these theories with a
proposal first made by the Ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle. It was
Aristotle who first proposed the concept of dimensions, length, width, and
height. These dimensions are the artificial tools we use, even in the
twenty-fourth century, to understand objects and to discuss the universe in
which we live. However, there was one dimension which Aristotle
left out . . . time.
The Mannix Metric proves the simple truth that time is simply the
fourth dimension, no more, no less. This simple truth opens an incredible
array of possibilities, including navigable time travel. In fact, this
principle is already in everyday use and has been for millennia. When we
make appointments, we designate the place (3-D location) and time (4-D
location). It wouldn't do any good to meet
a friend at a restaurant a day late, would it?
The Mannix Metric simply and accurately illustrates how navigable
time travel will have to be accomplished. Simply stated, we always travel
through space-time. In order to travel only through the time dimension, you
cannot also travel simultaneously through space. In other words, a ship
capable of time travel would have to be held in place at a point in space
while the energy of its engines drove it through
time.
In order to navigate through time, the ship would simply adjust its
speed while being held in place by specially designed brakes, otherwise known
as Temporal Induction Gear. The faster the impulse engines could drive the
ship near the speed of light, the faster it could travel into the future.
Conversely, the faster the warp engines could propel the ship beyond the
speed of light, the faster the ship would
travel into the past.
This theory has already been unknowingly and crudely proven by the
USS Enterprise and the Bounty (the renamed BoP used by Kirk and Co. to return
to Earth after they trashed the original Enterprise). The method of
slingshotting around the sun provided the only brake strong enough to hold a
starship in place while it's engines drove it through time. At some point in
the trajectory around the sun, the gravitational force of the
sun will exactly equal the force of the ship's engines. This point is part
of the calculations Spock used for time travel computation. Now we only need
to develop the technology to equip a starship with a portable braking system
which could be used to propel it through time.
This lecture only addresses the possibilities. The practicalities
of time travel will be discussed next semester.

We received an emergency call from the Freighter Zenok. The ship is minutes
away from a core breach, and we are the closest Starfleet vessel who can
reach the ship in time to rescue at least some, if not all, of the Zenok
crew. Cmdre. Trinity ordered a rendevous with the ship, and as the sim ended,
we were preparing to beam over an away team.
Status on the Zenok:
- Scans show the ship's warp core will go critical in 180 seconds.
- The AT has been granted 120 seconds to see if they can do anything. They
will be beamed directly into the Engineering room and a lock will remain on
them at all times.
- Scans show about 30 lifeforms on board; initial scans indicate some of them
are injured.

2O log USS Kilimanjaro Cadet Blair Reporting
The Distress call we recived turned out to be a trap. Upon arrival at the
scene of the distress call an Away team was transported to see about stoping
the core breach and survivors were transported to sick bay.
Once the away team fwas aboard they were seized by the crew. The six on
board the Kilimanjaro attempted to take control of the ship first taking
control of sick bay then moving to engineering. Once in engineering they
began disrupting ships fuctions. I was able to lock out the computer access
consoles in that section.
Commander Sorik seemed to be having his own problems. At one point all
communication and tracking signles were lost and the away team was lost. When
the signal was reestablished they were in the process of disabeling the enemy
ship. I cannot say what happened during the communications blackout but it
was not good.
While in Engineering the intruders were able to shut down the warp core and
disable a few other systems before that section of the ship was flooded with
Anesthezine. Before the last one passed out, he fired a phaser at most of the
primay systems. He manage to disable Lifesupport on 5 decks and the
transports as well. With the away team still on the other ship steps had to
be taken to pull them back.
I order power fromt he aft shield system diverted to the transporter grid.
The away team was returned safely but at the cost of the power grid on 2
decks i take respocability for that damage.
Once the away team was returned to the 'Jaro a tracking device was attached
tot he hull of the other ship and we were able to back off safely.

Commodore asked for a status report, I said there was nothing
to report, and she just about jumped down my throat. So I explained that,
well, there were some nearby systems, but nothing unusual. She asked for
specifics, so I started listing the specifics about the nearest system.
Actually, that system was quite interesting, from a scientific perspective.
The asteroid belt between the sixth and sev-- er, I'll get to that later."
She cleared her throat, forcing
herself back on track. "So I was telling her about this system, like she
asked, and she interrupted me with a . . . pop quiz." Crys shivered. "I
hate those."
"It took me a while to figure out what she was getting at, even after a
bunch of hints, but eventually I figured out that I was supposed to be
sending data to the helm about nearby systems and stuff." She grinned
sheepishly. "I guess I won't be making that mistake again.
"Oh, and then she announced that Dr. Mannix had posted the grades for the
final. I checked my grade . . . and I have no clue how I did it, but somehow
I managed to get 100%! The only one in the class!" She shook her head.
"Maybe I should focus my studies on physics instead of astrometrics, huh?"
Crys glanced down at the PADD in her hand. "I'd like to make up a report
about this system I was studying from the bridge. I have some theories about
its evolution. I hope I have some free time away from my studies so I can
look at this system more closely." She looked up from the PADD. "Computer,
end log."
"Log closed."

Starfleet Academy Sim Summary
by Commander Sorik
Stardate: 60006.14
After an eventful introductory training cruise aboard the USS Kilmanjaro,
the cadets of Quad 15, Dorm One and Quad 27, Dorm Two were returning to
Earth. After docking the ship at Spacedock One, the cadets were to be
debriefed before being dismissed to pursue their much-deserved rest and
relaxation.
Only a few minutes out of spacedock, sensors detected a randomly appearing
spacial distortion moving through the system. The distortion suddenly
shifted positions and engulfed the ship momentarily during docking
procedures.
Losing communications with Spacedock Operations, Commander Sorik decided to
let the cadets disembark and investigate the situation. They soon discovered
everyone aboard the station, with the exception of one lone cadet, had been
apparently frozen in time.
Determined to solve the mystery, a command post was being set up aboard the
'Jaro to run scans of the area while another group of cadets set out to
explore the station...
Awards: Cadet Alysia Atredes and Commander Sorik both received the Silver
Cluster Medallion for 16 weeks of attendance, and Cadet Ataris received a
promotion to Level 1 Cadet. Congrats to all!

Question 1: What philosopher first proposed the concept of dimensions?
Aristotle. But only because he was born a couple of thousands of years
ahead of you.
Question 2: Who developed Super String Theory? Edward Whitten, but only
cause he was born a few hundred years before you.
Question 3: What is the difference between Einstein's Special Theory of
Relativity and his General Theory of Relativity? Special says time changes
with motion and general says gravity is a simple force to the movement of
matter along the shortest space in a curved space-time. Which you no doubt
would have come up with had he not
been born before you.
Question 4: How would one navigate through time? To travel in time one must
be held in place in normal space. So you would have to create a vessel that
could hold itself in 'space' and gain speed to travel along the y-axis (time)
Question 5: Define the term superluminal. (having had that nasty virus
while you gave this lecture, I seem unable to recall this)
Question 6: What would be the purpose of temporal induction gear? to hold a
vessel in normal space while it travels in time.
Question 7: Who was the leading twentieth century proponent of Quantum
Theory?
Stephen Hawking. The actor Ethan's older brother.
Question 8: Explain the "slingshotting" technique of time travel. The
gravity of the sun being orbited around matches the force of the ships
engines, there by holding it in space while it moved through time.
Question 9: How does the Mannix Metric illustrate the relationship between
space and time? Which axis represents which? Y-axis is Time and X-axis is
space.
Question 10: Give a mathematical representation of the Mannix Metric.
Movement-Gravity =0=movement in 4D=Timetravel
Question 11 (Extra credit): Suggest a current ship design (in service, or
in development) that could serve as a platform for a time ship and explain
your choice.
I would go with the Steamrunner class. It has a powerfull engine and
manuverability ratio. It isn't too large a vessel as to cause problems when
it travels through time. Plus it's got large quarters and has generally one
of the better equiped lounges of any current Starship.

Level 1 Command and Science Trainee
Onboard the USS Kilimanjaro
Hatch turned around to Cadet Blair and nodded to him as he left Main
Engineering. He 'power walked' to the turbo lift before someone else called
him back to help out. As he entered the turbolift and rode it to his
temporary quarters on the Excelsior classed Kilimanjaro, he pulled out his
duty padd and quickly began to write.
Interesting time on our first training voyage. As we approached Spacedock
One, we incountered some sort of energy distortion. It just appeared near us
and quickly enveloped the ship. There was no immediate signs of damage so we
procieded the automatic dock with the station. When station controls failed
to respond and the docking arm failed to
open, it was then we knew something was up.
Everybody on the station, except for some of our Cadets waiting for us were
frozen in time. Cadet Blair and myself were sent to Main Engineering to use
the main computer there to figure out what went wrong and how to correct it.
Scans indicated that I came up with a simple theory that the distortion was
like a floating opening in time. All we had to do was 'back up' through it
and we would appear where we belonged. We took the new Cadets that
must have flown their shuttle through it when they arrived back with us.
Hopefully we do not experience any side effects from our trip through quantum
space. Maybe I can talk to Dr Mannix about this and get some extra credit
for coming up with the proper solution.

SUMMARY
The cadets assigned to the Kilimanjaro were returning to Earth from their
brief but eventful introductory training cruise. Upon arriving at Spacedock
One, the Kilimanjaro and part of the station were struck by a spacial
distortion that was randomly moving across the Sol Sector. Communications
with Spacedock One Operations and the 'Jaro were severed, so Commander Sorik
suggested that the cadet crew disembark to the
station to relax before their mandatory debriefing aboard the station.
Upon leaving the 'Jaro, the cadets noticed that everyone aboard the station
seemed to be frozen in time. One cadet, however, seemed unaffected (Dusty
Rivers) and it is assumed that there may be others aboard the station like
him.
Short-range tricorder scans were inconclusive, so three teams will be
divided to assess and hopefully solve the dilemma facing the 'Jaro crew and
those aboard Spacedock One.

Starfleet Academy Sim Summary
Commander Sorik
Stardate: 60006.21
Returning from their introductory training cruise aboard the USS
Kilimanjaro, the cadets were looking forward to their summer vacation when
the ship was suddenly struck by a spatial distortion at they maneuvered into
Spacedock One.
Upon disembarking, the cadets soon found everyone aboard the massive
facility apparently "frozen" in time, with the exception of a few random
cadets who were moving about the station. The SFA cadets then broke up into
groups to solve the mystery and return things to normal.
It was soon discovered that the station's populace wasn't frozen, but it was
the cadets who had been knocked out of time with the rest of the universe --
they were moving at such a high rate of speed, everyone else seemed to be
standing still!
The problem was solved when it was decided to recreate the events that
started it all, and they flew the 'Jaro back through the spatial distortion.
They were all safely returned to the normal time again.
And welcome aboard to all the new cadets who joined us at Spacedock One

The Academy students were visiting Yosemite valley and participating in a
geological dig. Unexpected summer thundershowers created a flash flood in the
side valley the students were working in, and, once the waters had receeded,
some odd artifacts were found embedded in the soils.
One of the pieces looked as if it had been crafted from pyrite ("fool's
gold") and consisted of a multi-projectile shell, which looked like a
softball-sized abstract model of a star. One of the students was playing
around with the artifact, trying to see if it served any purpose, when
suddenly a massive flash erupted.
The time is now 1695 AD.
The students and their instructors believe themselves to be the members of
the local tribe, the Miwok. They are unaware anything has happened to them...
but we must somehow find a way back to the future. No symbols necessary
unless you wander out of the tribal village. (see Miwok shelters for Miwok
housing arrangements).
There will be a couple cadets who realize what has happened ... and they will
have to convince others of what has happened, without altering the fate of
the tribal village at large, or altering local history. Depending on if you
are male or female, you will fufill your traditional tribal duties within the

Hatch sat on the top bunk rubbing his lower back. He reached over and
picked up a slice of a green apple he had laying on a plate near the head of
his bunk. Stretching his arm a little longer then needed to grab the slice,
he yawned a little before he took a bite of the apple slice. Hatch couldn't
get over how tart these human fruits
were; much more so then any fruit he knew of on his homeworld. Slowly
twisting from side to side as he worked the kinks out his back, he reached at
the foot of the bunk and grabbed a handheld data recorder. Quickly polishing
off the last of the sliced apple, he pushed the record button with a sticky
finger and began to speak.
Well, it was another holodeck training exercise here on the Kilimanjaro.
Normally I can say I did an excellent job and showed my ability during these
exercises; however I think I might have 'slipped up' on this one. It all
started out nice and easy. Commander Sorik took some of us cadets on a jog
in lightly forested hill area. I commented how I could power
slide through mud so he added a light rain to the run. It was quite a nice
mile plus jog that got the blood flowing through this cadet. The other
cadets seemed to have made the run okay, with Cadet Mandeville showing he
needed to sleep more and spend some more time in the conditioning room.
After the mile plus run, we came across a large cliff that Sorik told us we
had to climb. I volunteered to look for an easier way to climb up it and I
am glad to say I found one. As Remy argued about how a proper officer would
not get himself stranded on a planet without proper technology, I quickly
climbed up the cliff. Being somewhat of an astute cadet, I placed thick,
greenish sticks into the finger holes that did not offer optimal grip so the
other cadets could hold onto the sticks. After reaching the top, I laid up
there and peaked my head over to see the rest of the class climb up. I
pointed out an observation to Remy about the amount of hair on Sorik's head
and then it just happened. I think Remy lost his footing and grabbed onto me
as the ground slid out from under us all and we both went over. Luckily the
safeties were on and we just bounced off the floor with only minor bruises
and red faces from the ordeal.

STATUS: YELLOW
The USS Kilimanjaro was on peaceful patrol in the Thelevee system when we
discovered a irregular planetoid moving through the system, trailing high
levels of artificial transuranic particles. Additionally, the closer we moved
to the planetoid, even well outside atmospheric range, the concentration of
dust and other space particles has dramatically increased -- not yet enough
to cause damage to the ship, but enough to be cautious
as we move forward.
As the Thelevee system contains a powerful double star system, the planetoid
could potentially be pulled into an odd orbit and/or collide with one of the
several inhabited worlds in the system. Thelevee system contains two worlds
on the cusp of warp capability and three worlds that have highly advanced
technology but are still pre-warp.
Two ATs will investigate the planetoid. We need to determine the planetoid's
origin and what caused it to move from its original position, and we need to
stabilize, if possible, the transuranic emissions. (Dusty, you can quit
snickering already over what you named the particles!! If you think I didn't
notice!! ;)

PLACE: USS Kilimanjaro, somewhere, out there
STATUS: YELLOW
While leaving the Thelevee System, the USS Kilimanjaro received a call for
assistance from a system on the border of Federation space. Being the only
starship in the area, Commodore da Vinci decided to respond.
The call was sent from the Mathar, a humanoid species which resides on the
fifth planet in the system. Claiming to be new to space exploration, the
Mathar have limited means of space travel and are unable to locate an
expensive probe which has disappeared in a nebula located between the orbits
of the fifth and sixth planets.
Long range scans reveal that the sixth planet is also populated, but the
Mathar have claimed it is inhabited by a species of radical isolationists and
the Mathar do not wish to involve them in this matter.
The nebula is classified as an inversion nebula, an interstellar gas cloud
populated by highly unstable strands of plasma. According to the Mathar,
their probe wandered off its course along the perimeter of the nebula two
days ago and is now somewhere in the outer rim where the plasma strands are
less present. Unfortunately, there are gravimetric distortions in this area
of the nebula due to the proximity to the sixth planet.
Commodore da Vinci, hoping to strengthen relations between the Federation
and the Mathar, has agreed to attempt a retrieval of the probe. At the first
sign of danger, however, it is understood that the retrieval efforts will be
aborted to reduce any hazards to the Kilimanjaro crew.
An Away Team will proceed into the nebula aboard a shuttle to locate and
retrieve the probe. Commodore da Vinci has decided to command the shuttle
herself to closely supervise the mission as well as the cadets. Due to the
hazardous conditions within the nebula, the away team will work in coalition
with a science team aboard the 'Jaro for maximum success.
At the start of the sim: The shuttle crew is already aboard the Siene, and

The USS Kilimanjaro, Starfleet Academy's Exclessior-class cadet training
vessel, left the Mathar/Ratham sector and proceeded toward Federation Outpost
Sierra VI for maintenance and supplies. Commodore da Vinci decided to take a
route close to the infamous Romulan Neutral Zone in order to track and study
a rogue comet heading through the zone near the Federation border.
Cadet Christopher Blair, monitoring the comet from the bridge science
station, noted strange readings emanating from the vicinity of the comet. As
the path of the comet took it closer to the Federation border, the readings
became more intense and suspicious. It was soon believed that the emissions
were from a cloaked Romulan vessel trailing the comet and in direct violation
of Treaty.
The 'Jaro then received a hail from Sierra VI about several warbirds
pursuing a Romulan scout ship through the zone and headed for Federation
space. The course of the comet would take it directly into the scout ship's
path. Not wanting to confront the Romulans, Commodore da Vinci relayed their
findings to Sierra VI and proceeded on to the outpost as scheduled.

A Romulan scoutship has been detected in the Neutral Zone by the crew of
Federation outpost Sierra VI. The ship is piloted by Alidar Jarok, who is
defecting to the Federation so that he could warn of what he believes is a
dangerously destabilizing base on planet Nelvana III.
On Stardate 43362.5, the Enterprise-D will enter the Neutral Zone, in
violation of the Treaty of Algeron, to investigate these reports.
LAST WEEK:
The Kilimanjaro was en route to Federation Outpost Sierra VI for maintenance
and supplies. Commodore da Vinci decided to take a route close to the
infamous Romulan Neutral Zone in order to track and study a rogue comet
heading through the area.
Science detected strange emissions from the location around the comet, and
it was soon believed that they were the result of a cloaked Romulan vessel
running along side the comet.
The 'Jaro then received a hail from Outpost Sierra VI that several Romulan
warbirds were detected in the Neutral Zone. They appeared to be following a
Romulan scout ship which was on a direct course with Federation Space...a
course that would take it near the rogue comet and the possibly-cloaked
Romulan ship lying in wait.
However, after considering all the options, Commodore da Vinci decided not
to engage the Romulans and set course for Outpost Sierra VI. The USS
Enterprise-D is en route to the area to investigate the Romulan activity.
At the start of the sim: Although most repairs have been made, the 'Jaro
still needs minor maintenance and supplies and is proceeding to Outpost
Sierra VI, a space station near the Romulan Neutral Zone.
The starship is currently at Yellow Alert due to the Romulan activity across
the border of the zone.
Once docked with the outpost, cadets may disembark for some down-time.

SFA MISSION BRIEFING
PR SECTOR 001
Wednesdays, 10pm EST/9pm CST/8pm RMT/7pm PST

"Do You See What I See?"
Part Three
NOTE: There will be some awards, and maybe even a promo or two, handed out
after the sim, so please email me and let me know if you cannot make it!
Thanks! :)
PLACE: USS Kilimanjaro, near the Romulan Neutral Zone
STATUS: RED
BACKGROUND:
The Neutral Zone has remained uncrossed by either the Romulan Star Empire or
the Federation during an extended period of Romulan isolationism beginning
after the Treaty of Algeron was signed after the Tomed Incident in 2311.
The mysterious destruction of several Federation and Romulan outposts in
2364 triggered the end of this isolationism when a Romulan warbird crossed
the Neutral Zone to investigate. Although the outposts were later found to
have been destroyed by Borg, the incident has now triggered a resumption of
hostilities between the Federation and Romulans.
A Romulan scoutship was detected in the Neutral Zone by the crew of
Federation outpost Sierra VI. The ship was piloted by Alidar Jarok, who wa
defecting to the Federation so that he could warn of what he believes is a

On Stardate 43362.5, the Enterprise-D entered the Neutral Zone, in violation
of the Treaty of Algeron, to investigate these reports.
The USS Kilimanjaro was tracking a rogue comet along the border of the
Neutral Zone when it detected emissions consistent with a cloaked Romulan
ship. Reports from Outpost Sierra VI confirmed the detection of Romulan
activity within the Neutral Zone.
LAST TIME:
The Kilimanjaro docked at Outpost Sierra VI to beam aboard the supplies
necessary for the starship to make its way back to Sector 001. At that time,
a severely damaged Romulan warbird decloacked inside Federation space and its
commander demanded that the supplies be beamed aboard his ship, otherwise he
would destroy the station.
Captain Sorik decided take the Kilimanjaro and lure the Romulans away from
the station. Although itself damaged, the 'Jaro had been able to keep just
ahead of the warbird and its topredo spreads, but the constant bombardment is
slowly taking its toll on the starship and her inexperienced, cadet crew.

Starfleet Academy Sim Summary
by Captain Sorik
Stardate: 60008.30
While attempting to lead the Romulan warbird away from Outpost Sierra
Vi, the Kilimanjaro suffered persistent maintenance issues which forced the
cadets assigned to Engineering into taking drastic steps to ensure the safety
of the ship.
Pushing itself to the limit, the warbird's systems failed and caused massive
internal explosions. With its crew unconscious, there was no way to prevent
their core from going critical. Cadets Blair and de Mandeville accepted
Captain Sorik's mission and beamed aboard the warbird, setting up emergency
transponders and enabling the 'Jaro to beam off the injured Romulan crew.
With some creative patchwork, the 'Jaro cadets repaired a damaged nacelle
allowing the starship to escape the exploding Romulan ship in the nick of
time.
For their bravery, courage and repeatedly going above-and-beyond the call of
duty during their voyage aboard the Kilimanjaro, especially in dealing with
the Romulans, the training mission cadets have all been awarded the precious
Starfleet Academy Medal of Valor.
Cadets Remy de Mandeville and Christopher Michael Blair both received
the Starfleet Academy Distinguished Service Medal. Cadet Blair also received
the Starfleet Academy Command & Duty Fulfillment Recognition Award for his
duties as Acting 20/X0 of the 'Jaro.
Cadet Eryn Chase was promoted to Level One Cadet, and although he is leaving
the Academy Cadet Teg was awarded both the Starfleet Academy Distinguished
Service Medal and the Starfleet Academy Command & Duty Fulfillment
Recognition Award.
Congratulations to all!

SFA MISSION BRIEFING
"City of Kings"
PLACE: Earth, Sector 001
BACKGROUND: After their debriefing aboard Spacedock One, the training cruise
cadets have finally returned to Starfleet Academy on Earth. They have now
had a few days to rest and relax before the new semester begins.
As a sign of appreciation for their bravery during the "Sierra Romulan
Incident," Starfleet Command and Starfleet Academy have offered the training
cruise cadets a special day of R&R in London.
Some of the many activities from which cadets can choose to take advantage
of while in London are: a special tour of the Starfleet ISS Development
Laboratories, a special tour of Buckingham Palace, and reserved tables near
the stage at the infamous Restaurant at the Ritz.
Of course there are many of things to see and do in London, so the cadets
may opt to explore the city on their own, if they wish.
Cadets will utilize the Campus Transporter Station to leave and return to
the campus. Once there, they can travel the city by foot or make use of the
Maglev Train Service which intersects the city.
LONDON: Located on the island of England, just across a short strip of ocean
known as the English Channel from France. London has historically been just
as great a commercial, cultural and industrial hub as its French neighbor.
Today its importance lies in its roles as a cultural center and home to many
advanced industries.
THINGS TO SEE AND DO: Cadets may take part in the tours, or explore the city
on their own.
Starfleet ISS Development Laboratories
Cadets concentrating in engineering or science might intern at Starfleet's
Internal Ship Systems ("ISS") Development Laboratories, located on the
outskirts of London. Here Starfleet conducts advanced research on internal
ship systems, such as transporters, communications and even turbolifts. The
"Labs" (as London's Starfleet officer community calls them) are especially
noted for their work on transporter system; the ISS labs recently became
famous for Dr. Ruthen Coranus' invention of the Federation's interdimensional
transporter technology.
Buckingham Palace
Once the official residence of Great Britain's royal family, today the
palace serves as a public museum. (The royal family, still serving
ceremonial roles, moved to more modest lodgings in 2089.) Attractions
include the Throne Room, Music Room, State Dining Room, and many beautiful
apartments displaying an impressive gallery of art and antiques. The palace
stands on roughly 40 acres of garden. Be sure to visit during the Changing
of the
Guard, an impressive display of pageantry and history, which still takes
place every day at 11:30 hours.
The Restaurant at the Ritz
Located on the ground floor of one of London's oldest and most prestigious
hotels, this restaurant specializes in contemporary English cuisine, as well
as favorites from across the Federation. Live entertainment and dancing
during the evenings. Proper dress is required. Open daily 7:00-00:00 hours.
The Lion & Dove Tavern
Located on a side street not far from the House of Parliament (former seat
of the legislature of Great Britain, now a museum), this pub has been a
gathering place for London's Starfleet officer cummunity for many years.
Unlike many taverns it is not old; it was founded by an early Starfleet
veteran, Commodore Albert Longley (his children's children now operate the
establishment). It brews its own beer and ale, and these fine drinks keep
people
coming in year after year. Starfleet officers posted in London swear that
"L&D ale" is as good as any drinki ever smuggled over the Neutral Zone from
Romulus.
Hyde Park
Like most other large metropolitan areas on Earth, London has several parks.
The largest of these parks is Hyde Park, an excellent place to visit if the
city's surroundings leave you longing for a touch of nature. You can picnic,
ride horses and even play traditional British sports such as rugby and
cricket.
AT THE START OF THE SIM: Cadets are just materializing in London's busy
Transporter Terminal to begin their day in London. There are no assignments
so cadets may break up into groups of their choosing, or explore the city on
their own. However, cadets are expected back on campus for curfew no later
than 23:00 hours.
LONDON CADETS - no color, and any color
NOTE: If any cadets form a group to explore the city, please use the same
color so we'll know who is with who! Many thanks!

SFA Sim Summary
by Captain Sorik
Stardate: 60009.06
To show their gratitude, Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Command gave
the cadets of the recent Kilimanjaro training cruise a day in the city of
London! Cadets had the options of attending tours of various facilities and
museums, utilizing reserved tables at a few prestigious restaurants, or
simply spending the day as they saw fit.
Captain Sorik and Cadet Chris Blair attended the tour at the Starfleet
Internal Ship Systems Laboratories (ISS Labs) only to be caught in the
aftermath of a failed test on an experimental power conduit. The
electromagnetic pulse released from the explosions swept across London like
an earthquake, rocking buildings and ground transport systems and knocking
the power out across town.
Cadet Zack Callahan, located nearest to the ISS Labs, assisted Blair and
Sorik with the rescue efforts at the ISS Labs. Cadets located across town
had other...things...to keep them occupied. ;)

SFA MISSION BRIEFING
PR SECTOR 001
Wednesdays, 10pm EST/9pm CST/8pm RMT/7pm PST
SEPTEMBER 13, 2000
"Where on the Campus is Captain Sorik?"
Round Two
PLACE: Starfleet Academy, San Francisco, Earth, Sol System
STATUS: GREEN
LESSON: Starfleet Skills II - Search and Subdue Field Mission
Background:
At the start of last semester, as an exercise for their "Starfleet Skills I"
requirements, students engaged in a hunt across campus for Commander Sorik.
Sorik was attempting to break into the campus mainframe and steal
information, while the cadets were attempting to locate and stop him before
that could happen.
There were several purposes for this exercise.
One was to encourage interaction among cadets--a fact of life within
Starfleet, as you will not always work with the same people on every mission,
so cadets were randomly distributed into teams.
The other was to help cadets tune their reasoning and deduction skills, both
of which are necessary to solving problems and emergencies that might arise
during space exploration.
At the start of the sim:
Students are already assembled in the Drovan Kol Building in Jupiter Lecture
Hall. Captain Sorik will provide a briefing via a holographic simulation,
then students will have 40 minutes to track down the captain and capture him.
In the meantime, Captain Sorik will be attempting to break into the campus
mainframe and copy strategic information about Starfleet.
Each team will have a team leader, but all team members are encouraged to
suggest a course of action. Team leaders should consider all suggestions
before deciding on a course of action. It is not discouraged to combine
teams to expand the chances of success!
Each cadet has been issued a general Starfleet tricorder but no other
equipment will be distributed; however, this exercise encourages creativity,
so make use of any and all instruments and materials on campus (but please
don't ask those not involved in the exercise for help! ie - you can't enlist
the aid of the security force!). ;)
To note, Captain Sorik will not be wearing a combadge.
Good luck!

Sim Summary
by Captain Sorik
Stardate: 60009.13
Similar to the start of last semester, Captain Sorik had the cadets engage
in a Search and Subdue mission to test, among other things, their detection
and reasoning skills. Like that last time, the cadets would quickly learn
that things are not always as they seem!
Sorik again played the part of an intruder and, using Dr. Mannix's access
codes, attempted to break into the mainframe to steal classified files before
the students could locate and capture him. Once again, Sorik employed the
use of holograms and false sensor readings as decoys, but the cadets were
soon able to track the Vulcan down to a holodeck in James T. Kirk Hall.
The cadets bypassed Sorik's decoys and security measures one by one and
eventually gained access to his location. By working together, and with a
little unexpected help from Dr. Mannix, the cadets successfully captured
Captain Sorik before he could fully access the mainframe computer.

SFA MISSION BRIEFING
SEPTEMBER 20, 2000
"The Best Defense"
Note: Please take a look over all the background info provided in this
brief...
it might come in handy. ;)
PLACE: Near the Mars Defense Perimeter, en route to Phobos, Mars, Sol Sector
STATUS: GREEN
LESSON: Starfleet Skills II - Low-Gravity & Extravehicular Operations
Apology:
Sorry I am so late in getting this brief out to you! It's been a busy week!
Mission:
Starfleet Academy maintains a training center on one of Mars' two moons,
Phobos, to train cadets in low-gravity and extravehicular operations.
Several quads of cadets have been temporarily assigned to the Phobos campus
for training. Phobos is a small, irregular Class D planetoid, only about 30
kilometers in diameter.
The Phobos campus provides living quarters for staff and faculty on duty
there, as well as for cadets on extended training missions, so the cadets
will be assigned new quarters upon arrival.
Cadets are recommended to pack lightly--they should bring standard cadet
uniforms, training uniforms and any necessary personal items (toiletries,
relative school materials, etc.). All other materials and gear necessary for
the training mission (i.e. - environmental suits, low-gravity equipment,
PADDs, etc.) will be supplied upon arrival at Phobos.
The facility, which consists of a series of pressure domes connected by
tunnels, does not contain docking facilities for starships but does maintain
a hangar bay for shuttlecraft and several transporter stations (both
personnel and cargo). Cadets often arrive at the station aboard shuttlecraft
so they can appreciate the surface of Phobos from a distance; they're likely
to see a lot of it during their training.
Currently:
Quads 5, 12, 15, 22, 25, 27, 33 and 42 have been assigned to Phobos for
training. On Stardate 60009.20, Quads 5, 15 and 27 will depart from Earth
for Phobos via shuttlecraft at varying times throughout the day.
The predesignated flightplan will take the cadets from Earth traveling at
one-half impulse out toward the perimeter of the Asteroid Belt, which lies
between Mars and Jupiter. They will adjust course to follow the Belt around
into Mars orbit, at which time Utopia Planetia Orbital Control will clear the
shuttlecraft for approach through the area to Phobos, where Phobos Operations
will direct final approach.
Asteroid Belt Background:
Between Jupiter and Mars stretches a wide belt of asteroids that marks the
edge of the Mars Defense Perimeter and the boundary of the inner reaches of
the Sol system. Many of the asteroids in the Belt are dozens or even
hundreds of kilometers in diameter.
The asteroid field stretches between 1.7 and 4.0 AU and is largely
uninhabited. The unusual rock formations of C-, M- and S-type asteroids, and
the impressive collisions between asteroids, are a popular attraction.
Starfleet uses the field as a place for testing starship weapon systems.
The boundaries of the weapons range are indicated by automated marker buoys,
which warn off other vessels.
Starfleet also conducts regular training courses in asteroid field
navigation and weapon control systems here, and cadets can eventually expect
to spend some time in the Asteroid Belt.
The Mars Defense Perimeter
Just beyond Mars' orbit, Starfleet has established a defense perimeter
to protect the inner planets of the Sol system--particularly Earth and
Mars--from incursion. The defense perimeter consists of unmanned automated
weapon pods, capable of tracking and destroying hostile vessels that managed
to bypass facilities such as Pluto Station the Jupiter Outposts.
The automated pods are deployed in a pattern just outside the Asteroid Belt.
The pods are programmed to explode if any vessel comes into contact with them
without transmitting the proper coded signals. A weapon pod explodes with
the force of several photon torpedoes, sufficient to damage most vessels
seriously. The weapon pods are also armed with high-energy,
variable-frequency phaser beams.
Starfleet vessels regularly patrol the Mars Defense Perimeter in order
to maintain the weapon pods, checking for any damage to their systems.
Currently, the USS Evansville, an Ambassador-Class starship, is patrolling
the area.
Starfleet cadets may eventually be assigned to accompany a Defense
Perimeter patrol in order to study the design and maintenance of the weapon
pods.
At the start of the sim:
Dorm One of Quad 15, as well as Dorms One and Two of Quad 27, are currently
en route to Phobos along the predesignated flight plan (see above) and should
be within visual range of the Asteroid Belt within a few minutes.
To Note: There are a total of five Type-6 shuttlecraft in this convoy to
Phobos. The first shuttle is carrying Captain Sorik and other faculty, the
next three are carrying cadets, and the last shuttle is transporting cargo
and supplies.

Starfleet Academy Sim Summary
Captain Sorik
Stardate: 60009.20
Many cadets have been transferred to the Starfleet low-gravity and
extravehicular training campus on the Mars moon of Phobos. While en route,
the shuttle convoy detected an explosion from the Asteroid Belt and picked up
a distress call from the USS Evansville, the starship assigned to patrol the
Mars Defense Perimeter and run diagnostics on the automated weapon pod
systems in the area.
As Cpt. Sorik's shuttle went into the Belt to investigate, several
malfunctioning weapon pods attacked the shuttle convoy. The weapon pods are
armed with multiple-frequency phaser banks and are programmed to ram and
explode if nearby starships do not transmit the proper deactivation codes.
The pods were intent on destroying the shuttles.
Thanks to the creative thinking of the cadets aboard the Shuttlecraft Tyne,
they were able to destroy the attacking pods and rescue the cadets from
aboard the Shuttlecraft Mekong just before its destruction.
The cadets then set course for Jupiter Outpost 92 to deliver the wounded and
make repairs on the shuttlecraft while other Starfleet vessels arrived on
seen to collect escape pods from the Evansville.

"A Stickney Situation"
Note: Please take a look over all the background info provided in this brief.
PLACE: Starfleet's Phobos Academy, Phobos, Sol Sector
STATUS: GREEN
LESSON: Starfleet Skills II - Low-Gravity & Extravehicular Operations
Mission:
Starfleet Academy maintains a training center on one of Mars' two moons,
Phobos, to train cadets in low-gravity and extravehicular operations.
Several quads of cadets have been temporarily assigned to the Phobos campus
for training.
Phobos and Stickney Academy Background:
Phobos is a small, irregular, Class D planetoid, only about 30 kilometers in
diameter. A large crater--Stickney--running nearly half the moon's length,
mars its surface. Stickney Crater hosts the Academy's Phobos Campus, also
known as Stickney Campus.
The campus consists of a series of pressure domes connected by tunnels, all
made of tinted transparent aluminum specially shielded against solar
radiation, affording a clear view of the crater's surface outside. Each dome
has variable artificial gravity, allowing cadets to study in a variety of
gravitational conditions.
The Phobos campus primarily allows cadets to train in microgravity and
low-gravity environments. Although Starfleet vessels are equipped with
artificial gravity generators, personnel are expected to be able to operate
under variable gravity conditions.
Cadets train to use pressure and environmental suits in different settings,
both inside and outside the campus facilities. Part of the environmental
suit training consists of hiking across the entire diameter of Stickney
Crater.
Cadets also train in extravehicular activity at the Phobos campus: learning
to use magnetic grapplers to walk along the exterior of a ship or station's
hull; using thruster packs to maneuver in microgravity environments;
manipulating equipment and tools inside an environmental suit; and other
related skills.
The Phobos campus provides living quarters for staff and faculty on duty
there, as well as for cadets on extended training missions. The campus does
not contain docking facilities for starships but does maintain a hangar bay

training. They have been assigned their temporary quarters and have been
given a brief tour of the entire facility's interior.
At the start of the sim:
Dorm One of Quad 15 and Dorm Two of Quad 27 are about to begin their walk
across Stickney Crater. All cadets are assembled in Airlock 5 in
environmental suits and carrying the tools necessary for their team's part of
the exercise.

Lecture Brief
0010.12.1
DrMasonMannix
Discipline: Engineering
Topic: Damage Control - Fire Suppression, part one
Fire suppression is a subject which is usually thrust in the back of the
average person's mind and is not one of the "glamour" subjects taught here at
the Academy. However, every Starfleet Officer must have a thorough
understanding of this subject and master the skills necessary to protect
Starship, Starbase,
Space Station, ground installations and the people who serve in them. No
officer knows when the time will come that he or she will need these skills
to save the lives of shipmates or civilians, but rest assured, that time will
come.
Fire Detection Sensors:
Fire detection sensors are incorporated into the design of every Starfleet
ship and facility. These sensors scan for changes in air temperature,
ionization, and can detect the presence of airborne particles or gases of
combustible byproducts. Let's take a closer look at a common type of fire
detection sensor currently employed in Starfleet ground installations
including the Academy itself.
VESDA Early Warning Fire Sensing System.
The VESDA air sampling fire sensing system detects the invisible byproducts
of materials as they degrade during the precombustion stages of an incipient
fire. And, by actively and continuously sampling air, the system operates
independently of air movements.
In operation, air samples are continuously drawn from the monitored
environment, typically through a multilayered sensing network with the aid of
a high efficiency aspirator. On the way to the fire detector the air samples
pass through a filter assembly to screen out large airborne dust particles.
Once inside the air sampling detector the samples are exposed to a
high-intensity and broad-spectrum light source. The incident light scattered
from
smoke particles in the air sample passes through a series of optical
components to a binaural light receiver. The light is converted to a binaural
signal and passed to the control system.
At the control module the signal is processed and presented on an analog
bar graph to visually indicate the level of smoke present in the monitored
area. Depending upon smoke levels and the preprogrammed alarm levels, the
appropriate output signals are generated. See the example below.
The first of the three staged alarm levels (ALERT) may simply indicate that
the system has detected something out of the ordinary that should be
investigated. The second level (ACTION) indicates that a potential fire
exists and that emergency procedures should begin. The third level (FIRE)
signifies an actual fire condition. Below is a very elementary "blowup"
diagram of the complete VESDA system.
