New Directions
Cmdre. Trinity da Vinci
Commodore Trinity da Vinci swiveled around in her chair, and, because nobody
was around to see her do it, put her feet up on her credenza, careful not to
knock anything off, and gazed contemplatively out the windows.
One thing she definitely liked about her office here at the Academy was the
view. She had a beautiful panorama across the Bay, taking in the city’s
shoreline, the ancient Golden Gate Bridge, and westward towards the Pacific.
The sunsets here were really quite wonderful, like now, and it was moments
like these that she wondered how she had come to spend almost half her life
on starships, where things like sunsets didn’t exist, except in
holodecks. When the opportunity to teach at the Academy for a few years had
come up, she had readily accepted.
Trinity had been back in San Francisco for about a week. She had a nice loft
apartment up on Telegraph Hill, with a 180-degree view out across the city.
After nearly 20 years aboard starships, she craved views of sky and water –
real views, not simulated – and here, she woke to sunlight streaming in her
windows, and slept a few hours after the last rays of sunset faded from her
walls. Her apartment was still largely unfurnished, because she had
become accustomed to the sparsity of ship-bound life.
She had received the transmission that morning that Commander Sorik would be
accepting the position of Dean of Internal Affairs. Trinity was looking
forward to seeing her former department head from the Stargazer. She had
spent a great deal of time with him during her assignments there, and felt
that he had been a kind of mentor for her. She had learned a great deal under
his tutelage.
It would probably be a bit odd at first now that the situation was reversed,
that she was now the higher ranking, but the sensation would likely be
entirely one-sided. Sorik would say that “discomfort suggests emotions, and
if you’ll recall, Trinity, that I am Vulcan, and we do not emote.” It would
also be nice, she thought, to have somebody who had known her so long and
would be comfortable around her, versus just seeing her for her pips.
~Seeing a friendly face is a nice side benefit, too,~ she thought, leaning
further back in her leather chair. Aside from familiar faces in the corridor
at the Academy or at HQ, she knew very few people in the city. The last time
that she had been here for any definite stay had been almost ten years ago,
in February 2356, when she had spent a month here in training and conferences
before transferring to her new XO post aboard the USS
Annapurna in March. But that time was another story in her life….
Putting her feet down, she swiveled back around and looked over the student
assignments that she would be responsible for. Part of her accepting the
assignment had included the contingency that she would get to teach and be
involved. If she wanted to sit in an office and do paperwork, she could have
stayed on the Miyoko. Students had already begun to arrive on campus,
although officially they were not due for a few more days yet.
Trinity looked forward to the challenge, and to the enjoyment of being
around so many young, optimistic minds again. This would be different that
anything thus far in her career, but it was a change she welcomed.

Pairings of Command, 1
JL Cmdre Trinity da Vinci & Cmdr Sorik
Commodore da Vinci looked over the report from Security for the day, and
shook her head. She would definately have to speak with Commander Sorik about
this cadet, once he arrived. She remembered her own Academy days and hid a
smile; her specialty had been finding ways to sneak off campus after curfew.
Freshmen cadets had a hard adjustment period their first year. Most of them
had to learn to live with roommates, which many had not had before; but more
than that, they had to learn to work with each other as team. Additionally,
they had to learn all the basic rules and regulations of Starfleet and how to
abide by them. That meant at the very least that they had to learn how to
handle and use new technology, and leave behind a lot of personal
things.
Starfleet Academy year one was about one thing : putting people in the
Starfleet mold, and getting them to understand what being an officer was all
about. It was sometimes a rough road, but they would all survive the "rigors"
of using only Starfleet regulation equipment!
She tucked the PADD to the side of her desk and wondered if she could get
over to the Quantum Café over near SFHQ for a pint later.
Sorik strode through the wide corridor of the administrative building,
appreciating the interesting use of architecture and decor to convey a sense
of power and stability, yet noting it somehow managed to avoid being too
overwhelmingly distracting. As a cadet, he had only visited this building a
few times. Now it would be his second home.
He returned his primary attention to his destination, which he observed
further down the hall. Continuing on at his gradual pace, he finally reached
the commodore's office.
Standing crisply before the yeoman seated at the desk before her doors, a
small sign designating the secretary as Yeoman Mark Vipin, he said,
"Commander Sorik reporting for duty."
The yeoman touched a his commbadge briefly. "Commander Sorik here, ma'am."
"Send him in."
The yeoman looked up at Sorik. "Go ahead in, sir."

Pairings of Command, 2
JL Cmdre Trinity da Vinci & Cmdr Sorik
Sorik stepped through as the door parted. His eyes found Trinity
immediately, but his face registered no expression at all. "Commodore," he
said.
Trinity's face initially remained impassive as she rose to her feet.
"Commander.... how nice to see you." Then she couldn't help herself, and a
broad smile lit up her face. "Sorik! I've been awaiting your arrival. Have a
seat. Can I get you anything? Vulcan mocha?"
"That sounds acceptable," he replied, taking a seat across from her.
Trinity retreived the drink from the replicator, remembering after all this
time exactly how he liked it, and handed it to him, and then plopped into her
seat and smiled at him. "How was your trip, Sorik? Wow, it really feels weird
to not be calling you Commander. You don't mind, do you?"
"I have no objections," Sorik stated. "But I fail to see why it would be
'weird'."
"You wouldn't, of course." Trinity sipped at her water, and then leaned
back in her chair. "My goodness, how long has it been? Nine years? Ten?"
Sorik took a sip from his mocha, noting it was, indeed, just as he preferred
it. He realized that Trinity had not lost her attentiveness to detail over
the years. "Nine, if I'm not mistaken."
Trinity grinned. "I was half-expecting you to say something like 'Nine
years, seven months, two weeks, one day and sixty-two minutes.'"
He raised an eyebrow. "Six months, three weeks, one day and forty-five
minutes, to be exact."
The Commodore simply smiled. "Glad to see you have not changed, Sorik. I
understand you also applied to VSA, as well."
"That is correct," he said, his tone never revealing his buried
disappointment. "As you are also aware, I am sure, that my application was
rejected."
She nodded slightly. "I had hoped you'd get it, but when you didn't, I
insisted on snatching you up. You were a wonderful instructor for me on the
Stargazer. VSA has no clue what they turned down." ~Pompous windbags,~ she
thought to herself, knowing how stuffy some of the VSAers could get. "Their
loss is our gain, Commander."
"I will aspire to fulfill all of my duties beyond your expectations,
Commodore," he stated.
She leaned forward, putting her elbows on her desk. "You know how high I
can aspire, Sorik."
"Indeed, Commodore," he replied.
"Cut out the Commodore stuff in private. We've known each other too long."
She grinned, and leaned back again. "Any questions about your duties, or
were the materials they sent to you clear enough?"
"The materials were adequate," he said. "It would appear that I have a
multifaceted purpose here at the Academy." He placed his mocha down on her
desk and steepled his fingers. "My role as Dean of Tactical Studies is
obvious, but my role as Dean of Internal Affairs is quite broad and vague.
Can you elaborate?"

Pairings of Command, 3
JL Cmdre Trinity da Vinci & Cmdr Sorik
"Well, between both positions, you are basically in charge of security around
campus, and investigating anything on campus, if need be. I have not heard
that there is much trouble on campus, but you never know." She paused, and
pulled out a PADD. "Did you hear about the program I've proposed to try out
this year?"
"I do not recall reading about it in material I received," he replied.
Her eyes gleamed. "I think that students could use a bit more
out-of-classroom time. I have proposed that we try this technique out on a
few of the quads. We have access to the USS Kilimanjaro for a few more
training cruises at an earlier date."
He raised an eyebrow, considering the possibilities. "I have always been in
favor of, as your described it, out-of-classroom training. I believe it will
help the cadets adapt to real life scenarios more quickly. It will also give
them a greater sense of responsibility. I have found that cadets tend to be
more careless when they are interacting in simulators and holodecks."
"Good, I'm glad we're in agreement. There were a few teachers who weren't
too hot on the idea, but I have the feeling that in order for the Academy to
move forward, we need to expose students to 'real life' situations sooner
than senior year. Who knows when some circumstance could require .... well,
you know what I'm saying."
"I do," he said with a slight nod.
"You know, speaking of job duties..." She reached over and picked up the
PADD she had been looking at earlier. "I think this falls under your
jurisdiction, Commander. And if you have any problems, let me know." She
smiled and handed over the report.
Sorik glanced over the PADD. "From my understanding, this situation does
indeed fall under my direct jurisdiction. It would seem a memo for both
campus security personnel and students would be in order, stating that no
personal vehicles are permitted on the campus grounds."
Trinity nodded. "No student is exempt from that, I don't care who their
parents are. If we make exceptions for one, we have to let everybody do it.
Same with personal weaponry... all freshmen are supposed to register and
leave all personal weaponry with Campus Security. I trust you implicitly,
Sorik, just as the Commodant trusts all of us to make sure the campus runs
smoothly. Care to join me for a while at the Quantum Café?"
He found her trust in him acceptable. "I am afraid I must refuse your
offer. I would like to begin introductions among the staff under my
supervision, as well as other various duties." He stood. "I will also make
resolving this cadet's aircar issue a priority."
She nodded. "I understand... although as it's the next-to-last day before
classes, there'll probably be a bunch of the staff there." She grinnned.
"But, I know you want to get settled in, as well." She stood, and put out
her hand. "It's great to see you again, Sorik, and I'm most pleased that you
accepted the position here."
He glanced at her hand for a moment, realizing the human custom would come
into play sooner or later. He shook her hand, and nodded. "I am pleased to
be serving with you, once again, Trinity."
She smiled, still not totally adjusted to the title. "I am sure I will see
you often, Sorik." She glanced at her chronometer. "And if I hurry, I can
just make the seven pm monorail to the city. Walk out with me?"
"Of course," he replied.
The two friends and co-workers headed out of the Commodore's office, and
parted ways at the front door. Trinity headed for the monorail station, and
Sorik headed towards the Security offices.

USF SFA MISSION BRIEFING
SD60003.01
"Where on the Campus is Commander Sorik?"
Attached, please find a zip file of a campus map. As I had to scan this in 4
parts, and I was working on a cheesy scanner at a cybercafé (::awaits her
SCSI card so she can get her good scanner hooked up::), please forgive that
it's four different shades of green. <g> Hope this helps identify things. The
little blobby blue circles are actually numbers identifying things like
lecture halls, etc; when I work on the graphic a bit more to put it on the
SFA website, I'll try to get those numbers cleared up a little.

STARFLEET ACADEMY
Duty Log StarDate 60002.16
'First Day'
Cadet Hatch Lars Teg
Science Trainee
Hatch walked into what would be his new quarters for quite a while. He
still could not get over the sterile look the pale white walls and gray tiled
floor gave the room. If humanoids were to live here, these would have to be
changed. With approval of Cadet Larindo
and the housing authority, a nice greenish floor rug and a some easy
removable wallpapering would do this place wonders. ~Who knows, it might
actually look 'nice'.~ Sitting down at the small desk in room three, Hatch
glanced over to the nice, decorative bucket that laid near the window.
Noting it was empty, he pulled out a large data padd and sat it on the desk
top. Hitting the audio record button, Hatch began to speak....
Begin recording Duty Log for Cadet Hatch Lars Teg....Star Fleet Academy
Science Trainee...Star Date 60002.16.
First Day in the Academy and I already can feel the nervous tension coming
from many a cadet. You can tell everybody knows the gravity of achieving
excellence here and the importance of 'making a good first impression' as the
humans say. We start what is commonly referred to as 'Hell Week' tonight. I
guess we get a few late night workouts by the upperclassbeing and the
faculty. From some history of
military academies of ancient Earth, this 'Hell Week' seem pretty tame in
comparisons. But we all know that history can be altered either way and so I
do approach tonight with some apprehension. I hope I do not offend any upper
classbeing tonight as I have heard that some can get very vindictive and
hamper someone's Academy life.
I settled into my triple bed sleeping room in the quad and met my only
roommate for the time being. Cadet Larindo appears to be one of an unknown
species commonly referred to as a changelings or shapeshifters. He seems to
be a nice being and I am sure we will get along without any major problems.
The fact that he regenerates in liquid form in a bucket and not a bed means
more room for us to use in other fashions. We will discuss the use of this
space, and the extra space normally given to a third roommate within the next
few days. After meeting a few more of our quadmates, (Note:more on them will
follow in the Personal Log) we went to the science hall and met some of the
staff.
Commodore Trinity, Commander Sorik, and Dr. Mannix each briefly spoke to the
assembled freshbeing class. The interpersonal dynamic of these three seemed
to jump out at the class and I heard some rumbling and 'gossip' about them
already. But from what I have read on their personal bios, they all seem a
little to professional to allow personality quarks to hamper their teaching
and leadership abilities; especially Sorik. I look forward to learning
from all of them.

Transitions (Part One)
by Commander Sorik
Stardate: 0002.08
Strumming the strings with the grace of a seasoned professional, the man
filled the room with the lute's harmonious melody. The music gently echoed
off the metal bulkheads and structures of the surrounding walls, the
acoustics of the room amplifying the sound to its optimum. The player leaned
his head back, allowing the harmony to penetrate his ears, his mind, as his
eyes scanned the countless stars cast along the dark,
unseen walls and ceiling.
It was then that he realized someone else was in the room with him.
Stopping suddenly, the man turned to see the silhouette of a woman standing
in the doorway. Her familiar bald head gleamed from the light of the
corridor behind her.
"Why, Sorik, that was beautiful," she said, clapping softly. "I could
almost swear you were putting some real passion into that song."
"Then I could assure you that you would be mistaken," Sorik replied, holding
the lute by his side. "Is there something I could assist you with,
Lieutenant?"
"Sorik," she huffed while wearing a friendly smile and placing her hands on
her hips. "We have served together on this ship for almost five years and
you still insist on calling me 'Lieutenant.' I told you along time ago to
call me Alea."
"To call you by your name would imply that we are something other than just
shipmates," Sorik pointed out, rather casually.
"We are more than shipmates, Sorik," she said, moving toward him. "Like it
or not, we're what you might call friends."
Sorik's brow furrowed somewhat. "Your constant flirtations, advances and
blatant disregard for my marriage hardly classifies us as friends,
Lieutenant," he said. "I have simply chosen to overlook your inappropriate
behavior because it is indicative of most other Deltans that I have known.
However, I would concur that a certain level of familiarity has developed
between us."
Alea placed her hands over her heart and beamed at him. "Why, Sorik!"
The Vulcan almost appeared to be annoyed at her sarcasm. "Again I ask, is
there something I can assist you with?"
"I've been looking all over for you," she informed him. "But I never
expected to find you here."
"As the assistant chief science officer aboard the Agethe, you know well
that I often come here to the Stellar Cartography lab to play during my
off-duty hours," he stated.
She shook her head. "I know that, silly. I mean, I never expected to find
you here today," she explained. "You're leaving the Agethe today and you're
spending your last hour aboard ship playing music in the dark."
"I fail to see your point," he admitted.
"You should be at your farewell party," Alea said.
"To my knowledge, there is no farewell party," he said.
"Well, that's because you didn't tell anyone but the captain that you were
leaving!" she exclaimed, poking him in the chest with her finger. "I had to
find out through a yeoman, of all people."
"I do not see how my transfer would constitute a party," Sorik said.
"It's more than a transfer," Alea told him. "You've been the Chief Security
and Tactical Officer aboard the Agethe for like 10 years, or something. This
is a big step, and there are people here who -- believe it or not -- are
gonna miss you."
Sorik glanced off for a moment, considering her words. Despite being an
acceptable science officer, Alea's presence was typically nothing short of
bothersome. He rarely paid attention to her, but for the first time,
surprisingly, she had actually found a way to strike a chord with him.
"But that's all well and done," Alea said, taking him by the arm and leading
him toward the corridor. "So tell me, how does it feel to know you'll be
teaching at the infamous Vulcan Science Academy?"
Sorik frowned. Somehow, the Deltan managed to strike yet another chord...

"But that's all well and done," Alea said, taking him by the arm and leading
him toward the corridor. "So tell me, how does it feel to know you'll be
teaching at the infamous Vulcan Science Academy?"
Sorik frowned. Somehow, the Deltan managed to strike yet another chord.
"First of all, Lieutenant, my transfer does not make me feel one way or the
other," Sorik stated quickly. "And to clarify, I will not be teaching at the
Vulcan Science Academy."
"What?" she asked as they stepped out into the corridor. "So you're not
leaving us?"
"I am indeed leaving the Agethe. However, my request for a professorship at
the Science Academy was rejected," he said bluntly.
"Why?"
"That is irrelevant," he stated. "The powers-that-be simply felt that I did
not have the qualifications necessary to teach at their institution."
"I'm sorry, Sorik," Alea said, tightening her grip on his arm.
"Your sorrow is not necessary," he said, but added, "though it is
appreciated."
She smiled. "So where are you going then?"
"I have been offered a position at Starfleet Academy," he explained. "A
former shipmate of mine is now the Dean of Studies there. She felt that my
skills and experience in Starfleet over the past 40 years would be beneficial
to the students. It would also allow me to gain the necessary teaching
experience to perhaps one day return to the Vulcan Science Academy."
"You'll be a wonderful teacher, Sorik," Alea said, leaning into him as they
walked. "The cadets will be lucky to have you."
Sorik paused and stepped back from the Deltan. "Since it is obvious I will
not be able to continue with my music, I will use this remaining time to
prepare for my departure."
"I'll gladly help you pack," Alea offered.
"That will not be necessary," Sorik responded. "I have already packed. I
was intending to give my regards to the captain."
"Ah, I see," she said, pouting somewhat. "Well, okay, then. It really has
been an honor serving with you, Sorik. You're nothing short of a hero around
here. We all look up to you."
"That makes sense, considering I am taller than the majority of the crew,"
he stated.
Alea gasped. "Sorik! Was that a joke?"
"Unlikely," he replied.
She stared at him, studying his features. Then she let out a sigh, to which
he responded with a raised eyebrow.
"I really am gonna miss you," she said.
"If it is any consolation, it will be rather difficult to forget you, as
well," he said. With that, he nodded and turned away from her.
As he disappeared around the corner, Alea caught one last glimpse of his
butt and committed it to memory. Grinning, she turned and headed off in the
other direction.

Re: Campus Security Blotter, Stardates 0002.11 to 0002.18
Stardate: 60002.11
Three incoming cadets filed reports with Campus Security that their personal
items were not transported into their assigned quads. An investigation of
the Academy transport logs showed the above mentioned items were misdirected
to the Zoology Department. The items were then located and returned to their
proper owners.
Stardate: 60002.15: Third-year cadet Jay Seco reported his PADD missing from
the Academy Library, 15th floor, at 1100 hours. At this time there are no
suspects, but due to the nature of the disappearance foul play is suspected.
Stardate: 60002.16: Doctor Mason Mannix filed in informal report about his
personal files being tampered with, and various course materials and
examinations had been stolen. Dr. Mannix refused access to his materials,
stating he would instead rewrite the materials he believed to have been
tampered with.
Stardate: 60002.18: Cadets T'Ner R'ger, Richard Potts and Jim Abasi were
detained at 2330 hours for disorderly conduct and for being in possession of
an alcoholic substance on campus grounds. Cadet Abasi was also cited for
urinating in public in the Retsitara Bushes outside the Presidio West Transit
Station. A cadet tribunal has been scheduled to review the charges.
Groundskeeper Boothby has requested to testify.

Re: Campus Security Blotter, Stardates 60002.19 to 60002.25
Stardate: 60002.19
Campus Security was called to a noise disturbance in Quad 3 at 0300 hours.
Responding officers discovered two Dasarian cadets engaged in the traditional
mating ritual of their homeworld. Apparently, Dasarian mating involves, in
the cadets' words, "a lot of shouting." The two cadets were issued a warning
to be more discreet and mindful of their neighbors in the future.
Stardate: 60002.22: Cadet Jay Seco reported finding his personal locker
tampered with at 1400 hours. No items of value were taken; however, the
cadet's personal diary and a pair of socks were missing. At this time there
are no suspects, but this is the second incident of theft reported by Cadet
Seco in two weeks.
Stardate: 60002.24: During a battle simulation between Quads 8 and 19 in
James T. Kirk Hall, engineering cadet B'Ka F'rado blew out three holoemitters
in Bridge Simulator Five and abruptly ended the program. Despite a small
explosion, no injuries or extensive damages were reported. Cadet F'rado
admitted to wrongfully tapping into the building's power generators to boost
power to the simulator's shields.
Stardate: 60002.25: Campus Security received an anonymous tip at 0900 hours
about an unauthorized student gathering (aka - a party) that was to take
place somewhere on campus that evening. A thorough search of the quads and
student activity centers revealed no evidence of such a party. The call may
have been a prank, or students also received a tip that security was coming.

'Sorik Hunting'
Cadet Hatch Lars Teg
Science Trainee
Quite an interesting 'Field Mission' as part of our real training in
addition to our classes in our various fields. This mission was to get all
first year cadets a little experience in what Security does from time to
time. Here we had Commander Sorik posing as a terrorist or saboteur who was
going to cause some serious damage to the
Academy unless we caught him in the allotted 40 minute time frame. We
started the mission in several small groups in the Jupiter Lecture hall.
Commander Sorik briefed us via a holographic projection of himself. After
the quick briefing, the teams were to begin the hunt.
I was paired up with Cadet NorthStar, the unusual person who could turn into
a Moose. We started out pretty slow as the rest of the teams darted out of
the hall towards possible locations of where Sorik might strike. We decided
to try and question Commodore Trinity on his location, using our tri-corders
to determine if she was telling the truth or not. All she did was tell us to
get out there and hunt Sorik down. After a few questions with little
change in our scans of her, we knew she would not reveal much so we scanned
the hall thoroughly. A few scans of the Hologram of Sorik I did while he was
giving us the details seemed.....Odd but we could not tell much at that time.
Meanwhile, sensor decoys and false reports of Sorik's location led the other
teams all around the campus.
NorthStar had the environmental controls vent out all the heavily scented
air in the hall. His moose nose picked up a trace of Sorik's scent so we
followed it out of the hall and noticed it led back into the hall. Riding on
the Moose-bot back to the hall (which was quite fun), both the holo-Sorik and
Commodore Trinity again told us to get out there and look for Sorik. But
something seemed odd about the Hologram. If he was continually
broadcasting the image, it would have moved around more and we would have
gotten better readings of its broadcast area. After a few moments of
scanning the Holo-Sorik, NorthStar decided to try something.
Taking a few steps back, the Moose NorthStar charged Holo-Sorik...and it
moved! Trying again, the Holo-Sorik moved again! Still feeling the traces
of a hologram around the area, NorthStar tried to grab the Hologram and it
pulled a phaser on us! After I threatened to bean him with my Tri-corder and
NorthStar transformed out some weapon-like appendages, he surrendered to us
just minutes before the time was up. He was using a Hologram displacement
unit that Star Fleet was doing its final tests on. Having Secured Sorik and
successfully completed the mission, NorthStar and I went to the pub and got a
few 'cold ones' to celebrate.

Duty Log: Cadet Zoltan Kukuk
SD 600003.01
After finding my teammate (Tormek as well as the just arrived B'Bahm) we
began to discuss strategy. Our first bright if futile idea was to use the
campus sensors to locate Sorik. After that I began to search some of the
places where I thought Sorik was least likely to be. Following his Vulcan
logic, it was only natural for us to search somewhere we associated with
Sorik. Therefore I searched the place he was least likely to be. The first
place
was Dr. Mannix's office. However I soon found out that Dr. Mannix harbored
no errant Vulcans. I then decided that perhaps Sorik had pulled a reverse
reverse logic and had gone back to his quarters. When I got there I felt a
flash of victory as Sorik raced out the door but was disappointed when it
turned out to be a hologram. That done, I remembered what the original
mission orders were. Supposedly Sorik had to beat us by doing damage. Tormek
and
I theorized that if we damaged everything there was, Sorik could not
accomplish his mission. We headed for the power plant to turn off the power
and then turned off the main computer backups. However it was then that the
recall order was given. We were shocked to find out that Sorik had hardly
moved from the start point at all. Well, there is always next semseter.

Personal Log: Cadet Zoltan Kukuk
SD 600003.01
Zoltan bent his head over the piece of equipment he was working on.
Assorted components of sensors and electronics he had pilfered lay on a sheet
over a longue table. The memory of the last training mission burned inside
him. Zoltan could not tell whether it was shame or a wounded pride. He had
been taught to never repeat the same mistake again when he was a child.
Therefore, he had to make sure that Sorik's device could be nuetralized. He
had
been able to get a description of what it did from the commander but it was
far more trouble to pierce the cloaks the device created. He sighed as his
latest tests came up and showed that not every cloak had been nuetralized.
Indeed he was only able to defeat the thermo sensors. "And even that is
easily masked by conventional means" he grumbled.
He sat for a while longer, glaring at other Cadets that dared disturb him.
After an hour he had made known to everyone in the door that he wanted to be
left alone. "Geez," he thought as his brain began to numb, "This thing is
like a bright light. It blinds every sensor I try to put on it." But as the
metaphor tumbled in his head, he began to realize how accurate it was.
"That's it!" was the first in a swift series of thoughts, "If this thing is
so powerful, I can probably trace the distortions it creates! There's
nothing it can do about it's own emissions. A passive sensor would pick it
right up but an active one would just fail." With that thought he ran off to
grab some new pieces, confident in his triumph over the Commander.

is any consulation but I have hear from all the other cadet's in the
freashmen year had lostt hat shuttle i was the first to bring it back well i
only brought it back in theoy the simulation ended before the shuttle actully
returned base.
The simulation was intence i got to practice my piloting skills with extream
force. The worst part was my shuttle may B'Bahm his actions in beaming to the
cliff to recover the equipment was drastic. Something i would not have
authorized had i been able to stop him before he did it. Once he had beamed
tot he cliff side i knew that my mission had changed drimaticly I now had to
rescue B'Bahm from his own actions. That is the Klingon in him that did
it. His Vulcan half was in enough control to grab the emergancy pattern
enhancers so that i could then get a lock on him and the equipment.
The other Shuttels were determained to help us escape the atmoshphere and as
greatful as i am about that there was nothing i could do to assist them in
their efforts.

'Should We Stay Ore Should We Go?'
Cadet Hatch Lars Teg
Science Trainee
Quite an interesting training mission we just had. It was for the general
education class STAR101 "Starfleet Skills I"; which is required for all
cadets to take. This was a three group retrieval mission that put all cadets
from Quads 15 and 27 in various teams and different mission objectives. The
premise
was a Starfleet science researcher was trapped on a not so hospitable planet.
Transporters were unable to get a lock on him or any of his equipment due to
atmospheric turbulence and some nasty hurricanes moving in. Three shuttles
were sent; one to pick up the researcher, another to get the ore sample he
was collecting, and another was to retrieve the equipment he was using.
Upon entering the simulators, we proceeded to our assignment. I was with
Cadets Kukuk and Ataris and we were to retrieve the ore and soil samples the
researcher had taken. Shuttle one was to get the researcher and shuttle
three was assigned the equipment. Ataris worked most efficiently on
adjusting the sensors and transporters to work in the nasty planetary
conditions. As we neared the planet, I asked our pilot Kukuk to hail the
other shuttles
to coordinate sensor and communications data from the researcher. Both
shuttles failed to respond to repeated hails. So we descended into the
planets nasty atmosphere and attempted to complete our mission alone.
When we detected that shuttle one had found the researcher, we again hailed
them to see if they could ask the researcher where he lost the samples. Not
getting a reply, we directly contacted the researcher and he relayed to us he
though he dropped it into a slow moving river near the hills he was taking
shelter in. As shuttle one beamed in the injured researcher, we scanned the
river and found the sample container. It was floating towards a large
waterfall and we were unable to get a lock on it.
The team decided to quickly replicate a large net and hold it out in front
of the shuttle to catch the falling sample. Using the tractor beam to hold
the net in place, we snagged the falling sample and beamed it aboard. After
beaming back in the net, we hailed the base to report we had completed our
mission objective. The base then warned us of some nasty weather coming in
and that we should leave as soon as possible. Noting that shuttle three
was having trouble getting a lock on all the equipment, we asked the base if
we could assist. After receiving permission to do so as long as we did not
jeopardize ourselves too much, we proceeded to where shuttle three was.
Again, repeated hails were unanswered or slow to respond. I contribute some
of that to the conditions of the planet. But we learned from them that one
of the cadets modified the transporters' receptor array to focus on him (or
something like that) and he physically beamed down and collected the
equipment. By that time the storm was really bad and their shuttle was
taking a beating. As they beamed on Cadet T'Vigo and the equipment, they
took a
direct lightning shot and began losing power. Our repeated hails for them to
link their transporter sensor data stream to ours so we could beam them and
the equipment over were not replied to. Contacting the base again for
suggestions, we tried to help the shuttle into orbit with our tractor beam so
we could then tow them back to the base. Unfortunately, the simulator time
ended just before we reached orbit.
Fearing we had failed, I was a little upset for our overall performance.
Returning to the lecture room for a debriefing, I quietly went through my
mind as to things we could have done differently. After I blurted out to the
Commodore that I thought we failed, she corrected my speaking etiquette and
said the computer extrapolated both shuttles would have made it out. I was
glad she pointed out that our shuttle followed proper procedure in keeping
the base informed of our actions and asking for permission before doing
things beyond the mission perimeters. Shuttle one also made it back to base
with the injured researcher with plenty of time to spare. I shall evaluate
my performance, my shuttle teams performance, and the performance of all
involved later when I have the time. It is critical we learn early want to
do in such situations as beings lives could and will be at stake when we
become
Starfleet officers.

Game
We last week I engaged in an exercise that to my understanding was to test
our skills in the field. Apparently I was mistaken in this after considering
all information on the exercise I have determined that either I had reported
to a Game of some sort by mistake or accidentally ended up in a Security
officer exercise which undoubtedly was a waste of my time being an Engineer.
I had drew the conclusion that each person would be tested in there skills
Engineers, Medical and, etc., etc. Apparently I was wrong so I must conclude
that I attended the wrong meeting knowing that Commander Sorik being a Vulcan
would not overlook such important aspects. This is a poor mark for Starfleet
Academy I would think the most important military installation in the
Federation would be more organized. Maybe my father`s logic was right...

We had our first test today on the simulators. I believed it turned out to be
an enlightening experience, I was able to perform only half as good as I
should of been able to with my hard studying and Vulcan Navy experience. I
did prove to be inefficient in my actions. First, when the enemy vessel
pulled off the Picard maneuver I extended the shields in order to deflect the
close fire, my failure was to not to keep up with the ship after the move,
when it strafed our deflector dish. At the same time we fired a vertron pulse
that was no problem to arrange due to the fact Vulcan ships use the tactic
often. I did fail however to modulate it to a frequency that would be most
disrupting to the enemies shields. This was my fault because I was not well
enough versed in the capabilities of an Excelsior Class starship. Also I have
determined earlier in the engagement that I could have dealt with the
ships deflectors better to deflect the photon torps that hit us head on. I
rate my personal performance to about 50% this is unacceptable and I am
willing to receive any and all punishment for the low performance I
presented.

After a workout in the Academy Gymnasium today I returned to my quarters, to
find I had a message on subspace. I looked over who the message was from and
it was from Master Saton, I was surprised that such a respected master would
take the time to contact me from his duties. I began to read the letter quite
carefully since it was from such a respected Vulcan. Most of the paragraphs
contained skills or Philosophy for my training but I came to one I
found quite interesting. It said in simple terms that it is good to socialize
with people of other races because someday they may be in a position to help
or save your life. I found this quite fascinating and began to look for the
logic behind socializing and it became evident that is was logical. Since I
have determined this a reasonable action thanks to the help of Master Saton I
must now find a way to simply "do it"

Computer, begin log. Not much coming my way, just....hangin' around. I'm
quite optimistic about my section of the module, hoping that all goes well
and no sparks fly. I've managed to repair the damage to my section with all
the necessary tools at my disposal, but all this 20th century technology is
so unpredictable, so there's no telling what will happen. Its pleasing to
know that technology has advanced surpassingly in the last 300 years.
I've been running a systems check over my section of the module every so
often to check for any minor quirks and to keep me busy while the others
continue working. I found the task not too complex but not to simplified
either, considering the fact that the technology is outdated by about 300
years. I'm still adapting to the zero-g environment as well as the new
working environment but I am progressing rather well. To say the least, I'm
glad I
didn't have to borrow my lunch or the smell would never let me get any work
done. Duras out.
Tapping his comm badge to stop recording, Duras looked around the outdated
space station and sighed. He closed his eyes to momentarily enjoy the
sensation of being weightless and take a quick breather. Duras soon found
his way back to world of reality and opened his eyes. He saw the others in
his squad still hard at work as if nothing had changed. Removing his
tricorder from the holster in his space suit, he began scanning his section
of the
logistics module once again and just like the last 13 times, everything
appeared in working condition.

Today, myself and the team was assigned to escort Ambassador Vu'Tahr, of the
Klingon Empire, around the campus in preparation for a dinner of guests.
Taking his targ with him, I got the impression the Ambassador had had a bit
too much bloodwine, and he readily sampled and rejected several of the
spirits available for the diplomats.
He asked to see the weapons training facilities, and we began to escort him
there, though the fact that he was intoxicated became more and more apparent
as we walked on. Mr. Remy and Mr. Teg could not handle the Klingon together,
should he decide to get violent, but I felt confident I myself could. Even if
he did sic his targ on me.
That never came to be, however. The Antedan Ambassador, on a feeding frenzy,
as I understand, came tearing buy, scooped up the targ and began devouring it
live. I went into beast mode and in pursuit of the Ambassador, finally
stopping him. I had to restrain the Klingon Ambassador from killing the
Antedan Ambassador, as the targ was escorted to sickbay.
Commodore Da Vinci solved the dispute, though I did have to hold them off
for a few minutes on my own. I did do it without using my armguns, however.
When that Klingon kept yelling around though, I was tempted.

STARFLEET ACADEMY
MISSION BRIEFING
Wednesdays, PR USF SFA, 10pm EST/9pm CST/8pm RMT/7pm PST
APRIL 12, 2000
"The Few, The Proud ... the Starfleet Cadets"
SURV 101 "Basic Wilderness Survival"
All cadets, in conjunction with Starfleet Skills 101, are required to take
SURV 101, which covers basic wilderness survival skills, and is a
prerequisite for all future survival courses. After two weeks of intense
physical conditioning and four weeks of lessons in the classroom, including
holodeck simulations for "hands on" knowledge, as well as further physical
training, students will engage in their first actual field mission
Teams will be beamed into an undisclosed location in the Sierra Nevada
mountains and will be required to make their way to a "staging area", which
is a safety zone. Each team will be given enough information to know how far
away the staging area is, and they will need to find their way to the staging
area. The staging area is a minimum of four days' journey (96 hours) by foot
from your beam-in site.
The maximum amount of time allotted for this exercise is one week. Any
surving cadets still left in the course at the end of one week will be beamed
to the staging area.
Average course time to staging area: 5 days, 14 hours.
Course record: 68 hours, 27 minutes.
Each team will have ONLY the following equipment for each group: 1 cord saw,
1 knife, 1 small bucket, a flint and steel, 1 small shovel, and 1 sheet of
plastic. There are no man-made structures anywhere within the survival range,
so you will not find any other manmade items anywhere within the range until
you reach the staging area. Cadets are
dressed in their standard all-purpose cadet uniform and all-terrain boots.
Your teams will NOT have commbadges, tricorders, or any other form of
technology available to you. Each cadet has been injected with emergency
transponders to track their movements. Additional tracking is hidden
throughout the survival range, so all cadets will be in visual range of the
monitoring group in the staging area at all times.
Please note this sim premise will cover two sims. Trinity is on vacation next
week, but Sorik will continue the sim next week. :) Any cadets "killed"
(removed) in the first day of the mission or who were not here this week will
be sent out next week as a new team.
STAGING AREA - Red for Commander Nimembeh (played by Trinity) and Commander
Sorik
Commander Nimembeh is infamous around campus for his Survival courses. How
lucky for all of you that you all drew him as your instructor. :) Nimembeh
and Sorik will monitor your progress. Any team members seriously or "fatally"
wounded will be removed via beamout from your group for necessary treatment.
Starting teams will be based upon attendance at this week's sim.
Team 1 - Blue and use @
Team 2 - Black; no symbol @
Pre-excused absences for this week: Remy; Larindo. Poor guys are both
suffering technological meltdowns. :)
Please note that for clarity's sake and less confusion while simming, please
do not use bold typefaces or bright colors unless designated to do so, or you
are in a command situation. However feel free to use whatever font
you want. ;) Thank you!

A simple survival course, right?
Wrong.
Oh so wrong.
We started out in groups of 5, dropped in a bunch of mountains, and ordered
to find the safety zone, the only nearby man made structure. With only the
most meager supplies, we were set on our way. No food, water, shelter,
tricorders, holovids, communicators, nothing.
Except, of course, ourselves.
We began to make our way, and I went into beast mode, offering to carry the
supplies on my back for a time. We made our way around the mountains, heading
in the general direction of where we believed the safety zone today. We
encountered some berries, and picked many, as I sampled them to make sure
they were fine to eat. They were of course, and we went through them quickly,
perhaps too quickly.
We lost Alysia, for no apparent reason she was beamed out. Perhaps she had a
sudden heart attack, I don't know. Soon after, we encountered a stream and a
small pack of coyotes. Quite hungry by this point, Kukuk and Duras went off
to hunt them, while I took a brief bath in the stream, catching some fish for
consumption while Eryn had a little break.
Transformers have to eat too.

VIEW FROM NIMEMBEH'S EYES
CMDR. NIMEMBEH, SURVIVAL COURSE STAGING AREA
COMMANDER NIMEMBEH LOOKED AT THE MONITORS with great satisfaction. There were
two teams out on the course, three if you included the new team of Mannix and
Sorik. They were all moving strongly, but it was still early afternoon. There
was still plenty of tough terrain ahead, provided they stayed on the correct
heading.
Those who had been beamed out within the first hour of the course were being
gathered together, and with the addition of those cadets late to arrive,
would be beamed back out onto the course to the last remaining compass point,
northwest of the staging area. They’d be about three or four hours behind the
other teams, but this wasn’t a competition between teams. This was merely a
challenge to survive. Even the fittest of the candidates, if they
did not properly hydrate and nourish themselves, as well as protect
themselves against the elements, could suffer badly after several days in the
wilderness.
He shook his head slightly as he looked at the initial readings from the
course. Perhaps he simply had spent too much time in the Marines, and was
trained to think certain ways, but on the other hand, all too often the
cadets forgot the most obvious things. At least 90% of the teams, on average,
forgot to scout the land before moving anywhere – thus losing a person within
the first hour of beam-in. Oh sure, most appointed a point person, but what
good would that do if you walked right into a trap?
The problem with the Academy, Nimembeh felt, was that it made people soft.
Careless. And although they all sat through the survival classes nodding
their heads and taking notes and doing the proper hands-on labs, it wasn’t
until their first trial run in the wilderness that they really got an idea
what they might be in for if they ever were stranded. Hell, these students
had it luxurious! They had a cord saw, a knife, a small
bucket, flint and steel, a shovel and a sheet of plastic. They wouldn’t be
guaranteed even that much luxury if they really found themselves stranded
somewhere.
You told them they were in hostile territory and they had to make their way
to the safety of the staging zone, but most of them presumed “hostile” simply
meant “no technology.” Of course, the cadets never quite saw it that way. In
his many years of teaching at the Academy, he’d seen it all (or at least,
thought he had).
The team that held the course record, for example. They had been a SOG
candidate cadets who were in advanced level IV survival course, which meant
they were beamed into place with their clothes, and nothing else. They had
run the course in late March, when late-season storms and the initial thaws
had swollen many of the smaller streams into rapids. Diehard bunch that they
were, they’d managed to pull together enough dead wood and materials, and,
lashing the parts together with dried grasses, had created a rough craft
barely big enough to hold all six members of their crew. They’d boarded their
barely-float-worthy craft and ridden it halfway through the course before it
had disintegrated on its way through some particularly harsh rapids. The
half-drowned crew had picked themselves up out of the swollen river, given
themselves less than two hours to rest and eat a lucious meal of grubs and
roots, before picking themselves and hauling double-time through the woods
with enough stealth that they actually managed to startle a small cluster of
deer.
He’d seen teams that had not survived even the first five hours. One
spectacularly inept team had lost one team member immediately due to not
scouting the area; the rest were lost as a group when their leader took them
across a windswept, late season snow pack without testing it first, and it
had, literally, crumbled under their feet into an avalanche. If it wasn’t for
the emergency transponders, would probably have been truly dead and not
just “fake” dead.
Despite his hard-as-steel exterior, Nimembeh had a soft spot for the cadets.
He wanted to make sure they all had the skills necessary to survive anything
that hit them. He drilled them mercilessly because he cared, not because he
particularly enjoyed his reputation as a hard-ass. (Not that the reputation
hurt, either).
He fetched some field rations and settled down at the monitors to watch the
teams work their way towards evening.

"Fun with Rocks""
PSCI 102 "Principles of Geology"
As previously indicated in the Academy Curriculum that was sent out to all
students at the beginning of the semester, cadets must fulfill thirteen
educational requirements in addition to classes required for their majors.
Of these basic requirements, cadets must fulfill Planetary Survival within
the first two years.
In conjunction with the recent introductory survival training curriculum of
the freshman class, first-year cadets must familiarize themselves with the
variety of planetary environments they may encounter during their Starfleet
career. Thus, the freshman classes have been scheduled to attend the
Planetary Sciences Department's seminar on the Principles of Geology.
The seminar, which will be held Wednesday evening in Lecture Room Alpha in
Hawkins Hall, will feature three guest lecturers--Doctors Phillip Marseau and
Viisiimiian Amara, both geologists with the Federation Science Council, and
Lieutenant Commander Aido Rixx, Chief of Sciences aboard the USS Hermes.
The lecturers will cover planetary structures, minerals, landforms and the
processes that form them (volcanism, landquakes, glaciation). Other topics
discussed will be geological history; interpretation of past geological
events, emphasizing the formation of M-Class environments and the evolution
of life.
All first-year cadets are required to attend.
...and, um, for goodness sake, remember to always expect the unexpected. :)

"Jeepers, It's the Creepers" - part 1
A rash of odd items have been happening on campus as of late. There has been
an increase in the number of missing items across campus. The odd thing is
that none of the items seem to have any kind of relation to one another. The
increase has been very gradual; value of items range from worthless to
priceless sentimental items. There have been no obvious rifling of items or
ransacking of rooms. Many people reporting missing items have chalked the
loss
up to their own absentmindedness, but the increase in reports without any
clear reason or any obvious trail of clues has the Security department at a
loss. (Even Mannix has shut up, because he is missing one of his treasured
award medallians, and doesn't want to piss off Security for fear of not
getting it back ;).
A few of the more observant people on campus have noticed things like
personal items moved slightly off from where they should be, but the
phenomenom is usually shrugged off and attributed to roommates, friends or
their own forgetfulness.
On the bright side... spring is settling in on campus. It's been breezy and
beautiful around the Bay. It's the day after first term semi-finals have
completed. A few straggling students are still passing in their midterm
papers. ;) It seems like a perfect spring day.....

"Jeepers, It's the Creepers" - part 2
Background reading: Please be sure to have read Cdr Sorik's log, "Be Very,
Very Quiet".
Recap from last week: A rash of odd items have been happening on campus as of
late. There has been an increase in the number of missing items across
campus. The odd thing is that none of the items seem to have any kind of
relation to one another. The increase has been very gradual; value of items

phenomenom is usually shrugged off and attributed to roommates, friends or
their own forgetfulness.
New information: Classes for the next half of the term are due to begin in
two days. The problem can no longer be ignored; it must be solved before
classes begin again. To this end, students will be sent out in groups to see
if they can discover the source of the problems, or the theif's cache.

Now, Where Did I Put That ... ?
Cmdre Trinity da Vinci and Commander Sorik
TRINITY LOOKED AT THE FAINT TRACES IN THE DUST on her bookshelves, knowing
that things had been touched... moved.... examined, put back in the attempt
to place them exactly where they'd been.
Things were starting to come together. Things moved or missing, all across
campus, the rate increasing slowly over the past few weeks. Clearly, there
were forces at work here, unseen forces. Campus security had yet to detect
intruders, and yet the events continued.
The popular theory among the student body was that ghosts were beginning to
haunt campus -- ghosts of old San Francisco, early settlers whose gravestones
still stood in the historic cemetary on campus, or even ghosts of those
Native Americans who had some before.
Sorik paged Trinity, and she went down to check out Security's newest traps
and listen to his theories. They moved into his office, hoping that they had
the moment to themselves, and sat.
"What do you think, Commodore?" Sorik asked gravely.
Trinity resisted the urge to kick her heels up on the desk. She had no idea
why the position always seemed to make her think "better"; it was probably
just a bad habit. She smiled. "Aliens?" She looked up at him for a
reaction.
"I believe there is enough evidence to suggest that, Commodore," he
explained. "The ability to move about a secure Starfleet facility undetected,
the interest in items of no value other than that of personal significance to
a particular person or species, the looting of the archives... It leads me to
suspect an outside presence...someone or someones not already familiar with
the cultures present here...someone interested in studying our reactions,
our habits, our motives, our beliefs... But perhaps the most troubling
aspect, is that they seem to possess advanced technology and are able to use
it to manipulate our security procedures."
She nodded. "That's what I was thinking. How could we possibly detect
them?"
"I am currently working on a plan to do just that," he told her. "As you
know, as Dean of Tactical Studies I am privy to new technology being
developed in Starfleet R&D facilities here on Earth.. With your consent, I
can gain access to a new detection sensor that can be adjusted to scan in the
necessary
parameters unique to our situation.... All spectral
bandwidths...Bio-signature emissions...tachyon particles...Motion
detection...The combination of these scans should reveal some trace of our
guests."
Trinity nodded. "Make it so...." She mused a thought for a moment.
"Perhaps while you and a team work on that, we can get a team together and
see if we can find where all the missing items have disappeared to."
"An excellent idea, Commodore," he said. "It may also serve as the
distraction my team needs to employ this operation properly without detection
or raising suspicion."
She nodded. "We'll get on it, then. Turn it into a lesson for some class,
of course." She grinned.
"Of course," Sorik replied with a nod.

"Flight Time"
STAR101 "Starfleet Skills I," retrieval mission 1
As another exercise in general "Starfleet Skills I," students will report to
James T. Kirk Hall to engage in a simulated recovery operation. As advanced
as transporter technology has become, there will be circumstances and times
when retrieving personnel and equipment will have to be done the "hard way"
-- by shuttlecraft.
SUMMARY: In this exercise, cadets will be asked to recover a stranded science
researcher, a rare, geological sample (rare ore) and one piece of Starfleet
survey equipment from a small moon. The moon is experiencing mild
atmospheric conditions (planetwide hurricanes) which are disrupting
long-range transporter operations, so the cadets must utilize Type-6
shuttlecraft to reach their objective. However, the last known coordinates
of the researcher
was on rocky terrain, making a landing impossible. To further hinder
matters, the researcher's equipment and ore sample have been displaced due to
the storms moving through the area.
OBJECTIVE: Each team will be dispatched to recover one of the items. Each
team must reconfigure their shuttle's sensors to navigate the atmospheric
conditions and pinpoint their objective. Upon doing so, the shuttles must be
moved into a low orbit for effective transport.
Each shuttle team must then manipulate the transporter settings to safely
beam aboard their object from the planetoid's surface and safely return it to
base.
NOTE: The science researcher reported having injuries, so the appropriate
shuttle team must make the necessary preparations for that.
Also, scans predict the atmospheric disturbances will be steadily increasing
making it imperative to retrieve the specified objectives as quickly and as
accurately as possible.
TEAM ONE: Please use the color green (or a shade thereof), and "1."
OBJECTIVE: Retrieval of the science researcher
Alysia Atredes -- helm officer (navigate storm to proper coordinates)
North Star -- operations officer (use sensors to locate and transport
science researcher)
Tormek -- engineering officer (concentrate on boosting sensors, transporters
and shield strength)
Eryn Chase -- medical officer (medical treatment of the researcher)
TEAM TWO: Please use the color purple (or a shade thereof), and "2."
OBJECTIVE: Retrieval of the geological soil sample
Zoltan Kukuk -- helm officer (navigate storm to proper coordinates)
Remy -- operations officer (use sensors to locate and transport geological
soil sample)
Hatch Lars Teg -- science officer (assist ops officer in locating sample,
take necessary precautions to tranport and store it safely aboard
shuttlecraft)
Ataris -- engineering officer (concentrate on boosting sensors, transporters
and shield strength)
TEAM THREE: Please use the color black, and "3."
OBJECTIVE: Retrieval of the surveying equipment
Christopher Michael Blair -- helm officer (navigate storm to proper
coordinates)
B'Bahm T'Vigo -- operations officer (use sensors to locate and transport
science survey equipment)
Larindo -- engineering officer (concentrate on boosting sensors,
transporters and shield strength)

STAR101 "Starfleet Skills I," space walking lesson 1
A vital skill for all Starfleet personnel is space walking. For some, this is
very disorientating, and others take right to it. In any case, it is a vital
skill that must be mastered before you will be permitted to work on
low-gravity terrestrial bodies or in space.
We will be working in Holosuite 1 on level 3 of Kirk Hall. We will begin the
session with a discussion of how the spacesuits work and basic safety, and
then we will suit up, and walk out onto a holographic recreation of the
ancient Earth spacecraft, the International Space Station. We will exit from
the airlock below the Logistics Modules.

"Obstacles"
STAR101 "Starfleet Skills I," Basic Obstacle Course
Starfleet cadets must undergo a series of physical and survival training
exercises in order to prepare them for the various physical and psychological
demands that certain situations will demand during their Starfleet careers.
Although STAR 104, "Planetary Survival," provides the requirements for
surviving in various planetary environments, the "Starfleet Skills" Basic
Obstacle Course introduces cadets to the first of many basic exercises that
present a variety of obstacles and challenges that must be overcome in order
to advance.
SUMMARY:
Students from various quads have beamed to the Academy Physical Training
Facility outside of Paris, France to run Obstacle Course One. There they are
briefed on the course and its requirements, as well as other details
necessary for completion of the course.
Obstacle Course One encompassing several kilometers of wilderness. Some
highlighted obstacles include the Valley, the Swamp, the Maze and the
Riddler. The course has two starting points, Alpha and Beta, each leading to
a final destination known as the "Sanctuary." Two teams will run the course
simultaneously, each beginnning from a seperate starting point.
The obstacle course is NOT a race against teams but a race against an
increasing level of difficulty as cadets proceed further into the course.
Cadets will be attired in standard-issue PT uniforms, and each team will be
supplied with only one phaser and one tricorder each.
OBJECTIVES:
Each team must designate a team leader to coordinate the other team members.
Each team must reach the Sanctuary within the alotted time (40 minutes).
NOTE: Each team must enter the Sanctuary as a team; any team that leaves a
teammate behind will not have successfully completed the course.
TEAM ONE: Quad 15, Dorm 1; use blue and the number "1"
Cadets will begin the course from Starting Point Alpha. Please use any
shade of blue and the number 1.
TEAM TWO: Quad 27, Dorm 2
Cadets will begin the course from Starting Point Beta. Please use black and
the number 2.

"We're Having a Party..."
STAR101 "Starfleet Skills I," Diplomacy and small talk skills ;)
The Academy is hosting a diplomatic affair for representatives from a variety
of races that are either new to the Federation, allied races, or under
consideration for admittance into the UFP. There will be a diplomatic
dinner/dancing event with seating beginning at 2245 hours in the Botellin
Center for the Arts, which is the C-shaped building directly south of the
Presidio West monorail transit station. (see attached map if you have not
already DLed
it previously).
To enhance interspecies relations and to also brush up cadets' diplomatic
skills, teams of cadets have been assigned to various VIPs to show them
around campus.
Please note: teams, you are responsible for playing the NPC VIPs assigned to
your teams. It is your choice what the NPC VIP will be interested in seeing,
and whether they actually manage to see it or not. ;) This is a
character-building sim.
Please also note that I may be late, as I have to go down to someplace on the
Indiana border after work and will probably be cutting it pretty darn close
to sim time on my return. Sorik will get the sim started on time, and, if for
whatever reason I am not back in time, handle promotions and awards at the
end of the sim. :)

"The Few, The Proud ... the Starfleet Cadets" - Part II
SURV 101 "Basic Wilderness Survival" (Continued)
Background: All cadets, in conjunction with Starfleet Skills 101, are
required to take SURV 101, which covers basic wilderness survival skills, and
is a prerequisite for all future survival courses. After two weeks of intense
physical conditioning and four weeks of lessons in the classroom, including
holodeck simulations for "hands on" knowledge, as well as further physical
training, students have engaged in their first actual field mission.
Last Sim: One week ago, two Academy teams were beamed into an undisclosed
location in the Sierra Nevada mountains and were required to make their way
to a "staging area", which is a safety zone. Each team had been given enough
information to know how far away the staging area is. The staging area is a
minimum of four days' journey (96 hours) by foot from the beam-in site, but
so far no cadets have made it to the staging area by foot.
Also, Commander Sorik and Professor Mannix had been beamed from the staging
area into the wilderness by Nimembeh, and they are currently attempting to
make their way back.
Note: The maximum amount of time allotted for this exercise is one week, so
time is running out for the teams. Any surving cadets still left in the
course at the end of one week will be beamed to the staging area.
Each team has ONLY the following equipment for each group: 1 cord saw, 1
knife, 1 small bucket, a flint and steel, 1 small shovel, and 1 sheet of
plastic. There are no man-made structures anywhere within the survival range,
so you will not find any other manmade items anywhere within the range until
you reach the staging area. Cadets are
dressed in their standard all-purpose cadet uniform and all-terrain boots.
Your teams do NOT have commbadges, tricorders, or any other form of
technology available to you. Each cadet has been injected with emergency
transponders to track their movements. Additional tracking is hidden
throughout the survival range, so all cadets will be in visual range of the
monitoring group in the staging area at all times.
STAGING AREA - Red for Commander Nimembeh (played this week by Commander
Sorik as needed)
Commander Nimembeh is infamous around campus for his Survival courses. How
lucky for all of you that you all drew him as your instructor. :) Nimembeh
is monitoring the cadets' progress, and any team members seriously or
"fatally" wounded will be removed via beamout from your group for necessary
treatment.
The two cadet teams (and the old fogey team of Sorik and Mannix) currently
engaged in this exercise will remain as they were at the end of last week's
sim (with the exeption of Tormek and Atredes, who were beamed into the
staging area by Nimembeh)
Team 1 - Blue and use 1
Team 2 - Black and use 2
Old Fogey Team - Maroon and use 3
Pre-excused: Cadets Larindo, Tormek and Atredes
